Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with abnormalities in functional connectivity of a specific cortico-limbic network; however, less is known about white matter abnormalities providing structural connections for this network. This study investigated whether the diagnosis and symptoms of PTSD are associated with alterations in fractional anisotropy (FA), an index reflecting white matter organization, across six, a priori-defined tracts. White matter FA was quantified by diffusion tensor imaging using 3 T-MRI among 57 male, combat-exposed veterans with no history of moderate to s

In this paper, we propose an automated white matter connectivity analysis method for machine learning classification and characterization of white matter abnormality via identification of discriminative fiber tracts. The proposed method uses diffusion MRI tractography and a data-driven approach to find fiber clusters corresponding to subdivisions of the white matter anatomy. Features extracted from each fiber cluster describe its diffusion properties and are used for machine learning. The method is demonstrated by application to a pediatric neuroimaging dataset from 149 individuals, including

Although there are several techniques to analyze diffusion-weighted imaging, any technique must be sufficiently sensitive to detect clinical abnormalities. This is especially critical in disorders like mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), where pathology is likely to be subtle. mTBI represents a major public health concern, especially for youth under 15 years of age. However, the developmental period from birth to 18 years is also a time of tremendous brain changes. Therefore, it is important to establish the degree of age- and sex-related differences. Participants were children aged 8-15 years

Vulnerability to fraud and financial exploitation among older adults is an increasing public health concern. Growing evidence supports that cognitive and socioemotional changes with age contribute to greater exploitation risk among older adults, while the neural mechanisms of heightened susceptibility to deception in aging are not well understood. Of note, white matter tracts are particularly impacted in aging and are likely implicated in deception detection. This study, for the first time, examined the extent to which age-related differences in white matter pathways subserving social cognitio

BACKGROUND: Insular surgery remains technically demanding because of the region's deep location and intimate relationships with the middle cerebral artery complex and surrounding white matter pathways. Safe resection requires precise understanding of vascular landmarks and subcortical functional boundaries.
METHODS: Eight formalin-fixed adult cadaveric heads (16 hemispheres) underwent bilateral two-piece orbitozygomatic (OZ) transsylvian (TS) dissections. Endoscopic assistance (0° and 30°) was used selectively to enhance visualization of deep and anatomically concealed regions. Following cort

Blast-related mild traumatic brain injury (BR mTBI) is a critical research area in recent combat veterans due to increased prevalence of survived blasts. Post-BR mTBI outcomes are highly heterogeneous and defining neurological differences may help in discrimination and prediction of cognitive outcomes. This study investigates whether white matter integrity, measured with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), could influence how remote BR mTBI history is associated with executive control. The sample included 151 Veterans from the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center who were administered a cli

The microstructural characteristics of white and gray matter in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and the early-stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD) remain unclear. This study aimed to systematically identify the microstructural damages of MCI/AD in studies using neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI), and explore their correlations with cognitive performance. Multiple databases were searched for eligible studies. The 10 eligible NODDI studies were finally included. Patients with MCI/AD showed overall significant reductions in neurite density index (NDI) of specific white matter

Unsuccessful retrieval of proper names (PNs) is commonly observed in patients suffering from neurological conditions such as stroke or epilepsy. While a large body of works has suggested that PN retrieval relies on a cortical network centered on the left anterior temporal lobe (ATL), much less is known about the white matter connections underpinning this process. Sparse studies provided evidence for a possible role of the uncinate fasciculus, but the inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF) might also contribute, since it mainly projects into the ATL, interconnects it with the posterior lexical

PURPOSE: After treatment, pediatric brain tumor survivors (PBTS) face emotional and behavioral challenges, perhaps due to tumor or treatment-related changes in brain structures involved in emotion regulation, including those with fronto-limbic connections. We hypothesized that relative to healthy controls (HCs), PBTS would exhibit greater difficulties with behavior and emotional functioning, and display reduced mean fractional anisotropy (mFA) in white matter tracts with fronto-limbic connections including the cingulum bundle (CB), inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF), and uncinate fasc

PURPOSE: The inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF) and uncinate fasciculus (UF) are major fronto-capsular white matter pathways. IFOF connects frontal areas of the brain to parieto-occipital areas. UF connects ventral frontal areas to anterior temporal areas. Both fascicles are thought to subserve higher language and emotion roles. Controversy pertaining to their connectivity and subdivision persists in the literature, however.
METHODS: High-definition fiber tractography (HDFT) is a non-tensor tractographic method using diffusion spectrum imaging data. Its major advantage over tensor-ba

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by fears of social and performance situations. Cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT) has in general positive effects on symptoms, distress and avoidance in SAD. Prior studies found increased cortical volumes and decreased fractional anisotropy (FA) in SAD compared with healthy controls (HCs). Thirty-three participants diagnosed with SAD attended in a 10-week CBGT and were scanned before and after therapy. We applied three neuroimaging methods-surface-based morphometry, diffusion tensor imaging and network-based statistics-each with specific lo

BACKGROUND: Stroke often damages the basal ganglia, leading to atypical and transient aphasia, indicating that post-stroke basal ganglia aphasia (PSBGA) may be related to different anatomical structural damage and functional remodeling rehabilitation mechanisms. The basal ganglia contain dense white matter tracts (WMTs). Hence, damage to the functional tract may be an essential anatomical structural basis for the development of PSBGA.
METHODS: We first analyzed the clinical characteristics of PSBGA in 28 patients and 15 healthy controls (HCs) using the Western Aphasia Battery and neuropsychol

Indirect speech acts-responding "I forgot to wear my watch today" to someone who asked for the time-are ubiquitous in daily conversation, but are understudied in current neurobiological models of language. To comprehend an indirect speech act like this one, listeners must not only decode the lexical-semantic content of the utterance, but also make a pragmatic, bridging inference. This inference allows listeners to derive the speaker's true, intended meaning-in the above dialog, for example, that the speaker cannot provide the time. In the present work, we address this major gap by asking non-a

Disrupted white matter integrity and abnormal cortical thickness are widely reported in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the relationship between alterations in white matter connectivity and cortical thickness in OCD is unclear. In addition, the heritability of this relationship is poorly understood. To investigate the relationship of white matter microstructure with cortical thickness, we measure fractional anisotropy (FA) of white matter in 30 OCD patients, 19 unaffected siblings and 30 matched healthy controls. Then, we take those regions of significantly

Long-term fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) patients experience chronic pain, emotional disturbances, and poor treatment responses, yet the neural mechanisms underlying disease chronicity remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the white matter-gray matter functional connectivity (WM-GM FC) in long-term FMS patients to explore changes in brain network communication associated with chronicity and their relationship with clinical symptoms. A total of 52 FMS patients (30 long-term, 22 short-term) and 49 healthy controls (HCs) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
