A Segmentation Framework With Unsupervised Learning-Based Label Mapper for the Ventricular Target of Intracranial Germ Cell Tumor.

Intracranial germ cell tumors are rare tumors that mainly affect children and adolescents. Radiotherapy is the cornerstone of interdisciplinary treatment methods. Radiation of the whole ventricle system and the local tumor can reduce the complications in the late stage of radiotherapy while ensuring the curative effect. However, manually delineating the ventricular system is labor-intensive and time-consuming for physicians. The diverse ventricle shape and the hydrocephalus-induced ventricle dilation increase the difficulty of automatic segmentation algorithms. Therefore, this study proposed a

Towards precision oncology: unsupervised manifold learning for spatial molecular profiling in cancer tissues.

Precision oncology relies on the accurate characterization of spatial molecular distributions in cancer tissues to uncover critical biomarkers and guide clinical decision-making. However, the high dimensionality and complexity of mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) data pose significant challenges for effective analysis. This study presents an unsupervised manifold learning framework to address these challenges by mapping high-dimensional MSI data into a low-dimensional space while preserving essential molecular patterns. This method enables efficient dimensionality reduction, clustering, and visu

Deep Residual Compensation Model for Unsupervised PET Partial Volume Correction.

Partial volume effect (PVE) arises from the limited spatial resolution of positron emission tomography (PET) scanners, causing significant quantitative biases that hinder accurate metabolic activity assessment. To address these problems, we proposed an unsupervised deep residual compensation model (U-DRCM) for PET partial volume correction (PVC). U-DRCM first predicted an initial blur kernel for the PVE-affected PET image based on a conditional blind deconvolution module (CBD module). Then, a conditional residual compensation module (CRC module) was introduced to compensate for the error cause

Machine learning in time-lapse imaging to differentiate embryos from young vs old mice†.

Time-lapse microscopy for embryos is a non-invasive technology used to characterize early embryo development. This study employs time-lapse microscopy and machine learning to elucidate changes in embryonic growth kinetics with maternal aging. We analyzed morphokinetic parameters of embryos from young and aged C57BL6/NJ mice via continuous imaging. Our findings show that aged embryos accelerated through cleavage stages (from 5-cells) to morula compared to younger counterparts, with no significant differences observed in later stages of blastulation. Unsupervised machine learning identified two

An Integrated Machine Learning and Genomic Framework for Precise Detection of Gastric Cancer.

This study presents a novel integrative approach for the analysis of high-dimensional gene expression data, leveraging the complementary strengths of unsupervised clustering and supervised classification. Using K-means clustering, the data set is stratified into three distinct clusters, revealing intrinsic biological patterns and relationships. The resulting cluster assignments are subsequently used as pseudolabels to train machine learning models, including support vector machines, random forest, and a stacking ensemble classifier. To validate and enhance the robustness of clustering, complem

Learning from label proportions in brain-computer interfaces: Online unsupervised learning with guarantees.

OBJECTIVE: Using traditional approaches, a brain-computer interface (BCI) requires the collection of calibration data for new subjects prior to online use. Calibration time can be reduced or eliminated e.g., by subject-to-subject transfer of a pre-trained classifier or unsupervised adaptive classification methods which learn from scratch and adapt over time. While such heuristics work well in practice, none of them can provide theoretical guarantees. Our objective is to modify an event-related potential (ERP) paradigm to work in unison with the machine learning decoder, and thus to achieve a r

A Multi-stage Segmentation Method for Tongue Ecchymosis.

Tongue diagnosis is an important component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), in which tongue ecchymosis is the main diagnostic basis for the blood stasis syndrome of TCM. Most of the existing methods are unsupervised and cannot accurately segment tongue ecchymosis. In this paper, we propose a multi-stage segmentation method for tongue ecchymosis. We first employ an object detection model for rough localization of tongue ecchymosis, and then use the unsupervised clustering and the watershed transform for rough segmentation and fine segmentation of tongue ecchymosis respectively. To the bes

Exploring internal representations of self-supervised networks: few-shot learning abilities and comparison with human semantics and recognition of objects.

Recent advances in self-supervised learning have attracted significant attention from both machine learning and neuroscience. This is primarily because self-supervised methods do not require annotated supervisory information, making them applicable to training artificial networks without relying on large amounts of curated data, and potentially offering insights into how the brain adapts to its environment in an unsupervised manner. Although several previous studies have elucidated the correspondence between neural representations in deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and biological sy

A voyage on computer aided intelligent algorithms for the segmentation of brain tissues for neurodisorder diagnosis.

Neurodisorders pose a considerable burden to global health, frequently requiring early treatment and diagnosis to avoid irreversible cognitive and motor impairments. Segmentation of brain tissue is an essential task in neurodiagnostics due to its inability to accurately separate grey matter, white matter and cerebrospinal fluid within imaging modalities like MRI and CT. This article reviews the progress of brain tissue segmentation techniques from manual and semi-automated approaches to sophisticated machine learning and deep learning algorithms. It discusses how these contemporary methodologi

Predicting Long-Term Recovery of Consciousness in Prolonged Disorders of Consciousness Based on Coma Recovery Scale-Revised Subscores: Validation of a Machine Learning-Based Prognostic Index.

Prognosis of prolonged Disorders of Consciousness (pDoC) is influenced by patients' clinical diagnosis and Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R) total score. We compared the prognostic accuracy of a novel Consciousness Domain Index (CDI) with that of clinical diagnosis and CRS-R total score, for recovery of full consciousness at 6-, 12-, and 24-months post-injury. The CDI was obtained by a combination of the six CRS-R subscales via an unsupervised machine learning technique. We retrospectively analyzed data on 143 patients with pDoC (75 in Minimally Conscious State; 102 males; median age = 53 ye

Beyond predictive performance: Interpretability challenges and feature importance bias in XGBoost-based readmission models.

Song et al. report a machine-learning framework based on the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm for predicting 1-year unplanned readmissions among elderly patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). This commentary examines critical limitations in the interpretability and methodological robustness of such models. Extensive prior work has demonstrated that tree‑based algorithms can exhibit structural biases in feature‑importance estimates, particularly when predictors display substantial collinearity or heterogeneous measurement scales. SHAP explanations, by inheriting these model‑em

Latent diffusion autoencoders: Toward efficient and meaningful unsupervised representation learning in medical imaging - a case study on Alzheimer's disease.

This study presents Latent Diffusion Autoencoder (LDAE), a novel encoder-decoder diffusion-based framework for efficient and meaningful unsupervised learning in medical imaging, focusing on Alzheimer's disease (AD) using brain MRI from the ADNI database as a case study. Unlike conventional diffusion autoencoders operating in image space, LDAE applies the diffusion process in a compressed latent representation, improving computational efficiency and making 3D medical imaging representation learning tractable. To validate the proposed approach, we explore two key hypotheses: (i) LDAE effectively

Detecting acute pain signals from human EEG.

BACKGROUND: Advances in human neuroimaging has enabled us to study functional connections among various brain regions in pain states. Despite a wealth of studies at high anatomic resolution, the exact neural signals for the timing of pain remain little known. Identifying the onset of pain signals from distributed cortical circuits may reveal the temporal dynamics of pain responses and subsequently provide important feedback for closed-loop neuromodulation for pain. NEW METHOD: Here we developed an unsupervised learning method for sequential detection of acute pain signals based on multichanne
