Role of cultural analysis in patients with indwelling ureteral stent submitted to ureteroscopy for stones.

BACKGROUND: Aim of our study is to analyze the incidence of postoperative infectious complications and to assess its predictors in patients with indwelling ureteral stent treated with ureteroscopy (URS). METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated data of patients treated with URS from January 2017 to July 2018 at our center. We included 88 consecutive patients with available stent culture (SC) and urine culture (UC). Cefoxitin 2 g IV was given as prophylaxis in all patients with negative preoperative UC; otherwise, the choice of antibiotic was based on antibiogram. Ureteral stent was removed befor

Use of the ureteral access sheath during ureteroscopy: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The debate still rages on for the usefulness of ureteral access sheath (UAS). Therefore, a meta-analysis to discuss the effects of applying UAS during ureteroscopy was performed. The protocol for the review is available on PROSPERO (CRD42017052327). A literature search was conducted up to November, 2017 using the Web of science, PUBMED, EMBASE and Cochrane Library. The quality of articles was assessed by the Jadad scale and Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS). Egger's test and the trim-and-fill method were used to evaluate publication bias. Effect sizes were calculated by pooled odds ratio (ORs) and

Extraction-string ureteral stents and postoperative infection after flexible ureteroscopy: an IPTW-adjusted analysis.

Extraction-string ureteral stents facilitate non-cystoscopic removal after ureteroscopy, but concerns remain regarding postoperative infection and accidental dislodgement. We evaluated whether extraction-string stents were associated with postoperative infection after flexible ureteroscopic lithotripsy (fURSL) in a cohort restricted to procedures with the distal Double-J (D-J) stent portion positioned within the bladder. This retrospective observational study included 102 procedures in 92 unique patients: 58 extraction-string and 44 conventional non-string procedures. Postoperative infection w

Outcomes and management of de novo ureteral strictures following ureteroscopy: A retrospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Ureteral strictures are a recognised late complication post ureteroscopy (URS). Most research on the pathology focuses on mechanisms of injury and preventative strategies. There is limited data describing follow up patterns and treatment outcomes. The aim was to evaluate the subsequent management and outcomes of de novo ureteral strictures post URS. METHODS: Retrospective review was conducted of patients diagnosed with a de novo ureteral stricture post URS at a tertiary centre between 2014 and 2024. Eligible cases were identified by manual review of ICD-coded records (N13.0-N13.

Intrarenal pressure during ex-vivo flexible ureteroscopy: a pilot experimental study in cadaveric kidneys.

PURPOSE: Due to donor shortages, organ donation criteria have been expanded, and transplant societies encourage acceptance of kidneys with stones. Ex-vivo flexible ureteroscopy (eFURS) in these grafts is increasing. Although the technique is considered feasible, intrarenal pressure (IRP) during eFURS has not been characterized. This pilot study aimed to characterize IRP under different procedural conditions using a non-perfused cadaveric kidney model of eFURS and to describe associated ureteral findings. METHODS: Eight cadaveric kidneys were harvested, and eFURS was performed under four exper

Sand clearance vs. flowrate during ureteroscopy: studies in an in-vitro transparent kidney model.

PURPOSE: Suction has recently been introduced into the ureteroscopic armamentarium to improve stone fragment and debris clearance. However, the benefits of suction appear to be limited by current irrigation systems. This study aimed to measure the time to clear sand ureteroscopically from a transparent silicone kidney-ureter model at different flowrates and compare with results with conventional pressurized irrigation and intermittent suction. METHODS: A LithoVue™ Elite ureteroscope was inserted through a Clear Petra 11/13 Fr 46 cm or 12/14 Fr 50 cm FANS device into a transparent silicone kid

Longer Preoperative Antibiotic Duration Prior to High-Risk Ureteroscopy Does Not Decrease Infectious Complications.

Introduction: Postoperative infections after ureteroscopy are common and potentially devastating complications. National and international guidelines recommend treatment of symptomatic positive urine cultures prior to operation, but how to manage patients with asymptomatic colonization remains unclear. In clinical practice, there is wide variation in the choice and duration of antibiotics for these patients. To examine how preoperative antibiotic duration impacts postoperative infection rate, we evaluated our institutional practices and outcomes. Materials and Methods: Our prospectively collec
