BACKGROUND: Müllerian tract anomalies have been reported in 2-3% of females. Uterus didelphys, obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis (OHVIRA) syndrome is a rare condition, with only a few cases of the syndrome occurring during pregnancy having been reported.
CASE: A 35-year-old, nulli-gravid woman at 18 weeks of gestation was referred due to cervical incompetence. Her first symptom was genital bleeding. Ultrasonography and MRI led to the diagnosis of OHVIRA syndrome, and pregnancy was confirmed on the affected side with the amniotic sac found to be protruding from the cervix i

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome (HWWS) is a rare congenital anomaly of the female urogenital tract that associates Müllerian duct anomalies with mesonephric duct anomalies. The triad of uterus didelphys, obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis characterizes this syndrome. Patients generally present with non-specific symptoms after menarche. Pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, and palpable mass due to hematocolpos or hematometra are the most common findings. Pyohematocolpos and pyosalpinx may appear as acute complications, while endometriosis and pelvic adhesions constitute potential lon

Congenital disorders of development are more common than previously reported and the correct diagnosis is frequently missed leading to suboptimal treatment. Eight cases of uterus didelphys with obstructed hemivagina referred to the Gynecology service at Baylor College of Medicine over a 2-year period were reviewed. Initial presenting symptoms and signs were followed by an incorrect diagnosis by the referring physician 100% of the time. MRI, the most sensitive imaging modality for congenital anomalies (Kublik, RA: Female pelvis. Eur Radiol 1999; 9:1715), was utilized in only 50% of the cases. I

OBJECTIVE: Uterine anomalies (UA) occur in up to 6.7% of women. Breech is eight times more likely to occur with UA which may not be diagnosed prior to pregnancy and may only be found in the third trimester with breech. The objective of the study is to assess the prevalence of both already known and newly sonographically diagnosed UA in breech from 36 weeks of gestation and its impact on external cephalic version (ECV), delivery options and perinatal outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN: We recruited 469 women with breech at 36 weeks of gestation over a 2-year period at the Charité University Hospital, Berl

STUDY QUESTION: Does polycystic ovary syndrome influence the morphology of the uterus and the prevalence of congenital uterine anomalies?
SUMMARY ANSWER: Available evidence of very low quality shows a possible association between PCOS and some uterine anomalies.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Congenital uterine malformations range from subtle changes in uterine shapes to major morphologic deformities It is postulated that major anomalies result from the abnormal development of Mullerian ducts. However, the etiology of minor deformities is a subject of speculation. Many factors may impact the develop

Uterus didelphys is a rare Müllerian anomaly, often diagnosed during menarche or in women with a personal history of infertility and/or recurrent pregnancy loss. Its association with other genitourinary anomalies is frequent and may determine the existence of established syndromes. This case report refers to a 13-year-old female patient diagnosed with OHVIRA syndrome (Obstructed Hemivagina with Ipsilateral Renal Agenesis), a condition wherein the presence of a didelphic uterus is associated with hemivagina obstruction and ipsilateral renal agenesis. The patient presented with cyclic pelvic pai

INTRODUCTION: OHVIRA syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly of Müllerian duct development characterized by uterine didelphys, obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis. The primary treatment is surgical excision of the obstructed hemivaginal septum and hematometrial drainage. In recent years, minimally invasive approaches such as hysteroscopic or vaginoscopic septum resection have been reported. Furthermore, we originally developed some novel pneumovaginoscopic gynecologic surgeries for years using a device that consists of a cylinder that fits into the vagina and a lid that mounts

A case of simultaneous uterine and renal cell carcinoma in an elderly woman who had a septate vagina, double cervix, uterus didelphys, and a single kidney secondary to contralateral renal agenesis is reported. She was treated for a period of 8 months, first with pelvic irradiation followed by total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and subsequently with heminephrectomy. Her renal function was normal postoperatively. The patient died of congestive heart failure in June 1990 after being free of carcinoma for approximately 18 years. The authors believe that this is the on

OBJECTIVE: Müllerian anomalies are associated with increased risk of miscarriage, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and preterm birth. While a commonly implicated cause is restricted expansion of endometrial cavity, alternatively it could be due to abnormal placentation. We sought to examine clinical and histopathologic factors associated with preterm delivery in women with Müllerian anomalies.
STUDY DESIGN: One hundred and eleven singleton pregnancies in 85 women were analyzed retrospectively. There were 42 pregnancies with bicornaute, 24 with unicornuate, 24 with septate, 19 with didel

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome (HWWS) is a congenital Müllerian duct anomaly characterized by uterine didelphys, obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis. Little is reported about spinal deformity associated with this syndrome. This study presents a case of scoliosis occurring in the setting of HWWS and explores the possible association between the 2 diseases. A previously unreported scoliosis in HWWS is described. The patient is a 12-year-old Chinese female with scoliosis that underwent a posterior correction at thoracic 5-thoracic 12 (T5-T12) levels, using the Moss-SI (Johnso

McKusick-Kaufman syndrome (MKS) is an autosomal recessive multiple malformation syndrome characterized by hydrometrocolpos (HMC) and postaxial polydactyly (PAP). We report a case of a female child with MKS who was transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit of Seoul National University Children's Hospital on her 15th day of life for further evaluation and management of an abdominal cystic mass. She underwent abdominal sonography, magnetic resonance imaging, genitography and cystoscopy which confirmed HMC with a transverse vaginal septum. X-rays of the hand and foot showed bony fusion of th

BACKGROUND: Renal tract malformations are, on occasion, associated with uterine malformations. The transcription factor hepatocyte nuclear factor (HNF)-1beta is expressed from the earliest stages of development of the Wolffian duct, the mesonephros and metanephros, and the Müllerian ducts in the mouse. In adult mice HNF-1beta is expressed in the kidney tubules, collecting ducts, and in the oviducts and uterus in the female (Müllerian duct derivatives) and in the epididymis, vas deferens and seminal vesicles (Wolffian duct derivatives) in the male. HNF-1beta mutations have been reported in two

BACKGROUND: Membranous dysmenorrhea, characterized by the expulsion of intact endometrial tissue rather than gradual dissolution during menstruation, occasionally presents as a decidual cast-a complete triangular mold of the uterine cavity. This poorly understood condition is likely underdiagnosed.
OBJECTIVES: This study maps and describes the existing English literature on membranous dysmenorrhea and decidual cast expulsion, focusing on clinical presentation, etiology, and management.
SEARCH STRATEGY: A scoping review was conducted according to Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and PRISMA

Congenital uterine malformations are often difficult to classify, and an incorrect label can carry over for years across successive clinical records. We describe a 39-year-old woman, gravida 1 para 1, referred for chronic pelvic pain and intermenstrual bleeding, whose uterus had previously been recorded as didelphys. Pelvic magnetic resonance imaging, with T2-weighted sequences in three planes, T1-weighted and fat-saturated sequences, diffusion-weighted imaging, and post-gadolinium imaging, instead demonstrated a unicornuate uterus with a left, cavitated, non-communicating functional rudimenta
