The posterior vertebral body line: importance in the detection of burst fractures.

A review of the lateral radiographs and CT studies of 114 patients with burst fractures, 46 patients with combined injuries in whom bursting was a major component, and 82 patients with simple anterior compression fractures was performed to evaluate the integrity of the posterior vertebral body margin. This structure normally produces a single or bifid vertical line on the lateral radiograph. Disruption, displacement, or rotation of this line was found in all 114 patients with "pure" burst fractures. These abnormalities were also present in 36 of the 46 patients with combined burst injuries. In

[Surgical interventions on the vertebral bodies of the thoracic spine (author's transl)].

27 operations on the vertebral bodies of the thoracic spine are reported. Indications for operation included markedly progressive infantile and juvenile scoliosis, correction of severe kyphoses in congenital malformation, fractures, Scheuermann's disease and post-laminectomy as well as tuberculous spondylitis and tumors. The two uppermost thoracic vertebrae can be reached by the method of Southwick and Robinson, the two lowest vertebrae from an extraperitoreal-subdiaphragm approach. Thoracotomy was chosen for the remaining thoracic vertebrae. If the staff and material are available, operations

Complete Fusion of Three Lumbar Vertebral Bodies in Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Ankylosing spondylitis is a seronegative arthropathy of unknown etiology affecting mainly young adults. Acute or chronic changes of the spine such as sacroiliitis, spondylodiscitis, osteitis, ossification, and arthropathic lesions characterize the disease. Spinal involvement may accompany ossification of the ligaments, disc, end-plates and apophyseal structures, and seems to be bamboo spine. Here, we report a rare case describing the complete fusion of three lumbar vertebral bodies in ankylosing spondylitis. This rare case is presented alongside a literature review.

Is vertebral body stenting in combination with CaP cement superior to kyphoplasty?

PURPOSE: In the evolution of the minimally invasive treatment of vertebral compression fractures, vertebral body stenting (VBS) was developed to reduce intraoperative and secondary loss of vertebral height. Particularly in combination with the usage of biodegradable cement, the influence of VBS on the rate of intraoperative complications and long-term outcome is unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences between balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) and VBS regarding their long-term clinical and radiological outcome in combination with calcium phosphate (CaP) application instead

Bone edema of the whole vertebral body: an unusual case of spondyloarthritis.

Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is usually characterized by early inflammatory involvement of the sacroiliac joints (SI), which constitutes one of the most important classification criteria according to the SpondyloArthritis International Society (ASAS). These criteria do not include inflammatory spine lesions which can be detected on MRI, although spine involvement is very common in axial SpA. This is because spine MRI lesion often retrieved in SpA are not very specific, and can be found in many other diseases such as malignancy and osteoarthritis. Here we present the case of a 33-year old woman who

Anterior transsternal approach for a lesion in the upper thoracic vertebral body.

OBJECT: Access to the upper thoracic vertebrae has been hampered by numerous anatomical structures and is further impaired by the transition from cervical lordosis to thoracic kyphosis. Therefore, the authors endeavored to study an anterior transsternal approach for upper thoracic disease (T1–4). METHODS: Fifty-four patients with upper thoracic disease underwent anterior decompression and fusion with sternotomy. Ages in the 33 men and 21 women ranged from 37 to 69 years (average 49 years). Before surgery, there were 7 patients with Frankel Grade B function, 17 with Grade C, 21 with Grade D, a

[Posteriorinstrumental spinal fixation in tuberculous spondylitis and osteomyelitis of the vertebral bodies].

The short- and long-term results of surgical treatment were studied in 74 patients with tuberculous spondylitis and in 20 patients with chronic osteomyelitis of the vertebral column. All the patients underwent radical reconstructive operations on the anterior vertebral column if they had an active inflammatory process. The operations were supplemented by an interstitial posterior instrumental fixation with the Hurrington manipulation reduction frames or the plates, developed at the Central Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics, in 11 cases and with the Cotrel-Dubosse tools in 28 cases. The

The biomechanical effects of kyphoplasty on treated and adjacent nontreated vertebral bodies.

It remains unclear whether adjacent vertebral body fractures are related to the natural progression of osteoporosis or if adjacent fractures are a consequence of augmentation with bone cement. Experimental or computational studies have not completely addressed the biomechanical effects of kyphoplasty on adjacent levels immediately following augmentation. This study presents a validated two-functional spinal unit (FSU) T12-L2 finite element model with a simulated kyphoplasty augmentation in L1 to predict stresses and strains within the bone cement and bone of the treated and adjacent nontreated

A method for sonographic counting of the lower vertebral bodies in newborns and infants.

PURPOSE: To determine whether the lumbosacral junction of the vertebral column can be identified with sonography in newborns and infants and thus serve as a method for counting the lumbar and sacral vertebral bodies. METHODS: In 32 newborns and infants, the number of ossified vertebral bodies distal to the lumbosacral junction was counted with sonography and radiography. RESULTS: Sonographic and radiographic findings agreed in 29 of 32 examinations (91%). CONCLUSIONS: The lordotic transition at the lumbosacral junction can be identified with sonography in the majority of newborns and infant

Failure characteristics of osteoporotic vertebral bodies monitored by acoustic emission.

The third lumbar vertebrae of nine elderly subjects (average age, 81.4 +/- 6.7 years) graded osteoporotic and the second to fifth lumbar vertebrae of a 37-year-old man graded as normal were used to investigate microdamage accumulation during quasi-static compression loading with an acoustic emission detection system. Mechanical parameters (apparent elastic modulus, stress, and strain) and acoustic emission event count rates were measured simultaneously. The normalized mean value of any mechanical parameters of normal group was significantly high with respect to that of osteoporotic group. The

Magnetic resonance (MR) evaluation of bone marrow in vertebral bodies.

Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging was used to examine the hematopoietic bone marrow in the vertebral bodies of eight healthy subjects, and of 35 cancer patients who had been previously treated with radiation therapy. MR was instrumental in distinguishing viable hematopoietic tissue (red marrow) from adipose tissue (yellow marrow), whose presence reflected the extent of radiation-induced bone marrow injury. Different water content in proliferating hematopoietic tissue and adipose tissue enabled clear distinction of the two components even inside the same vertebral body. Three patterns of bone mar

The variability of vertebral body volume and pain associated with osteoporotic vertebral fractures: conservative treatment versus percutaneous transpedicular vertebroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVF) can lead to late collapse which often causes kyphotic spinal deformity, persistent back pain, decreased lung capacity, increased fracture risk and increased mortality. The purpose of our study is to compare the efficacy and safety of vertebroplasty against conservative management of osteoporotic vertebral fractures without neurologic symptoms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 66 patients with recent OVF on MRI examination were included in the study. All patients were admitted from September 2009 to September 2012. The cohort was divided int
