Retro-labyrinthine disorder in cases with peripheral facial palsy.

In some previously reported cases, facial palsy, even in Bell's palsy, involved vestibular dysfunction. Vestibular dysfunction in facial palsy is considered to be due to a retro-labyrinthine disorder such as vestibular neuronitis or acoustic neuromas. For the past 9 years we have been using the galvanic body sway test (GBST) routinely for differential diagnosis of the vestibular system. This paper reports GBST detected, retro-labyrinthine disorders in facial palsy. From 1981 to 1989, equilibrium examinations were performed in 33 cases with Bell's palsy and in 12 cases with Hunt's syndrome with

Distribution of glycogen phosphorylase and cytochrome oxidase in the central nervous system of the turtle Trachemys dorbigni.

Glycogen phosphorylase (GP) and cytochrome oxidase (CO) activities were mapped histochemically in the brain of the turtle Trachemys dorbigni. In the telencephalon, both activities occurred in the olfactory bulb, in all cortical areas, in the dorsal ventricular ridge, striatum, primordium hippocampi and olfactory tubercle. In the diencephalon, they were identified in some areas of the hypothalamus, and in rotundus and geniculate nuclei. Both reactions were detected in the oculomotor, trochlear, mesencephalic trigeminal nuclei, the nucleus of the posterior commissure, torus semicircularis, subst

Betahistine treatment improves the recovery of static symptoms in patients with unilateral vestibular loss.

Vestibular loss induces a combination of postural, oculomotor, and perceptive symptoms that are compensated over time. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of betahistine dihydrochloride on vestibular compensation. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was performed in Menière's disease patients who underwent a curative unilateral vestibular neurotomy (UVN). The effects of betahistine treatment were investigated on a broad spectrum of vestibular-induced changes resulting from vestibular loss: body sway, head orientation, ocular cyclotorsion, spontaneous nystagmus,

[Cavernous angiomas of the brain stem: auditory and vestibular manifestations].

AIMS: To establish the correlation between the clinical manifestations of hearing and balance disturbance and the anatomical site within the pons of cavernous angiomas, and to describe their clinical features, and the findings on ABR and MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two clinical cases of cavernous angioma with cochlear and vestibular manifestations underwent audiometric evaluation, with VNG and ABR as well as CT and MRI scans. CONCLUSION: Cavernous angiomas are rare (less than 2% of intra-cranial space-occupying lesions). Their most common topographical site is midline in the pons, and may gi

Spontaneous Nystagmus Violating the Alexander's Law: Neural Substrates and Mechanisms.

Alexander's law states that spontaneous nystagmus increases when looking in the direction of fast-phase and decreases during gaze in slow-phase direction. Disobedience to Alexander's law is occasionally observed in central nystagmus, but the underlying neural circuit mechanisms are poorly understood. In a retrospective analysis of 2,652 patients with posterior circulations stroke, we found a violation of Alexander's law in one or both directions of lateral gaze in 17 patients with lesions of unilateral lateral medulla affecting the vestibular nucleus. Patients with vestibular neuritis served a

Spatial symmetries in vestibular projections to the uvula-nodulus.

The discharge of secondary vestibular neurons relays the activity of the vestibular endorgans, occasioned by movements in three-dimensional physical space. At a slightly higher level of analysis, the discharge of each secondary vestibular neuron participates in a multifiber projection or pathway from primary afferents via the secondary neurons to another neuronal population. The logical organization of this projection determines whether characteristics of physical space are retained or lost. The logical structure of physical space is standardly expressed in terms of the mathematics of group th

Vestibulo-ocular reflex pathways in internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

We measured the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) during head impulses in a patient with right-sided internuclear ophthalmoplegia. Head impulses are rapid, passive, high-acceleration, low-amplitude head rotations in the direction of a particular semicircular canal (SCC). Adduction of the right eye was abnormally slow during right lateral SCC head impulses. The VOR during left posterior SCC impulses was severely deficient in both eyes, but the VOR during left anterior SCC impulses was only slightly deficient. We suggest that the vertical vestibulo-ocular pathways in humans are connected in SCC-plan

[Rare case of brain damage in a primary decompression sickness in a diver].

Pressure disease causes very infrequently multifocal injury to the cerebral hemispheres with resulting organic brain disease. The described case was observed in a diver who after correctly performed decompression without any evident faults in decompressions during several years of diving suffered diffuse, multifocal injury to the cerebral hemispheres and right vestibular nuclei. The authors stress the fact that decompression tables differ in various countries. There is no uniform safety decompression table for the divers. Besides that, such factors as individual sensitivity and resistance of t

Pharmacotherapy of vestibular and ocular motor disorders, including nystagmus.

We review current pharmacological treatments for peripheral and central vestibular disorders, and ocular motor disorders that impair vision, especially pathological nystagmus. The prerequisites for successful pharmacotherapy of vertigo, dizziness, and abnormal eye movements are the "4 D's": correct diagnosis, correct drug, appropriate dosage, and sufficient duration. There are seven groups of drugs (the "7 A's") that can be used: antiemetics; anti-inflammatory, anti-Ménière's, and anti-migrainous medications; anti-depressants, anti-convulsants, and aminopyridines. A recovery from acute vestibu

[Somatosensory-visual-vestibular interaction in a case of vermis agenesis].

It is well known that the somatosensory input is important for keep a balance as well as the visual and the vestibular inputs. However the knowledge of somatosensory-visual-vestibular interaction is incomplete at now. We have already made a mathematical model of these interactions by extension of the Raphan-Cohen model (Raphan et al, 1979) for visual-vestibular interaction with a direct and an indirect somatosensory pathway. This indirect somatosensory pathway has access to the common visual-vestibular velocity storage integrative mechanism. So the purpose of the present experiment was to veri

Vestibular evoked responses: a new frontier in equilibriometry.

Modern neurootology has proved that many vertigo patients suffer from central dysequilibrium states. As vertigo patients are very frequent amongst our patient population we have to increase our diagnostic as well as therapeutical efforts. Since 1965, eliciting vestibular evoked cortical potentials has been possible. A method of evoked responses based upon computation of several stimulus responses has been used since then. Besides we are also using the frequency analysis of representative epochs of ongoing vestibular-ocular or retino-ocular reactions has been used since then. For diagnostic pur

Medial vestibular nucleus in the guinea-pig: histaminergic receptors. I. An in vitro study.

Antihistaminergic drugs are currently used for the symptomatic treatment of vestibular-related syndromes such as vertigo and motion sickness. We therefore investigated whether histamine could modulate the firing of medial vestibular nuclei neurons (MVNn). Recently, we have demonstrated that different cell types are present among MVNn in guinea-pig brainstem slices. Bath-application of histamine at 10(-4) or 10(-5) M induced a small membrane depolarization accompanied by a slight decrease in membrane resistance and a reversible increase in spontaneous firing in all MVN cell types. These effects

Poly-symptomatology of chronic multi-canalicular benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: a deductive, inductive, and abductive narrative review.

This narrative review aims to present an overview of the symptomatology of chronic multi-canalicular benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (mc-BPPV) from deductive (what is believed to be known), inductive (what is likely), and abductive (hypothetical) perspectives. The purpose is to recognize these symptoms as expressions of an eventual mc-BPPV when they occur in patients with vestibular migraine, whiplash associated disorders (WAD) and other chronic pain disorders. These symptoms are often considered to be biopsychosocial conditions due to a lack of objective findings, that is, the absence of

Pigeon as a model to study peripheral projections from the horizontal semicircular canal vestibular apparatus to a brainstem target immunoreactive for AMPA.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether the pigeon (Columba livia) is a good model for evaluating the vestibular system involved with postural maintenance during movement. METHODS: This study maps the brainstem targets of the horizontal ampullary inputs from the vestibular periphery of the pigeon. We used biotin dextran amine (BDA) injection in horizontal semicircular canal (HSCC), immunohistochemistry for GluR2/3 and GluR4 AMPA and computerized histomorphology reconstruction. RESULTS: Our results show the same distribution pattern with ipsilateral projections to vestibular nuclear complex (VNC) from t

Positional and positioning vertigo and nystagmus.

Positional and positioning vertigo and nystagmus syndromes can be attributed to either peripheral or central vestibular dysfunction. The most common form is benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo which is caused by cupulolithiasis into the posterior semicircular canal. Other labyrinthine manifestations such as positional alcohol nystagmus, positional nystagmus with macroglobulinaemia and "heavy water" or glycerol ingestion occur because of a specific gravity differential between the cupula and the endolymph (buoyancy mechanism). Neurovascular compression of the vestibular nerve may be a causati

The cerebellar projection of the vestibular nerve in the cat.

The projection of the vestibular nerve to the cerebellum of the cat was examined with silver degeneration methods after complete lesions of the vestibular ganglion. The majority of the primary vestibular afferents were traced to the cortex of the ipsilateral nodulus and uvula, relatively fewer entering the ipsilateral flocculus. Fibers were not traced to the paraflocculus, lingula or lateral cerebellar nucleus. A sparse projection to the ipsilateral fastigial nucleus may exist, but it remains equivocal until confirmed with additional methods. Light microscopic examination of plastic sections c

Dicer Deletion in the Ear Can Cut Most Neurons and Their Innervation of Hair Cells to Project to the Ear and the Brainstem.

Dicer is crucial for the generation of microRNAs (miRNAs), which are essential for regulating gene expression and keeping neuronal health. Dicer's conditional deletion cuts all spiral ganglion neurons but spares a small fraction of vestibular ganglion neurons, innervating the utricle and part of the saccule. Hair cells develop in the utricle, saccule, posterior crista, and the cochlea in Pax2Cre; Dicerf/f. Cochlear hair cells develop at the base and expand the OHC and IHC in the middle, or split into a base/middle and the apex. In contrast, Foxg1Cre; Dicerf/f cuts all canal cristae and cochlea

Plasticity mechanisms in vestibular compensation in the cat are improved by an extract of Ginkgo biloba (EGb 761).

The effects of administration of an extract of Ginkgo biloba (EGb 761) on vestibular compensation was studied in unilateral vestibular neurectomized cats. This experimental model of CNS plasticity was investigated by using behavioral tests (postural disorders compensation, locomotor balance recovery), electrophysiological (spontaneous and evoked neck muscle activity) and neurophysiological (spontaneous firing rate recovery of deafferented vestibular cells) recordings, and immunocytochemical methods (synaptic loss and synaptic reoccupation within the deafferented vestibular nuclei). Cajal's contributions to vestibular research.

The Spanish neurohistologist Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934) is widely regarded as the father of modern Neuroscience. In addition to identifying the individuality of cells in the nervous system (the neuron theory) or the direction followed by nerve impulses (the principle of dynamic polarization), he described numerous details regarding the organization of the different structures of the nervous system. This task was compiled in his magnum opus, "Textura del Sistema Nervioso del Hombre y los Vertebrados," first published in Spanish between 1899 and 1904, and later revised and updated in Fre
