Constant radius blade spring suspended bench for vibration isolation.

High-precision measurements are typically isolated from ground motion to reduce seismic noise interference. We introduce a passive, spring-suspended optics bench for use inside a tabletop vacuum tank. The isolator uses four initially flat cantilever blade springs, loaded to a constant radius of curvature, to attenuate vertical motion. This type of constant curvature blade spring has the advantage of minimizing horizontal-vertical cross coupling around its suspension resonance frequency compared to other blade springs. We use finite element modeling to optimize the geometry of the constant radi

Doppler vibration measurement with a miniaturized slant-ended fiber.

Laser Doppler measurement technology, due to its high precision, is widely applied in the field of vibration detection. However, traditional Doppler vibrometers generally suffer from complex structures and bulky size, which limit their application in confined spaces. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a Doppler heterodyne measurement method based on a slant-ended fiber. The end face of the fiber is ground to form a specific inclination angle, which causes the reflected light from the end face to be coupled into the cladding for propagation. This design effectively suppresses the i

Evaluation of neurological testing for hand-arm vibration syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The neurological component of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) uses the Stockholm Workshop Scale sensorineural (SWS SN) stages for classification. Proximal compressive neuropathies are common in HAVS and the symptoms are similar to SN HAVS. The SWS may not be a valid staging tool if a patient has comorbid proximal compression neuropathy. AIMS: To evaluate the prevalence of proximal compression neuropathy in patients presenting for HAVS assessment and examine the association between compressive neuropathies and SWS SN. METHODS: A standardized assessment protocol was used to asse

An agent-based model of vibration-induced intimal hyperplasia.

Acute exposure to hand-arm transmitted vibrations (HAVs) may decrease the wall shear stress (WSS) exerted by the blood flow on the arterial endothelium. In the case of chronic exposure to HAVs, these WSS changes can lead to arterial growth and remodeling potentially induced by an intimal hyperplasia phenomenon. Accordingly, we implemented an agent-based model (ABM) that captures the hemodynamics-driven and mechanoregulated cellular mechanisms involved in vibration-induced intimal hyperplasia. Our ABM was combined with flow loop experiments that investigated the WSS-modulated secretion of the p

Cryoglobulins and cold agglutinins for hand arm vibration syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) is a condition caused by hand transmitted vibration from the use of hand-held vibrating tools or workpieces. The disease affects the vascular, neurological and musculoskeletal systems. The vascular component of HAVS is a form of secondary Raynaud's phenomenon. Other causes of disease must be excluded before attributing the cause to hand transmitted vibration. AIMS: To evaluate the prevalence, and utility of testing for, cryoglobulins and cold agglutinins in patients with HAVS symptoms. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 1183 patients refer

Antifriction Mechanism of Longitudinal Vibration-Assisted Insertion in DBS.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment for Parkinson's disease. The insertion of brain tissue is an important procedure that affects the whole operation and the sequela. During the insertion process, the friction between the tissue and the needle shaft is the main factor affecting the degree of tissue damage and the accuracy of target location. Vibration-assisted needle insertion has been shown to reduce friction during needle insertion into biological tissue. LuGre model is a friction model that includes coulomb friction and viscous friction between two contact surfaces and ac

Low-Frequency Vibration Facilitates Post-Exercise Cardiovascular Autonomic Recovery.

It is important to use short breaks to accelerate post-exercise recovery in sports. Previous studies have revealed that vibration can reduce post-exercise muscle soreness. However, there is still high heterogeneity in the effects of vibration on cardiovascular autonomic activities, and most studies to date have focused on high-frequency vibration. This study aimed to investigate the effect of low-frequency lower-body vibration (LBV) on post-exercise changes in heart rate variability and peripheral arterial tone. Ten men and 9 women aged 20 to 25 were recruited for this study. Each subject visi

Feasibility of Using Floor Vibration to Detect Human Falls.

With the increasing aging population in modern society, falls as well as fall-induced injuries in elderly people become one of the major public health problems. This study proposes a classification framework that uses floor vibrations to detect fall events as well as distinguish different fall postures. A scaled 3D-printed model with twelve fully adjustable joints that can simulate human body movement was built to generate human fall data. The mass proportion of a human body takes was carefully studied and was reflected in the model. Object drops, human falling tests were carried out and the v

Does Whole-Body Vibration Treatment Make Children's Bones Stronger?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize the last 10 years of literature regarding the effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) on bone in children, and if WBV results in increased bone acquisition. RECENT FINDINGS: WBV intervention appears to be a safe intervention with beneficial effects on bone mass in some diseases and syndromes, but there is still low evidence for WBV in clinical practice. The positive effects on muscle strength, balance, and walking speed are more conclusive. One of the takeaways of this review is that well-trained individuals may not further improve bone mass with WBV; thus, inter

Predicting Whole-Body Vibration Exposure in Canadian Prairie Farmers.

Direct workplace whole-body vibration exposure assessment provides ecological validity for evaluating health risk in epidemiological studies, yet it is complex and expensive in practical applications. Exposure prediction modeling could be a cost-efficient alternative to directly assessing occupational vibration exposures. The objective of this study was to model directly measured whole-body vibration exposures with predictors from machinery, farm, and self-reported characteristics among Canadian prairies farmers. As per ISO 2631-1, whole-body vibration data were measured on the seat surface at

Low-intensity vibration increases cartilage thickness in obese mice.

Obesity is associated with an elevated risk of osteoarthritis (OA). We examined here whether high fat diet administered in young mice, compromised the attainment of articular cartilage thickness. Further, we sought to determine if low-intensity vibration (LIV) could protect the retention of articular cartilage in a mouse model of diet-induced obesity. Five-week-old, male, C57BL/6 mice were separated into three groups (n = 10): Regular diet (RD), High fat diet (HF), and HF + LIV (HFv; 90 Hz, 0.2g, 30 min/d, 5 d/w) administered for 6 weeks. Additionally, an extended HF diet study was run for 6 m

Vibration from freight trains fragments sleep: A polysomnographic study.

As the number of freight trains on railway networks increases, so does the potential for vibration exposure in dwellings nearby to freight railway lines. Nocturnal trains in particular are of particular importance since night-time exposure may interfere with sleep. The present work investigates the impact of vibration and noise from night-time freight trains on human sleep. In an experimental polysomnographic laboratory study, 24 young healthy volunteers with normal hearing were exposed to simulated freight pass-bys with vibration amplitudes of 0.7 and 1.4 mm/s either 20 or 36 times during the

Whole-body vibration and occupational physical performance: a review.

INTRODUCTION: In the occupational environment, there are a considerable number of stressors that can affect physical performance in job tasks. Whole-body vibration (WBV), which arises from vehicle transit, is one such stressor that has been demonstrated to alter human function in several ways. This study identifies the known physical changes to human function which result from WBV, to comment on changes which may translate to performance in physically demanding occupational tasks. METHODS: A systematic review is performed on the literature relating to changes in the neuromuscular, physiologic

Dupuytren's contracture and occupational exposure to hand-transmitted vibration.

AIMS: The relation between Dupuytren's contracture and occupational exposure to hand-transmitted vibration (HTV) has frequently been debated. We explored associations in a representative national sample of workers with well-characterised exposure to HTV. METHODS: We mailed a questionnaire to 21 201 subjects aged 16-64 years, selected at random from the age-sex registers of 34 general practices in Great Britain and to 993 subjects chosen randomly from military pay records, asking about occupational exposure to 39 sources of HTV and about fixed flexion contracture of the little or ring finger.

Cold haemagglutinin disease misdiagnosed as hand-arm vibration syndrome.

A patient with a diagnosis of hand-arm vibration syndrome was referred for a second opinion. He worked as a multi-skilled operative in the housing department of a local authority, a job not normally associated with high levels of exposure to hand-transmitted vibration ( > 2.5 m/s(2) A(8)). He described blanching of his fingers and a blue discolouration of his extremities in cold weather. On examination, his fingertips, toes and pinnae were acrocyanotic, the fingers were patchily pale and sensation was subjectively impaired in all of the digits. Investigations revealed a haemolytic anaemia and
