Floodplain methylmercury biomagnification factor higher than that of the contiguous river (South River, Virginia USA).

Mercury biomagnification on the South River floodplain (Virginia, USA) was modeled at two locations along a river reach previously modeled for methylmercury movement through the aquatic trophic web. This provided an opportunity to compare biomagnification in adjoining trophic webs. Like the aquatic modeling results, methylmercury-based models provided better prediction than those for total mercury. Total mercury Food Web Magnification Factors (FWMF, fold per trophic level) for the two locations were 4.9 and 9.5. Methylmercury FWMF for the floodplain locations were higher (9.3 and 25.1) than th

Immunodiagnosis of Tuberculosis: New Questions, New Tools Virginia, VA, USA. 21-23 September 2008. Abstracts.

Human infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis exists as a spectrum of conditions ranging from asymptomatic infection to active disease. Novel, accurate tuberculosis immunodiagnostics have been introduced over the last decade, but it remains challenging to timely diagnose active disease and to accurately distinguish asymptomatic M. tuberculosis infection from immune memory resulting from a prior infection eradicated by the host response. The conference titled Immunodiagnosis of Tuberculosis: New Questions, New Tools, which was held on September 21-23, 2008 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, United

Alcohol and other drug use among victims of motor-vehicle crashes--West Virginia, 2004-2005.

Alcohol use is a well-established risk factor for motor-vehicle crashes. In 2005, approximately 39% of all traffic fatalities in the United States were alcohol related. Evidence of driver impairment from use of drugs other than alcohol is less definitive. In 2005, an estimated 4.3% of persons in the United States reported driving under the influence of a drug used recreationally during the preceding year, and an unknown percentage drove while impaired by drugs being used for medical reasons. To measure the prevalence of alcohol and drug use among persons killed in motor-vehicle crashes in West

Type B botulism outbreak caused by a commercial food product. West Virginia and Pennsylvania, 1973.

In the week of May 7, 1973, seven persons contracted botulism after eating together. The most common symptoms were vomiting, constipation, dry mouth, dysphagia, and dysphonia. All were treated with trivalent botulinal antitoxin, and none died. Serum specimens obtained from all seven patients were negative for botulinal toxin, but stool specimens from three patients were positive for type B toxin. Electromyographic studies performed on five patients documented the neurophysiologic abnormalities of botulism. Commercially canned peppers in oil were implicated epidemiologically, and type B toxin w

Trends in Abortion Utilization in West Virginia During a Period of Increased Abortion Restrictions, 2013-2020.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze changes in method, gestational duration, and out-of-state travel for abortion care in West Virginia and for West Virginians during a timeframe with increasingly restrictive abortion legislation and decreasing abortion availability. METHODS: We used publicly available data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and data obtained from the Guttmacher Institute to calculate abortion rates by state of occurrence and state of residence and describe trends in abortion by gestational duration and method from 2013 to 2020. We constructed a timeline of abortion restri

Medicaid policy change and the association between insurance and postpartum permanent contraception fulfillment in West Virginia.

BACKGROUND: The federal 30-day waiting period for Medicaid-covered female permanent contraception (PC) is a known barrier to timely fulfillment. In July 2020, West Virginia became the first state to bypass this waiting period by using state funds to support procedures that do not meet the waiting period for federal funding. OBJECTIVES: To assess changes in postpartum fulfillment of PC requests following West Virginia's 2020 Medicaid policy change. DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of patients who delivered at ⩾20 weeks of gestation at West Virginia University Hospital in 2

Clonal Diversity, Antibiotic Resistance, and Virulence Factor Prevalence of Community Associated Staphylococcus aureus in Southeastern Virginia.

Staphylococcus aureus is a significant human pathogen with a formidable propensity for antibiotic resistance. Worldwide, it is the leading cause of skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI), septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, and infective endocarditis originating from both community- and healthcare-associated settings. Although often grouped by methicillin resistance, both methicillin-resistant (MRSA) and methicillin-sensitive (MSSA) strains are known to cause significant pathologies and injuries. Virulence factors and growing resistance to antibiotics play major roles in the pathogenicity of comm

Alirocumab in Acute Myocardial Infarction: Results From the Virginia Commonwealth University Alirocumab Response Trial (VCU-AlirocRT).

Alirocumab improves outcomes in patients with a history of recent acute coronary syndrome, but treatment acutely at the time of myocardial infarction is untested. We present the results of a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded pilot study of alirocumab treatment at the time of non-ST elevation MI (NSTEMI). Twenty patients with type 1 NSTEMI and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) >70 mg/dL despite high intensity statin therapy were randomized 1:1 to one dose of alirocumab 150 mg subcutaneously or placebo within 24 hours of presentation. Genetic differentiation of spring-spawning and fall-spawning male Atlantic sturgeon in the James River, Virginia.

Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus, Acipenseridae) populations are currently at severely depleted levels due to historic overfishing, habitat loss, and pollution. The importance of biologically correct stock structure for effective conservation and management efforts is well known. Recent improvements in our understanding of Atlantic sturgeon migrations, movement, and the occurrence of putative dual spawning groups leads to questions regarding the true stock structure of this endangered species. In the James River, VA specifically, captures of spawning Atlantic sturgeon and acc

Predictors of engaging in problem gambling treatment: data from the West Virginia Problem Gamblers Help Network.

Gambling help-lines are an essential access point, or frontline resource, for treatment seeking. This study investigated treatment engagement after calling a gambling help-line. From 2000-2007 over 2,900 unique callers were offered an in-person assessment appointment. Logistic regression analyses assessed predictors of (a) accepting the referral to the in-person assessment appointment and (b) attending the in-person assessment appointment. Over 76% of callers accepted the referral and 55% of all callers attended the in-person assessment appointment. This treatment engagement rate is higher tha

Acanthosis nigricans as a clinical marker to detect insulin resistance in Caucasian children from West Virginia.

The accuracy of acanthosis nigrcans (AN) as a dermatological clinical marker to predict insulin resistance (IR) has not been well established in children. A cohort of obese Caucasian children was prospectively recruited. Demographic data, body mass index values, and laboratory data were compared for the presence or absence of AN. A total of 76 children participated. In all, 46 (60.5%) children had AN, and 34 (44.7%) children were positive for IR (>3.16); 25 (32.9%) children were positive for both AN and IR. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and accuracy level f

Factors associated with control of hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and diabetes among low-income women in West Virginia.

BACKGROUND: Adequate control of cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and diabetes, requires management. Low-income women living in rural areas with limited health services may experience special challenges in managing chronic conditions. METHODS: In 2008, we conducted an analysis of the baseline, cross-sectional survey of 733 uninsured, low-income, rural women aged 40-64 years participating in the Well-Integrated Screening and Evaluation for Women Across the Nation (WISEWOMAN) project in West Virginia to characterize prevalence, treatment, and control of hy

Eosinophilic esophagitis disease in children from West Virginia: a review of the last decade (1995-2004).

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a newly established disease in adults and children. The incidence and prevalence of the disease among children from the United States are largely unknown. We examined the endoscopy reports of children who attended our gastroenterology clinic in the last 10 yr. MATERIALS A AND METHODS: retrospective review of all diagnostic upper endoscopy procedures was executed between 1995-2004, of which a quarter (25%) per each year was randomly selected for pathological reevaluation of the number of Eos. The diagnosis of EoE was established when higher than 15

Types and characteristics of ramp-related motor vehicle crashes on urban interstate roadways in Northern Virginia.

PROBLEM: Freeway entrance and exit ramp interchanges are the sites of far more crashes per mile driven than other segments of interstate highways, but the characteristics and circumstances of ramp crashes have been the subject of relatively little recent research. METHOD: This study examined a sample of 1,150 crashes that occurred on heavily traveled urban interstate ramps in Northern Virginia. Based on a review of diagrams and narrative descriptions from police crash reports, the most common crash types were identified and examined for different roadway locations and ramp designs and by whet

Physical violence during the 12 months preceding childbirth--Alaska, Maine, Oklahoma, and West Virginia, 1990-1991.

In addition to clearly defined health risks that develop during pregnancy (e.g., toxemia and diabetes), pregnant women are at risk for physical violence inflicted by intimate partners. Although estimates in public and private health-care settings indicate that 4%-17% of women experience violence during pregnancy, population-based prevalence estimates of this problem have not been available. This report uses 1990 and 1991 data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) in Alaska, Maine, Oklahoma, and West Virginia to assess the prevalence of physical violence against women dur

Univariate genetic analysis of oxygen transport regulation in children: the Medical College of Virginia Twin Study.

We investigated the relative contributions of genetic, individual environmental, and shared environmental effects on 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (DPG) regulation in preadolescent children. In a population of 165 early pubescent boy and girl twin pairs (11.4 y old), of whom 63 were passive smokers, we asked: 1) Are there differences in the control of DPG levels between early pubertal boys and girls? 2) If present, are these differences influenced by exposure to passive cigarette smoke? Non-passive-smoking boys and girls had similar DPG levels. With exposure to passive smoke, DPG levels increased in
