Visual Pathways in Humans With Ephrin-B1 Deficiency Associated With the Cranio-Fronto-Nasal Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Numerous animal studies demonstrated the importance of components of the ephrin/Eph system for correct visual system development. Analogous investigations in humans are entirely missing. Here, we examined the visual system in humans with ephrin-B1 deficiency, which is x-linked and associated with the cranio-fronto-nasal syndrome (CFNS) in heterozygous females. METHODS: For one male hemizygous for ephrin-B1 deficiency and three affected heterozygous females with molecular-genetically confirmed mutations, the integrity of the partial decussation of the optic nerves was assessed with vi

Distinguishing and quantification of the human visual pathways using high-spatial-resolution diffusion tensor tractography.

Quantification of the living human visual system using MRI methods has been challenging, but several applications demand a reliable and time-efficient data acquisition protocol. In this study, we demonstrate the utility of high-spatial-resolution diffusion tensor fiber tractography (DTT) in reconstructing and quantifying the human visual pathways. Five healthy males, age range 24-37years, were studied after approval of the institutional review board (IRB) at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. We acquired diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data with 1-mm slice thickness on a

Normal computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging anatomy of the globe, orbit, and visual pathways.

The presence of bone and fat in the orbit provide high contrast with normal structures on both CT and MR images. In patients with visual deficits or oculomotor paralysis, imaging studies should include the intracranial cavity to evaluate the visual pathways back to the occipital cortex and the cranial nerves within the cavernous sinuses and brainstem. Magnetic resonance images display the intracranial anatomy in exquisite detail. Fat-suppressed magnetic resonance sequences should be used in conjunction with gadolinium enhancement.

Visual evoked potentials in multiple sclerosis: P100 latency and visual pathway damage including the lateral geniculate nucleus.

OBJECTIVE: To explore associations of the main component (P100) of visual evoked potentials (VEP) to pre- and postchiasmatic damage in multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS: 31 patients (median EDSS: 2.5), 13 with previous optic neuritis (ON), and 31 healthy controls had VEP, optical coherence tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. We tested associations of P100-latency to the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL), ganglion cell/inner plexiform layers (GCIPL), lateral geniculate nucleus volume (LGN), white matter lesions of the optic radiations (OR-WML), fractional anisotropy of non-

Dark Rearing in the Visual Critical Period Causes Structural Changes in Myelinated Axons in the Adult Mouse Visual Pathway.

An appropriate sensory experience during the early developmental period is important for brain maturation. Dark rearing during the visual critical period delays the maturation of neuronal circuits in the visual cortex. Although the formation and structural plasticity of the myelin sheaths on retinal ganglion cell axons modulate the visual function, the effects of dark rearing during the visual critical period on the structure of the retinal ganglion cell axons and their myelin sheaths are still unclear. To address this question, mice were reared in a dark box during the visual critical period

Latency of Multifocal Visual Evoked Potential in Multiple Sclerosis: A Visual Pathway Biomarker for Clinical Trials of Remyelinating Therapies.

PURPOSE: Acute focal demyelination is the characteristic feature of multiple sclerosis, with the majority of damaged axons undergoing limited remyelination and forming chronic lesions. Potential remyelinating agents are currently under development and there is therefore an urgent need for reliable in vivo biomarkers of remyelination. This study aimed to investigate potential changes in multifocal visual evoked potentials' (mfVEPs) latency in a cohort of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients. The potential sample size required for a remyelination-based clinical trial using diff

Evaluation of two treatment outcome prediction models for restoration of visual fields in patients with postchiasmatic visual pathway lesions.

Visual functions of patients with visual field defects after acquired brain injury affecting the primary visual pathway can be improved by means of vision restoration training. Since the extent of the restored visual field varies between patients, the prediction of treatment outcome and its visualization may help patients to decide for or against participating in therapies aimed at vision restoration. For this purpose, two treatment outcome prediction models were established based on either self-organizing maps (SOMs) or categorical regression (CR) to predict visual field change after interven

Congenital absence of optic chiasm: demonstration of an uncrossed visual pathway using monocular flash visual evoked potentials.

A 35 month old child was referred for electrophysiology testing with pendular nystagmus, corresponding head oscillations and reduced vision. Flash visual evoked potential (VEP) revealed large responses at the right occiput (but not the left occiput) from the right eye and similar large responses at only the left occiput from the left eye, indicating absent/deficient crossover at the chiasm. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan subsequently confirmed absence of the optic chiasm. There was no other evidence of midline brain defects. Her subsequent development to age 11 has been followed. The

Modular organization of occipito-temporal pathways: cortical connections between visual area 4 and visual area 2 and posterior inferotemporal ventral area in macaque monkeys.

The modular organization of cortical pathways linking visual area 4 (V4) with occipital visual area 2 (V2) and inferotemporal posterior inferotemporal ventral area (PITv) was investigated through an analysis of the patterns of retrogradely labeled cell bodies after injections of tracers into V4 and PITv. Although cytochrome oxidase or other stains have failed to yield reliable independent anatomical markers for cortical modules beyond V1 and V2, V4 and PITv seem to have modular compartments with specific patterns of cortico-cortical connectivity. Tracer injections of V4 labeled cells in V2 (1)

Increased Self-Grooming Gates Adult Visual Cortical Plasticity through a Ventral Pallidum-Visual Cortex Pathway.

Repetitive behaviors are prominent features of multiple neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders, which are frequently accompanied by abnormalities in visual processing. However, whether repetitive behavioral states themselves actively regulate visual system and through what neural mechanisms remain unclear. Using a water spray paradigm that selectively increased self-grooming in male mice, we showed ocular-dominance plasticity in adult primary visual cortex (V1) was markedly enhanced. Neurons in the ventral pallidum (VP) were activated in synchrony with self-grooming behavior. VP inhibiti

The incidence and nature of visual pathway involvement in Friedreich's ataxia. A clinical and visual evoked potential study of 22 patients.

Pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials (VEP) were recorded from 22 patients (mean age 33.7 years) with Friedreich's ataxia, 15 of whom also had a detailed neuro-ophthalmological assessment prior to the VEP examination. None had noted symptomatic visual impairment. Eleven of the 15 (73 per cent) examined clinically had one or more neuro-ophthalmic abnormality and 14/22 (64 per cent) had an abnormal VEP study which was always binocular and comprised absent responses, or most commonly, increased P100 component latencies. The maximum P100 latency was 143 ms and the group mean was 118 ms. The P1

A novel EEG paradigm to simultaneously and rapidly assess the functioning of auditory and visual pathways.

Objective assessment of the sensory pathways is crucial for understanding their development across the life span and how they may be affected by neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., autism spectrum) and neurological pathologies (e.g., stroke, multiple sclerosis, etc.). Quick and passive measurements, for example, using electroencephalography (EEG), are especially important when working with infants and young children and with patient populations having communication deficits (e.g., aphasia). However, many EEG paradigms are limited to measuring activity from one sensory domain at a time, may be

Category-selective processing in the two visual pathways as a function of stimulus degradation by noise.

Understanding the organising principles and functional properties of the primate brain's numerous visually responsive cortical regions is one of the major goals in cognitive neuroscience. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have revealed that neural responses in higher-order visual cortex are shaped by object categories, task context, and spatiotemporal regularities. Beyond these properties, visual processing in the ventral pathway has been shown to be tightly linked to perceptual awareness, while the evidence regarding dorsal visual processing and awareness is mixed. Most pre

Plasticity of Visual Pathways and Function in the Developing Brain: Is the Pulvinar a Crucial Player?

The pulvinar is the largest of the thalamic nuclei in the primates, including humans. In the primates, two of the three major subdivisions, the lateral and inferior pulvinar, are heavily interconnected with a significant proportion of the visual association cortex. However, while we now have a better understanding of the bidirectional connectivity of these pulvinar subdivisions, its functions remain somewhat of an enigma. Over the past few years, researchers have started to tackle this problem by addressing it from the angle of development and visual cortical lesions. In this review, we will d

Dissociated α-band modulations in the dorsal and ventral visual pathways in visuospatial attention and perception.

Modulations of occipito-parietal α-band (8-14 Hz) power that are opposite in direction (α-enhancement vs. α-suppression) and origin of generation (ipsilateral vs. contralateral to the locus of attention) are a robust correlate of anticipatory visuospatial attention. Yet, the neural generators of these α-band modulations, their interdependence across homotopic areas, and their respective contribution to subsequent perception remain unclear. To shed light on these questions, we employed magnetoencephalography, while human volunteers performed a spatially cued detection task. Replicating previous

Segregated pathways carrying frontally derived top-down signals to visual areas MT and V4 in macaques.

The bottom-up processing of visual information is strongly influenced by top-down signals, at least part of which is thought to be conveyed from the frontal cortex through the frontal eye field (FEF) and the lateral intraparietal area (LIP). Here we investigated the architecture of multisynaptic pathways from the frontal cortex to the middle temporal area (MT) of the dorsal visual stream and visual area 4 (V4) of the ventral visual stream in macaques. In the first series of experiments, the retrograde trans-synaptic tracer, rabies virus, was injected into MT or V4. Three days after rabies inje
