In this study we explored the validity of clinician judgments of voice abnormalities as indicators of penetration-aspiration or other swallowing abnormalities. Voice samples were collected using a high-quality microphone from 40 adults during videofluoroscopy (VFSS), at baseline and following each of four thin liquid swallows. Blinded speech-language pathologists (SLPs) rated the audio recordings for voice quality using the GRBAS scale and the VFSS recordings for abnormal swallow onset, penetration-aspiration, airway closure, and pharyngeal residues. Acoustic measures of % jitter, % shimmer, a

The Voice Activity and Participation Profile (VAPP) is a self-assessment questionnaire describing the limitation of activities and participation of individuals with dysphonia. In this study, the validity and reliability of the Finnish translation of the VAPP was evaluated using 43 outpatients with various functional and organic voice disorders. A control group was formed consisting of 43 subjects matched according to age, gender, and profession, with normal voices. The VAPP was sensitive for voice disorders and items in the questionnaire had high internal consistency. The VAPP had a strong cor

The human voice is a major signal transmission modality for our species. Accordingly, perception of its quality serves as an intraspecific window into the status of an individual's health, robusticity, and even stature in the group. Diminished quality-as may occur in aging or certain diseases-is a major feature in the lessening of an individual's communication modality. Here, we review the underlying anatomy and function that comprise the voice producing elements-the vocal tract sensu lato-from the lungs through the larynx and supralaryngeal modifying elements. Aspects of the aging larynx and

INTRODUCTION: Dysphonia assessment includes approaches like acoustic analysis, which is non-invasive and easy to use and provides an understandable numerical output. The Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) is an acoustic model that can detect dysphonia. The Persian language is spoken by around 70,000,000 native speakers. Since AVQI versions 2.06 and 3.01 have not been validated for the Persian yet, this study investigated their concurrent validity and diagnostic accuracy among the Persian-speaking population.
METHODS: This scale development study was conducted from 2020 to 2021 on 180 normoph

INTRODUCTION: The presence of a vocal fold mass implies high mechanical stress at the vocal fold base during vibration and an impaired glottic closure. However, evidence about its potential effects on diagnostic tools used in voice evaluation is lacking. We aimed to evaluate the impact of the location, laterality, and size of a unilateral unique vocal fold lesion on patient self-assessment questionnaires, acoustic-aerodynamic voice measures, and perceptual voice evaluation (GRBAS scale).
METHODS: A retrospective chart review involving patients with a diagnosis of a unique unilateral vocal fol

Emotional state affects the physiological mechanism involved in phonation. Differences in acoustical parameters of the voice under stress have been attributed to the coping mechanism used, which is based on the individual's perception of the situation. This study examines the relationship between coping strategies, personality, and voice in female subjects, ranging in age from 19.3-55.7 years, diagnosed with vocal nodules or polyps. The differences between coping strategies and personality are examined and compared with another group with no history of voice pathology. The relationship of pers

OBJECTIVE: Early-stage glottic cancer (ESGC) is a malignancy of the head and neck. Besides disease control, preservation and improvement of voice quality are essential. To enable expectation management and well-informed decision-making, patients should be sufficiently counseled with individualized information on expected voice quality. This study aims to develop an individualized dynamic prediction model for patient-reported voice quality. This model should be able to provide individualized predictions at every time point from intake to the end of follow-up.
STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal cohort

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the vocal fold structural and vibratory symmetries that are important to vocal function and voice quality in a simulated paramedian vocal fold paralysis.
METHOD: A computational kinematic speech production model was used to simulate an exemplar "voice" on the basis of asymmetric settings of parameters controlling glottal configuration. These parameters were then altered individually to determine their effect on maximum flow declination rate, spectral slope, cepstral peak prominence, harmonics-to-noise ratio, and perceived voice quality.
