Warming up is a generally accepted practice that leads to improved performance and reduces the risk of injury in a wide range of sports. However, the evidence about the influence of warm-up in combat sports is limited and, specifically, little is known about the impact which delays between a warm-up and the start of a match may have on fighters' performance. This study investigates the influence of warm-up and cool-down on one of significant performance predictors in full-contact combat sports, the peak force of a rear hand strike, in a sample of 31 athletes.Peak impact force was measured befo

BACKGROUND: Vehicle extrication of crash victims is a highly-demanding challenge, due to the frequently life-threatening injuries of entrapped occupants. In this phase, crash victims are often exposed to the outdoor-temperature, with the risk of sustained hypothermia. Hypothermia can significantly raise the morbidity and mortality rates of crash victims. Therefore, we have correlated the incidence of severe car accidents with entrapped patients, the outdoor conditions, and expenditure of time for extrication. Furthermore, different warming strategies have been evaluated regarding their integra

Muscle strain is a very common injury. Muscles that are frequently involved cross two joints, act mainly in an eccentric fashion, and contain a high percentage of fast-twitch fibers. Muscle strain usually causes acute pain and occurs during strenuous activity. In most cases, the diagnosis can be made on the basis of the history and physical examination. Magnetic resonance imaging is recommended only when radiologic evaluation is necessary for diagnosis. Initial treatment consists of rest, ice, compression, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug therapy. As pain and swelling subside, physical

INTRODUCTION: Older and frail patients with cancer are at high risk of physical and functional decline during chemotherapy. Exercise interventions can often counteract chemotherapy related toxicity and may help patients to improve or retain physical function and quality of life. Studies evaluating feasibility and the effect of exercise in older patients are lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility and effect of an exercise intervention in older frail patients during chemotherapy for colorectal cancer (CRC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a secondary analysis from the

A respiratory warm-up (RWU) can improve exercise performance in able-bodied athletes. However, its effects in paraplegic individuals are unknown. On two occasions, nine male active paraplegic individuals performed an arm cranking test to exhaustion at 85% of their peak power output. In the intervention (INT) trial, this procedure was preceded by a RWU, whereas in the control (CON) trial, no RWU was conducted. Time to exhaustion was reduced following the RWU (CON vs. INT: 497 ± 163 vs. 425 ± 126 s, P = 0.02). Pulmonary ventilation was increased in the middle (74.8 ± 18.0 vs. 78.3 ± 19.6 L min(-

This study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of the Advanced Throwers Ten Exercise Program (ATTEP) as an injury-prevention exercise program and to assess how ATTEP may serve as a viable aid to the long-term health and performance of badminton players, with the aim of filling a gap in the current literature. Our search identified 100 records; 13 were removed, leaving 87 for screening. After title and abstract screening, 35 studies met the eligibility criteria. Of these, 25 underwent detailed quality appraisal, with 6 subsequently excluded for not fully meeting the predefined age, injury-site

Increased muscle temperature (Tm) enhances exercise performance but can decrease during the transition period between the warm-up and the competition. Although passive warming strategies can maintain Tm, the optimal heating temperatures and their effects on performance are unclear. Seventeen healthy males participated in this study with four experimental conditions: no intervention (CON), hot water immersion at 36°C (HWI36), 39°C (HWI39), and 42°C (HWI42) during a 20-min transition period. Vertical jump (VJ) performance, core temperature (Tc), the heart rate (HR), and perceived thermal comfort

BACKGROUND: Greater availability of community exercise facilities is recommended to promote physical activity in the large number of people with chronic disease. The Heart Wise Exercise (HWE) program encourages existing community-based exercise facilities to build capacity to serve such patients, by working with interested facilities to ensure they meet safety criteria, and educating exercise leaders.
METHODS: Using a piloted checklist, 45 HWE programs were audited for the six HWE criteria (outlined below) in the greater Ottawa and Toronto areas of Ontario, Canada. A survey was also administe

During high-intensity (HI) exercise, metabolic acidosis significantly impairs exercise performance. Increasing the body's buffering capacity through training and exogenous intake of alkalizing supplements may improve high-intensity performance. Manipulating water and diet intake may influence the acid-base balance. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of mineral water rich in bicarbonate ions (STY) or placebo water (PLA) on circulating biomarkers and anaerobic performance and to verify whether alkalizing (ALK) or acidizing (ACI) diet would modulate these effects. The purpose of the study was to examine the acute effects of different dynamic exercise interventions on hamstring muscle performance. Thirty-six young men with poor hamstring flexibility were randomly assigned to three intervention groups: jogging combined with dynamic open kinetic chain stretching (DS), jogging combined with dynamic closed kinetic chain stretching (lunge with eccentric hamstring windmills, LEC), and jogging only (CON) groups. Hamstring flexibility, muscle stiffness (area under the curve, AUC), joint position sense (JPS), maximal eccentric strength (ECC), and angle of peak to

The effects of whole-body exposure to ambient temperatures of -15 degrees C and 23 degrees C on selected performance-related physiological variables were investigated in elite nonasthmatic cross-country skiers. At an ambient temperature of -15 degrees C we also studied the effects of the selective beta2-adrenergic agonist Salbutamol (0.4 mg x 3) which was administered 10 min before the exercise test. Eight male cross-country skiers with known maximal oxygen uptakes (VO2max) of more than 70 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) participated in the study. Oxygen uptake (VO2), heart rate (fc), blood lactate conc

BACKGROUND: Since no epidemiologic studies have been reported about musculoskeletal injuries in break-dancers, there are no data on the rates and patterns of musculoskeletal injuries in this population that clinicians can use to find ways to decrease injury rate.
HYPOTHESIS: We believe that the incidence of injuries in break-dancers is higher than assumed and that injury rates and patterns differ between professional and amateur dancers.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiologic study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of a total of 42 study subjects, 23 were professional dancers and 19 were amateur dan

In 1988 we retrained for exercise 800 coronary patients who had suffered a myocardial infarction or had benefited from revascularization surgery. Twenty per cent of these patients under anti-anginal treatment have silent myocardial ischaemia (SMI). Four per cent still have exercise-induced angina. The influence of SMI on the prognosis, frequently through an acute coronary accident or through the slow development of an ischaemic cardiomyopathy, has prompted us to determine a heart rate that should not be exceeded by coronary patients while practising sports. We learned by experience that corona

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of pathologies (obesity, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, hypertension) that affects over one quarter of old adults. MetS is a condition that markedly increases the susceptibility of various organs to dysfunctionality and is associated with the development of oxidative stress. The existing guidelines point out that exercise is highly advantageous for patients with MetS. However, there is a need for specific guidance and clinical evidence. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a moderate aerobic exercise program on older wo
