Sublethal doses of pyriproxyfen stimulate reproduction and aggressive behavior in a non-target parasitoid wasp.

Insecticides are commonly used to control populations of pests and disease vectors. However, they can have multiple unintended effects on non-target species. Assessing their impacts on the physiology and behavior of beneficial insects, such as biological control agents, is thus necessary to gain insight into the diversity and nature of such side effects. Here, we investigated the effect of sublethal doses of the endocrine disrupting insecticide pyriproxyfen, a juvenile hormone agonist, on females of the solitary ectoparasitoid Eupelmus vuilleti (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae). These parasitoid wasps

Enhanced insecticidal activity of Chilo iridescent virus expressing an insect specific neurotoxin.

Previously we have generated a recombinant Chilo iridescent virus (CIV) by inserting the green fluorescent protein gene (gfp) into the CIV 157L open reading frame (ORF) locus and showed that this recombinant (rCIV-Δ157L-gfp) was fully infectious both in cell culture as well as in insect larvae. This study opened up a new avenue for increasing the speed of kill of CIV and other iridoviruses by inserting virulence or toxin genes into the viral genome. In the current study we constructed a recombinant CIV (rCIV-Δ157L/gfp-AaIT) where the 157L ORF was replaced with both the AaIT neurotoxin gene fro

Tolerance to dietary linalool primarily involves co-expression of cytochrome P450s and cuticular proteins in Pagiophloeus tsushimanus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) larvae using SMRT sequencing and RNA-seq.

BACKGROUND: Pagiophloeus tsushimanus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), an emerging forest pest exclusively infesting camphor trees, has recently caused severe ecological and economic damage in localized areas in China. Its population outbreak depends largely on the capacity to overcome the pressure of terpenoid-derived metabolites (e.g. linalool) from camphor trees. At present, the molecular basis of physiological adaptation of P. tsushimanus to dietary linalool is poorly understood, and there is no available reference genome or transcriptome. RESULTS: Herein, we constructed the transcriptome prof

Molecular diagnosis of a previously unreported predator-prey association in coffee: Karnyothrips flavipes Jones (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) predation on the coffee berry borer.

The coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei, is the most important pest of coffee throughout the world, causing losses estimated at US $500 million/year. The thrips Karnyothrips flavipes was observed for the first time feeding on immature stages of H. hampei in April 2008 from samples collected in the Kisii area of Western Kenya. Since the trophic interactions between H. hampei and K. flavipes are carried out entirely within the coffee berry, and because thrips feed by liquid ingestion, we used molecular gut-content analysis to confirm the potential role of K. flavipes as a predator of H. hamp

Responses of Dendroctonus brevicomis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in behavioral assays: implications to development of a semiochemical-based tool for tree protection.

Currently, techniques for managing western pine beetle, Dendroctonus brevicomis LeConte (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae), infestations are limited to tree removals (thinning) that reduce stand density and presumably host susceptibility, and/or the use of insecticides to protect individual trees. There continues to be significant interest in developing an effective semiochemical-based tool for protecting trees from D. brevicomis attack, largely as an alternative to conventional insecticides. The responses of D. brevicomis to tree volatiles and verbenone were documented in eight experimen

Antifungal activity of avocado rhizobacteria against Fusarium euwallaceae and Graphium spp., associated with Euwallacea spp. nr. fornicatus, and Phytophthora cinnamomi.

Plant rhizobacteria have been successfully used as biocontrol agents against fungal phytopathogens. However, their potential to control two important avocado diseases, namely Fusarium dieback (FD) and Phytophthora root rot (PRR), has been poorly studied. FD is an emerging disease triggered by fungi associated with two ambrosia beetle species (Euwallacea fornicatus species complex), while PRR is caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi, a soil-borne oomycete. In the present work, the antifungal activity of bacteria isolated from avocado rhizosphere was tested in dual culture assays against Fusarium euw

Multigene phylogenies and morphological characterization of five new Ophiostoma spp. associated with spruce-infesting bark beetles in China.

Ophiostoma spp. (Ophiostomatales, Ascomycota) are well-known fungi associated with bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytinae). Some of these are serious tree pathogens, while the majority is blue-stain agents of timber. In recent years, various bark beetle species have been attacking spruce forests in Qinghai province, China, causing significant damage. A preliminary survey was done to explore the diversity of the ophiostomatoid fungal associates of these beetles. The aims of the present study were to identify and characterize new Ophiostoma spp. associated with spruce-infesting bark beetles in Qin

Cosmopolites sordidus G. as a dispersal agent of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical Race 4 (Foc TR4) in Cavendish banana crops (Musa AAA).

Cosmopolites sordidus Germar is the most limiting insect pest in the production of musaceous crops. The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between the population density of C. sordidus and the incidence of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical Race 4 (Foc TR4) in Cavendish banana plantations with high, medium, and low disease incidence in La Guajira, Colombia. The farm's weekly phytosanitary records from 2022 to 2023 defined the incidence levels as follows: high (>80 foci), medium (>30-80 foci), and low (<30 foci). For each incidence level, we installed ten ramp-type

Pest categorisation of Anthonomus quadrigibbus.

The Panel on Plant Health performed a pest categorisation of the weevil Anthonomus quadrigibbus Say, (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), for the EU. A. quadrigibbus is a well-defined and distinguishable species, recognised as an occasional pest of apples, pears and sour cherries in North America where it also feeds on a range of wild rosaceous plants such as Crataegus and Amelanchier. Adults feed on leaves, flowers and fruit. Feeding damage to fruit reduces quality. Females oviposit into young fruit, causing surface blemishes and resulting in distortion as the fruit develops. Marketability is subsequ

Analysis of Peptide Ligand Specificity of Different Insect Adipokinetic Hormone Receptors.

Adipokinetic hormone (AKH) is a highly researched insect neuropeptide that induces the mobilization of carbohydrates and lipids from the fat body at times of high physical activity, such as flight and locomotion. As a naturally occurring ligand, AKH has undergone quite a number of amino acid changes throughout evolution, and in some insect species multiple AKHs are present. AKH acts by binding to a rhodopsin-like G protein-coupled receptor, which is related to the vertebrate gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptors. In the current study, we have cloned AKH receptors (AKHRs) from seven differen

Contact Toxicity, Grain-Protective Efficacy, and Behavioral Effects of Methyl Benzoate and Acetophenone Against Four Major Stored-Product Insect Pests.

Although the fumigant activity of the naturally occurring compounds methyl benzoate and its analogues has been extensively evaluated against stored-product insect pests, their contact toxicity when applied as residual surface sprays and grain protectants, as well as their repellent effects, remains poorly studied. The current study evaluated the contact toxicity of methyl benzoate (MB) and a related natural product, acetophenone (AP), on glass surfaces and on wheat grains, along with their repellent activity, against adults of the lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica, the red flour beetle,

Cascading effects of early-season herbivory on late-season herbivores and their parasitoids.

There is an increasing awareness that herbivory by one insect species induces changes in a plant that affect the performance of other herbivore species that feed on the same plant. However, previous studies of interspecies interactions mediated by plant defense responses have rarely taken into account different insect guilds or the third trophic level. Using a combination of field and laboratory experiments, we examined how early-season herbivory in lima bean plants (Phaseolus lunatus) by the leaf-chewing herbivore Cerotoma ruficornis and the bean pod weevil Apion godmani affects the abundance

Partitioning of etofenprox under simulated California rice-growing conditions.

BACKGROUND: The pyrethroid insecticide etofenprox is of current interest to rice farmers in the Sacramento Valley owing to its effectiveness against the rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel. This study aimed to describe the partitioning of etofenprox under simulated rice field conditions by determining its Henry's law constant (H) (an estimate of volatilization) and organic carbon-normalized soil-water distribution coefficient (K(oc)) at representative field temperatures. A comparison of etofenprox and lambda-cyhalothrin is presented using a level-1 fugacity model. RESULTS: Ex

The Ophiostoma clavatum species complex: a newly defined group in the Ophiostomatales including three novel taxa.

Two species of blue-stain fungi with similar morphologies, Ophiostoma brunneo-ciliatum and Ophiostoma clavatum, are associates of bark beetles infesting Pinus spp. in Europe. This has raised questions whether they represent distinct taxa. Absence of herbarium specimens and contaminated or mistakenly identified cultures of O. brunneo-ciliatum and O. clavatum have accentuated the uncertainty regarding their correct identification. The aim of this study was to reconsider the identity of European isolates reported as O. brunneo-ciliatum and O. clavatum by applying DNA-based identification methods,

Unmasking Hidden Seed Resistance to Storage Pests: Testing Antibiosis and Antixenosis.

Postharvest seed losses caused by stored-product insect pests can reach 90%, depending on the commodity, country, and storage technology, resulting in considerable economic losses and threats to food safety and security. Breeding genotypes (varieties, hybrids, landraces, inbred lines, etc.) resistant to insect pests is among the most effective pest management methods, although it has not yet been explored in detail or used to control stored-product pests. To help breeders develop resistant genotypes, it is a prerequisite to identify inherently resistant lines, identify seed defense traits, and

Four new Ophiostoma species associated with conifer- and hardwood-infesting bark and ambrosia beetles from the Czech Republic and Poland.

Fungi under the order Ophiostomatales (Ascomycota) are known to associate with various species of bark beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae). In addition this group of fungi contains many taxa that can impart blue-stain on sapwood and some are important tree pathogens. A recent survey that focussed on the diversity of the Ophiostomatales in the forest ecosystems of the Czech Republic and Poland uncovered four putative new species. Phylogenetic analyses of four gene regions (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region, ß-tubulin, calmodulin, and translation elongation factor 1-α) indicated that these four

Visuospatial processing and fine motor function among 7-years old Guadeloupe children pre- and postnatally exposed to the organochlorine pesticide chlordecone.

BACKGROUND: Chlordecone is an organochlorine that was largely used as an insecticide to control a species of root borers, the Banana weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus), in the French West Indies, Guadeloupe and Martinique. Its molecules have been shown to be very persistent in the environment as pollution in soils leading to contamination of water sources and foodstuff will last for several decades. Our team previously reported associations between prenatal chlordecone exposure and poorer fine motor development at two points in time during infancy. OBJECTIVE: To document whether effects of prenat
