Exploring phytomedicine in space medicine: Addressing health challenges in microgravity.

BACKGROUND: Space exploration introduces unique health challenges for astronauts, including musculoskeletal degradation, immune dysregulation, oxidative stress, and cardiovascular alterations, primarily due to microgravity and space radiation. Conventional solutions like synthetic drugs face limitations such as side effects and storage constraints during long missions. Phytomedicine, derived from plant bioactive compounds, offers a promising alternative to address these challenges through multitargeted therapeutic actions. However, most evidence on these plant-based interventions comes from te

Exploring erythropoiesis: aging through the lens of malaria and microgravity.

Erythropoiesis, the production of red blood cells (RBCs), is a tightly regulated process essential for hematologic health. This system significantly shifts during aging, impacting RBC production and function. In this review, we examine erythropoiesis stages and highlight major age-related changes in stem cells, transcription factors, and key regulators such as erythropoietin and iron. We then explore mechanisms driving the high prevalence of anemia in the elderly - chronic disease, sepsis, and unexplained anemia - while discussing current therapies and gaps in management. Finally, we introduce

Pulmonary Function in Human Spaceflight.

Human spaceflight is entering a time of markedly increased activity fueled by collaboration between governmental and private industry entities. This has resulted in successful mission planning for destinations in low Earth orbit, lunar destinations (Artemis program, Gateway station) as well as exploration to Mars. The planned construction of additional commercial space stations will ensure continued low Earth orbit presence and destinations for science but also commercial spaceflight participants. The human in the journey to space is exposed to numerous environmental challenges including incre

Microgravity and Lymphatics: Why Space Programs Need Lymphedema Physiology Specialists.

Background: The resurgence of space travel in the recent years, both through formally trained astronauts on the International Space Station and the civilian space race to send astrocivilians to Low Earth Orbit and beyond, beckons the need to understand the role of the lymphatic system and role of endothelial glycocalyx when subjected to gravitational alterations. Methods and Results: A comprehensive narrative review of the literature explores a call to action for research and countermeasure development to support the health and well-being of humans subjected to space flight, with particular at

Melatonin ameliorates simulated-microgravity-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and lipid metabolism dysregulation in hepatocytes.

The liver is an essential multifunctional organ, which constantly communicates with nearly all tissues. It has raised the concern that microgravity exposure can lead to liver dysfunction and metabolic syndromes. However, molecular mechanisms and intervention measures of the adverse effects of microgravity on hepatocytes are limited. In this study, we utilized the random positioning machine culture system to investigate the adverse effects on hepatocytes under simulated microgravity (SMG). Our results showed that SMG impaired hepatocyte viability, causing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Compar

Plants in Microgravity: Molecular and Technological Perspectives.

Plants are vital components of our ecosystem for a balanced life here on Earth, as a source of both food and oxygen for survival. Recent space exploration has extended the field of plant biology, allowing for future studies on life support farming on distant planets. This exploration will utilize life support technologies for long-term human space flights and settlements. Such longer space missions will depend on the supply of clean air, food, and proper waste management. The ubiquitous force of gravity is known to impact plant growth and development. Despite this, we still have limited knowle

Oh G: The x, y and z of human physiological responses to acceleration.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the topic of this review? This review focuses on the main physiological challenges associated with exposure to acceleration in the Gx, Gy and Gz directions and to microgravity. What advances does it highlight? Our current understanding of the physiology of these environments and latest strategies to protect against them are discussed in light of the limited knowledge we have in some of these areas. ABSTRACT: The desire to go higher, faster and further has taken us to environments where the accelerations placed on our bodies far exceed or are much lower than that attribut

ESA VIVALDI Dry Immersion Microgravity Simulations Induce Increases in Immune Biomarkers Associated With Physical and Psychological Stress, and Sex-Specific Factors.

With future manned space projects involving missions of unprecedented duration, multisystem deconditioning induced by spaceflight could seriously affect the well-being and health of astronauts. Safe and easily determined in-flight biomarkers are therefore needed to monitor health status. In this study, we simulated space deconditioning with a 5-day dry immersion (DI) of 18 healthy women and 19 healthy men and evaluated the effects of this protocol on three biomarkers: the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the granulocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (GLR) and the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR).

Aerosol deposition in the human lung in reduced gravity.

The deposition of aerosol in the human lung occurs mainly through a combination of inertial impaction, gravitational sedimentation, and diffusion. For 0.5- to 5-μm-diameter particles and resting breathing conditions, the primary mechanism of deposition in the intrathoracic airways is sedimentation, and therefore the fate of these particles is markedly affected by gravity. Studies of aerosol deposition in altered gravity have mostly been performed in humans during parabolic flights in both microgravity (μG) and hypergravity (~1.6G), where both total deposition during continuous aerosol mouth br

Cardiovascular deconditioning in microgravity: some possible countermeasures.

Microgravity is an extreme environment inducing relevant adaptive changes in the human body, especially after prolonged periods of exposure. Since the early sixties, numerous studies on the effects of microgravity, during manned Space flights, have produced an increasing amount of information concerning its physiological effects, globally defined "deconditioning". Microgravity deconditioning of the cardiovascular system (CVD) is briefly reviewed. It consists of: (1) a decrease of circulating blood and interstitial fluid volumes, (2) a decrease of arterial blood diastolic pressure, (3) a decrea

Possible Mechanisms of Axonal Transport Disturbances in Mouse Spinal Motoneurons Induced by Hypogravity.

The data obtained by transcriptome analysis of lumbar spinal cord segments, sciatic nerve, and the respiratory diaphragm of the mice performed after a space flight on board Bion-M1 biosatellite were processed by bioinformatic methods aimed at elucidation of the regularities in hypogravity-induced transcriptome changes in various compartments of motor neurons. The study revealed abnormalities of axonal transport in spinal motor neurons provoked by weightlessness. These data agree with the results of electron microscopy examination of the spinal cord in experimental animals. In space group mice

Space flight rehabilitation.

The weightless environment of space imposes specific physiologic adaptations on healthy astronauts. On return to Earth, these adaptations manifest as physical impairments that necessitate a period of rehabilitation. Physiologic changes result from unloading in microgravity and highly correlate with those seen in relatively immobile terrestrial patient populations such as spinal cord, geriatric, or deconditioned bed-rest patients. Major postflight impairments requiring rehabilitation intervention include orthostatic intolerance, bone demineralization, muscular atrophy, and neurovestibular sympt

Successful transfer of adaptation acquired in a slow rotation room to motion environments in Navy flight training.

Two flight students, grounded for the reason they were highly susceptible to motion sickness, completed their training after gradually adapting to 10 rpm, achieved by executing head movements during small stepwise increases in angular velocity. Subject 1 executed a total of about 77 000 head movements with a period of 5 months and Subject 2 executed about 108 000 head movements within a period of 42 days. The transfer of adaptation acquired in the laboratory to most motion environments aloft was good; the notable exception involved weightless maneuvers in the case of Subject 1. Both were on fl

A direct approach to the study of the effect of gravity on axis formation in birds.

A system has been developed to enable the normal development of aborted very early uterine avian embryos, outside the female's uterus. The shell-less aborted egg was put into a foster shell of a sister egg, previously laid by the same female. The empty space between the shell and aborted egg was filled with artificial uterine fluid. The reconstructed eggs were incubated at 42 degrees C for 30 hours in a vertical position. The atmosphere contained a high concentration of CO2 (8-10%). At the termination of the 30 h the eggs were transferred to incubation at 37 degrees C in normal atmospheric con

Artificial gravity in Space: vestibular tolerance assessed by human centrifuge spinning on Earth.

Artificial gravity created by the astronauts themselves, without any external power supply, by pedalling on coupled counterrotating bicycles along the inner wall of the space module (Twin Bikes System, TBS), was previously suggested (Antonutto et al., 1991) to prevent musculo-skeletal decay and cardiovascular deconditioning during long term space flights. To investigate whether this unusual rotating environment would determine abnormal stimulations of the vestibular system due to Coriolis cross coupled accelerations, thus leading to acute motion sickness (AMS), the conditions of a rotating env

Influence of suspension on the expression of protective immunological memory to murine Listeria monocytogenes infection.

Female BDF1 mice were immunized with virulent Listeria monocytogenes, which resulted in the generation of a long-lived state of protective immunological memory for this facultative intracellular bacterial pathogen. The influence of antiorthostatic suspension, a ground-based model employed to simulate certain aspects of weightlessness that occur during spaceflight, on the capacity of these mice to express memory immunity was evaluated. Memory-immune mice were suspended by the tail in the orthostatic or antiorthostatic position and were reinfected with a lethal dose of virulent L. monocytogenes.

Exercise and skeletal health.

Involutional osteopenia contributes to older persons' susceptibility to fractures of the hip, spine and wrist. Experimental evidence is reviewed that supports the hypothesis that involutional bone loss can be prevented by physical exercise. Weightlessness and immobilization result in accelerated bone loss. In cross-sectional studies measuring total body potassium (TBK), both muscle mass and bone mass in normal humans have remained strikingly constant. The usual decrease in total body calcium (TBCa) and TBK with increasing age was not observed in a cross-sectional study of marathon runners. Loc

Space motion sickness: A common neurovestibular dysfunction in microgravity.

This article presents a review of the current findings related to neurovestibular physiology, aetiology, and proposed theories on space motion sickness (SMS) during acute and sustained exposure to microgravity. The review discusses the available treatment options including medication and nonpharmacological countermeasure methods that help to prevent the development of SMS in weightlessness. Ground-based simulations using virtual reality, flight simulations, and Barany's chairs can be applied to study SMS and demonstrate its signs and symptoms to space crew members. [The contribution of muscle progenitor cells to maintaining morphological characteristics of unweighted rat soleus muscle during passive stretch].

Skeletal muscle work hypertrophy is usually connected with muscle progenitor SC (satellite cells) activation with subsequent incorporation their nuclei into myofibers. Passive stretch of unloaded muscle was earlier established to prevent atrophic processes and be accompanied by enhanced protein synthesis. We hypothesized that elimination of SC proliferation capacity by gamma-irradiation would partly preavent stretched muscle fiber capability to maintain their size under condition of gravitational unloading. To assess the role of muscle progenitor (satellite) cells in development of passive str
