The role of borderline personality disorder symptoms on absenteeism & work performance in the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA).

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD) were previously found to be associated with decreased work performance, even after controlling for depressive and anxiety disorders. Furthermore, co-occurrence of BPD and affective disorders is common. Therefore, we examined the effect of BPD symptoms on occupational functioning in workers with affective disorders. METHODS: Healthy workers (n = 287), workers with current depression/anxiety only (n = 195), workers with BPD symptoms only (n = 54), and workers with both depression/anxiety and BPD symptoms (n = 103) were selected from

First Trimester DEX Treatment Is Not Associated with Altered Brain Activity During Working Memory Performance in Adults.

CONTEXT: Prenatal dexamethasone (DEX) treatment is sometimes used in pregnancies at risk for congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) to prevent virilization in female fetuses with CAH. In boys and in fetuses not having CAH, there is no benefit of early DEX treatment and the risks of this therapy must be thoroughly investigated. High doses of prenatal glucocorticoid might alter the developmental trajectory of the brain into adulthood, even for CAH unaffected subjects treated with DEX for a short term during the first trimester. OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated brain activation during wor

Reasoning bias, working memory performance and a transdiagnostic phenotype of affective disturbances and psychotic experiences in the general population.

BACKGROUND: The jumping to conclusions (JTC) reasoning bias and decreased working memory performance (WMP) are associated with psychosis, but associations with affective disturbances (i.e. depression, anxiety, mania) remain inconclusive. Recent findings also suggest a transdiagnostic phenotype of co-occurring affective disturbances and psychotic experiences (PEs). This study investigated whether JTC bias and decreased WMP are associated with co-occurring affective disturbances and PEs. METHODS: Data were derived from the second Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study (NEMESIS-2).

The importance of encoding-related neural dynamics in the prediction of inter-individual differences in verbal working memory performance.

Studies of brain-behaviour interactions in the field of working memory (WM) have associated WM success with activation of a fronto-parietal network during the maintenance stage, and this mainly for visuo-spatial WM. Using an inter-individual differences approach, we demonstrate here the equal importance of neural dynamics during the encoding stage, and this in the context of verbal WM tasks which are characterized by encoding phases of long duration and sustained attentional demands. Participants encoded and maintained 5-word lists, half of them containing an unexpected word intended to distur

Expectation-driven changes in cortical functional connectivity influence working memory and long-term memory performance.

Expectations generated by predictive cues increase the efficiency of perceptual processing for complex stimuli (e.g., faces, scenes); however, the impact this has on working memory (WM) and long-term memory (LTM) has not yet been investigated. Here, healthy young adults performed delayed-recognition tasks that differed only in stimulus category expectations, while behavioral and functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected. Univariate and functional-connectivity analyses were used to examine expectation-driven, prestimulus neural modulation, networks that regulate this modulation,

Functional brain network abnormalities during verbal working memory performance in adolescents and young adults with dyslexia.

Behavioral and functional neuroimaging studies indicate deficits in verbal working memory (WM) and frontoparietal dysfunction in individuals with dyslexia. Additionally, structural brain abnormalities in dyslexics suggest a dysconnectivity of brain regions associated with phonological processing. However, little is known about the functional neuroanatomy underlying cognitive dysfunction in dyslexia. In this study, functional magnetic resonance imaging and multivariate analytic techniques were used to investigate patterns of functional connectivity during a verbal WM task in individuals with dy

Resting-state functional connections with the hippocampus and with the caudate nucleus predict working memory performance in multiple sclerosis.

Working memory (WM) dysfunction is common in multiple sclerosis (MS). WM deficits also contribute to episodic memory (EM) dysfunction, a prevalent and disabling cognitive symptom of the disease. Functional connectivity between the hippocampus and caudate nucleus supports EM, but its specific influences on WM in MS are unknown. Resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) can identify spontaneous, baseline connectivity patterns that predict cognitive impairment, thus offering clinical utility. The present study examined whether hippocampal and caudate RSFC could predict WM performance in people

Does Daytime Sleepiness Moderate the Relationship Between Working Memory and Academic Performance in Schoolchildren? A Pilot Study.

Academic performance in adolescence is influenced by both cognitive capacity and physiological factors such as sleepiness. However, the interaction between these dimensions remains understudied. This pilot study examined whether daytime sleepiness moderates the relationship between working memory and academic achievement in a sample of 601 schoolchildren aged 11 to 17 years. Participants completed a digital visuospatial working memory task and self-reported their daytime sleepiness using the Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale (PDSS). Academic performance was assessed through official grades in

Aberrant effective connectivity during working memory performance in schizotypal personality disorder and schizophrenia: A spectrum approach.

Working memory (WM) deficits play a prominent role in schizophrenia and have been linked to aberrant frontal-parietal functional connectivity. Schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) is a schizophrenia-spectrum disorder that is biologically related to schizophrenia, but with less marked WM impairment. Comparing network dynamics during WM performance among individuals with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders could enhance our understanding of risk and resilience factors on a spectrum of illness severity. We used dynamic causal modeling (DCM) to identify changes in effective connectivity among the l

The use of lumbar spine imaging to determine fitness for work in asymptomatic workers who perform manual lifting.

In occupational medicine, evidence-based practices are essential for assessing the accuracy, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness of any technologies used in health programs. This opinion article reflects on the use of imaging tests to screen for workers at risk of low back pain disability and to recommend avoiding tasks that involve high biomechanical risk. The limitations of such testing are discussed through basic epidemiological concepts and evidence collected from systematic reviews.

The role of domain-general attention and domain-specific processing in working memory in algebraic performance: An experimental approach.

We investigated the role of working memory in symbolic and spatial algebra and related tasks across five experiments. Each experiment combined a processing task (expression evaluation, arithmetic, coordinate plane, geometry, or mental rotation) with verbal and spatial memory loads in a dual-task design. Spatial memory was compromised in the presence of more difficult processing tasks, and verbal memory was only compromised in the presence of algebraic tasks. The latter was related to the demands of retaining quantities associated with variables in verbal memory. We suggest that both verbal and

Working memory is a core executive function supporting dual-task locomotor performance across childhood and adolescence.

Most daily-life ambulatory tasks involve dual tasking, for example, talking while walking. In children, the evidence supporting the effects of age on dual tasking is confounded by the difficulty of the cognitive task and lack of adjustment to suit individual cognitive abilities. To address this issue, the current study examined the effects of age, cognitive load, and executive functioning on the degree of dual-task gait interference across childhood and adolescence. We tested 120 typically developing children aged 6-11 years, adolescents aged 12-16 years, and young adults aged 18-25 years. Par

A single night of sleep loss impairs objective but not subjective working memory performance in a sex-dependent manner.

Acute sleep deprivation can lead to judgement errors and thereby increases the risk of accidents, possibly due to an impaired working memory. However, whether the adverse effects of acute sleep loss on working memory are modulated by auditory distraction in women and men are not known. Additionally, it is unknown whether sleep loss alters the way in which men and women perceive their working memory performance. Thus, 24 young adults (12 women using oral contraceptives at the time of investigation) participated in two experimental conditions: nocturnal sleep (scheduled between 22:30 and 06:30 h

Motivating health workers up to a limit: partial effects of performance-based financing on working environments in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: In 2012, the Nigerian government launched performance-based financing (PBF) in three districts providing financial incentives to health workers based on the quantity and quality of service provision. They were given autonomy to use funds for operational costs and performance bonuses. This study aims to understand changes in perceived motivation among health workers with the introduction of PBF in Wamba district, Nigeria. METHODS: The study used a qualitative research design to compare perceptions of health workers in facilities receiving PBF payments in the pilot district of Wamba

Neuroanatomical correlates of behavioral rating versus performance measures of working memory in typically developing children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The frequent lack of correspondence between performance and observational measures of executive functioning, including working memory, has raised questions about the validity of the observational measures. This study was conducted to investigate sources of this discrepancy through correlation of volumetric and cortical thickness (CT) neuroimaging values with performance and questionnaire measures of working memory (WM). METHODS: Using longitudinal data from the NIH MRI Study of Normal Brain Development (Volumes, N= 347, 54.3% female; CT, N= 350, 54.6% female; age range: 6 to 16.9 y

The brain-derived neurotrophic factor Val66Met polymorphism moderates an effect of physical activity on working memory performance.

Physical activity enhances cognitive performance, yet individual variability in its effectiveness limits its widespread therapeutic application. Genetic differences might be one source of this variation. For example, carriers of the methionine-specifying (Met) allele of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) Val66Met polymorphism have reduced secretion of BDNF and poorer memory, yet physical activity increases BDNF levels. To determine whether the BDNF polymorphism moderated an association of physical activity with cognitive functioning among 1,032 midlife volunteers (mean age = 44.59 ye

Multicriteria decision model for ranking the performance of remote work activities: Case study in a call center company in Brazil.

Background: The world has rapidly experienced a shift in the work environment due to a global need brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and the recognition of the advantages that remote work presents for companies engaged in processes and customer service. However, not all employees exhibit the same level of adaptation and performance while carrying out their tasks outside the organization's premises. In this scenario, multicriteria decision analysis emerges as a tool to support the decision-making process in prioritizing employees with the best profile for carrying out telecommuting activit
