A New Shoulder Orthosis to Dynamically Support Glenohumeral Subluxation.

OBJECTIVE: In this paper we presented a novel shoulder subluxation support that aims to reduce the stress on the passive structures around the shoulder of patients with glenohumeral subluxation and glenohumeral-related shoulder pain. The device applies a force to the upper arm without impeding the functional range of motion of the arm. Our design contains a mechanism that statically balances the arm with two elastic bands. METHODS: A technical evaluation study was conducted to assess the performance of the orthosis. Additionally, two patients evaluated the orthosis. RESULTS: The results of t

Association between maximal lower leg strength and static and dynamic balance as well as gait velocity in older adults.

PURPOSE: Falls cause serious injuries with partially long immobilization time and decreased quality of life in older adults. The risk factors comprise instability in gait and balance, which were moderately correlated with the strength capacity. While the literature focused on upper-limb strength, in this work, we sought to evaluate the relationship between maximal plantar flexion and dorsiflexion strength and walking and balance parameters in older adults. METHODS: A total of 51 healthy and active participants (age: 78.5 ± 5.8 years) participated in the study. Lower-leg maximal strength was d

Using an oral history approach to understand perspectives of intergenerational trauma in African American women.

This brief report explores how African American women describe the intergenerational transmission of trauma and its perceived influence on stress and cardiometabolic health. Using an Oral History approach, semi-structured interviews were analyzed from participants in the parent HARMONY study. Analytic themes spanned work-life imbalance, medical racism, hypervigilance, reproductive autonomy, and physical safety. Women described balancing "controlled emotions" and "controlled actions" to navigate relationships and maintain bodily control. Although findings are preliminary and non-generalizable,

[Duration of antidepressive treatment. Recurrences and their prevention].

The basic strategy for the pharmacological treatment of depression, with special regard to its continuance following the start of remission, is outlined. The problem of the prevention of recurrences of dysthymic symptomatology is discussed and emphasis laid on the importance of lithium about whose use a fair literature is already available. The results obtained to date demonstrate the undoubted advantages of lithium salts (particularly of carbonate) in the maintenance of good affective balance, above all in the case of those subjects in whom the frequency or gravity of dysthymia seriously hand

The Morcellation Debate: The History and the Science.

Intracorporeal electromechanical morcellation has been available for nearly 2 decades, and has allowed hundreds of thousands of women to undergo hysterectomy and myomectomy in a minimally invasive approach. Despite gains in postoperative pain, complications, quality of life, hospital stay, and return to work, it has recently come under attack. The risk of inadvertent morcellation of a uterine malignancy, and subsequent dissemination of occult cancer, must be balanced by the risks of increased numbers of laparotomies. Power morcellation should be available to appropriate surgical candidates.

Work-related well-being and primary headache disorders among Japanese nurses: a cross-sectional structural equation modeling study.

Acute care hospital nurses face occupational conditions linked to headache, including shift work and psychosocial stress, but pathways from work-related well-being (WRWB) to primary headache disorders remain uncharacterized in occupational settings. This cross-sectional study estimated the 1-year prevalence of primary headache disorders among 247 nurses from two acute care hospitals in Japan and examined whether WRWB is indirectly associated with headache outcomes via psychological health and sleep. Headache was classified according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders, 3r

Evaluating factors impacting early career physician-scientists' decisions to continue research careers in the United States of America.

BACKGROUND: Bridging the gap between laboratory discoveries and patient care relies heavily on the physician-scientist workforce, which has historically served as a cornerstone in advancing biomedical sciences. However, the past decade has witnessed a remarkable decline in the number of emerging physician-scientists, raising concerns about the future of this vital community. This study aimed to evaluate the current state of early career physician-scientists on a national scale and explore challenges that hinder its growth, thereby limiting potential scientific innovation and progress. Subaxial Subluxation (SAS) and Cervical Deformity in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis in Relation to Selected Sagittal Balance Parameters.

Introduction: Synovitis and damage to natural stabilizers of many axial and peripheral joints make patients with rheumatoid arthritis particularly susceptible to sagittal balance disorders of the axial skeleton. This may determine the high individual variability of cervical spine deformities as well as differences in the rate of development of disease symptoms in these patients, such as radiculopathy and myelopathy. Methods: In the scientific literature, in addition to systemic factors, more and more attention is paid to work on biomechanical factors in the development of cervical spine instab
