World Health Organization Multimodal Improvement Strategy for Hand Hygiene: A Stepped-Wedge Cluster Randomized Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Evidence on hand hygiene promotion in resource-limited settings remains sparse, and its generalizability and long-term sustainability are poorly understood. Previous studies have predominantly relied on single-center, short-duration, before-and-after interventional designs. OBJECTIVE: To assess the long-term impact of the World Health Organization (WHO) multimodal improvement strategy (MMIS) supported by locally manufactured alcohol-based handrub (ABHR) on hand hygiene performance across multiple health care facilities in Uganda. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This stepped-we

Comparison of Size Determination Using Fenton and World Health Organization Growth Charts in Term Infants.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that classification as small for gestational age (SGA), appropriate for gestational age (AGA), or large for gestational age (LGA) among term infants would systematically differ between Fenton and World Health Organization (WHO) and that these differences would impact clinical care regarding postnatal glucose screening. METHODS: All infants born over 3 years (1/1/2020-12/31/2022) between 37-0/7 and 41-6/7-weeks gestational age in one rural, one suburban, or one urban hospital affiliated with an academic medical system in central North Carolina were included.

Priority knowledge gaps for schistosomiasis research and development in the World Health Organization Africa Region.

Schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia, is a widespread neglected tropical disease (NTD) in Africa, with more significant research and development (R&D) challenges and gaps compared to other preventive chemotherapy NTDs (PC-NTDs) like onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, and trachoma. In response to this challenge, some global initiatives have advocated for bridging this gap, focusing on coordinated engagement with research donors. In this opinion article we highlight key R&D priorities for combating schistosomiasis in the WHO Africa region. These include defining morbidity indicators, expa

Unveiling Sex Differences in Pediatric Burns Through the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Burn Registry.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric burns present a significant global health challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Despite this burden, few studies have explored global sex-based differences in pediatric burns. This study aims to describe pediatric burn incidence, burn care facilities' capacities, and burn outcomes with a focus on sex, comparing LMICs to HICs. METHODS: This study utilizes the World Health Organization's (WHO) Global Burn Registry (GBR) to analyze pediatric burn cases from 2018 to 2022, examining patient demographics, causes of burns, burn care facilities'

Update from the 2022 World Health Organization Classification of Thyroid Tumors: A Standardized Diagnostic Approach.

The fifth edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) histologic classification of thyroid neoplasms released in 2022 includes newly recognized tumor types, subtypes, and a grading system. Follicular cell-derived neoplasms are categorized into three families (classes): benign tumors, low-risk neoplasms, and malignant neoplasms. The terms "follicular nodular disease" and "differentiated high-grade thyroid carcinoma" are introduced to account for multifocal hyperplastic/neoplastic lesions and differentiated thyroid carcinomas with high-grade features, respectively. The term "Hürthle cells" is

Efficient Inactivation of Monkeypox Virus by World Health Organization‒Recommended Hand Rub Formulations and Alcohols.

Increasing nonzoonotic human monkeypox virus (MPXV) infections urge reevaluation of inactivation strategies. We demonstrate efficient inactivation of MPXV by 2 World Health Organization‒recommended alcohol-based hand rub solutions. When compared with other (re)emerging enveloped viruses, MPXV displayed the greatest stability. Our results support rigorous adherence to use of alcohol-based disinfectants.

World Health Organization type B2 thymoma with an abundance of Hassall's corpuscles: A case report.

Hassall's corpuscles (HCs) are characteristic components of the medulla of the mammalian thymus and thymoma with an abundance of HCs is even more rare, with only five cases having been reported in the literature, to the best of our knowledge. Furthermore, their morphology usually resembles World Health Organization (WHO) type B2 or B3 thymoma. The biological behavior appears indolent and is rarely associated with myasthenia gravis. However, whether it is a separate entity or a variant of organotypical thymoma WHO B2 or B3 remains to be elucidated. The present case report reports a type B2 thym

World Health Organization Methodology to Prioritize Emerging Infectious Diseases in Need of Research and Development.

The World Health Organization R&D Blueprint aims to accelerate the availability of medical technologies during epidemics by focusing on a list of prioritized emerging diseases for which medical countermeasures are insufficient or nonexistent. The prioritization process has 3 components: a Delphi process to narrow down a list of potential priority diseases, a multicriteria decision analysis to rank the short list of diseases, and a final Delphi round to arrive at a final list of 10 diseases. A group of international experts applied this process in January 2017, resulting in a list of 10 priorit

Efficacy and safety of World Health Organization group 5 drugs for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis treatment.

The efficacy and toxicity of several drugs now used to treat multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) have not been fully evaluated. We searched three databases for studies assessing efficacy in MDR-TB or safety during prolonged treatment of any mycobacterial infections, of drugs classified by the World Health Organization as having uncertain efficacy for MDR-TB (group 5). We included 83 out of 4002 studies identified. Evidence was inadequate for meropenem, imipenem and terizidone. For MDR-TB treatment, clarithromycin had no efficacy in two studies (risk difference (RD) -0.13, 95% CI -0.40-0.

World Health Organization Guidelines for Containment of Poliovirus Following Type-Specific Polio Eradication - Worldwide, 2015.

In 1988, the World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) resolved to eradicate polio worldwide. Among the three wild poliovirus (WPV) types (type 1, type 2, and type 3), WPV type 2 (WPV2) has been eliminated in the wild since 1999, and WPV type 3 (WPV3) has not been reported since 2012. In 2015, only Afghanistan and Pakistan have reported WPV transmission. On May 25, 2015, all WHO Member States endorsed World Health Assembly resolution 68.3 on full implementation of the Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan 2013-2018 (the Endgame Plan), and with it, the third Global Act

Predictors of recurrence in thymic tumors: importance of invasion, World Health Organization histology, and size.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to define predictors of recurrence after resection of thymic tumors. METHODS: A single-institution retrospective study was performed of 179 patients who underwent resection of a thymic tumor from 1972 through 2003. RESULTS: Resection was complete in 90% (161/179) of patients. After a median follow-up of 115 months, the recurrence rate was 11% (20/179), the tumor-related death rate was 7.8% (14/179), and the overall death rate was 36.3% (65/179). Tumor recurrence correlated with advanced stage and histology (P < .0001). The difference in recurrence between Masaoka

The new World Health Organization classification of lymphomas: the past, the present and the future.

The REAL Classification of lymphomas, proposed in 1994, represents a new paradigm in lymphoma classification, consisting of a list of biologic entities defined by clinicopathologic and immunogenetic features. The non-Hodgkin's lymphomas comprise precursor lymphoblastic and mature cell neoplasms of B, T or putative natural killer cell lineage. An individual entity can exhibit a range of morphologic appearances and a range of clinical behavior. The categories in Hodgkin's lymphomas are identical to the widely used Rye classification except for the additional of a new category termed 'lymphocyte-

Validation of World Health Organization Guidelines for cancer pain relief: a 10-year prospective study.

This paper reports on the experience gained using World Health Organization Guidelines for cancer pain relief over a 10-year period in an anaesthesiology-based pain service associated with a palliative care programme. The course of treatment of 2118 patients was assessed prospectively over a period of 140,478 treatment days. Non-opioid analgesics (WHO step I) were used on 11%, weak opioids (WHO step II) on 31% and strong opioids (WHO step III) on 49% of treatment days. Administration was via the enteral route on 82% and parenterally on 9% of treatment days. On the remaining days, either spinal
