A deficit in post-graphemic writing processes: Evidence for a graphomotor buffer.

Post-graphemic writing processes transform abstract letter representations into representations of writing movements. We describe an individual with an acquired post-graphemic writing deficit. NGN is normal in spelling words aloud, but impaired in writing words to dictation, with most errors involving letter substitutions (e.g., RUMOR written as BUMOR). NGN's deficit affects graphic motor plans, which specify the writing strokes for producing letters. Analyses of writing speed, fluency, and stroke patterns suggest that NGN's errors result from incomplete motor-plan activation. NGN's error rate

Why Children With Dyslexia Struggle With Writing and How to Help Them.

PURPOSE: Children with dyslexia often have related writing difficulties. In the simple view of writing model, high-quality writing depends on good transcription skills, working memory, and executive function-all of which can be difficult for children with dyslexia and result in poor spelling and low overall writing quality. In this article, we describe the challenges of children with dyslexia in terms of the simple view of writing and instructional strategies to increase spelling and overall writing quality in children with dyslexia. METHOD: For spelling strategies, we conducted systematic se

An Analysis of First-Grade Writing Profiles and Their Relationship to Compositional Quality.

To help all students meet the writing expectations of the Common Core State Standards, researchers need a deeper understanding of the characteristics of struggling writers. The purpose of this study was to explore the writing profiles of students including those who have or are at risk for writing disabilities. First-grade students ( N = 391) were assessed at the end of the school year using three writing assessments (spelling, sentence writing fluency, writing achievement). The researchers used latent profile analysis to identify students as fitting into one of five profiles (At Risk, Low Flu

Joining the diaspora of deaf memoirists: a personal account of writing deafness.

In this essay, the author describes how, and why, she tackled a lifetime of questions about her deafness and experiences of being deaf by writing a memoir called The Art of Being Deaf. While researching her memoir, the author discovered that the questions about her deafness that she most needed to answer were her own. Having first read many memoirs by other deaf writers and novels with deaf characters, the author set about composing her own narrative of deafness in a fresh way. She not only came to an improved understanding of her deaf self, but grew into a more authentic understanding of her

Executive functions for reading and writing in typical literacy development and dyslexia.

Experiment 1: Hierarchical linear modeling of growth trajectories of three executive functions (inhibition; rapid automatic switching, RAS; and combined inhibition/switching) in typical readers and writers showed steady improvement of inhibition but leveling of RAS and inhibition/switching about fourth grade. In multiple regressions, RAS, entered after inhibition, contributed uniquely to literacy outcomes at every grade. Improvement of executive functions over the first four grades predicted literacy outcomes at fourth grade. Experiment 2: For children with dyslexia, executive functions explai

Multiple patterns of writing disorders in dementia of the Alzheimer type and their evolution.

This paper reports the results obtained from a writing task given to 23 Italian patients suffering from mild to moderate dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT). Spelling performance was tested with a task that taps the sub-word-level (spelling of regular words and nonwords), and the lexical route (spelling of regular and irregular words), in line with contemporary models of writing. Each patient's performance was classified according to the emergence of dissociated patterns of damage between regular words and nonwords and between regular and irregular words. The 23 DAT patients span the whole

Who introduced typhoid vaccination: Almroth Write or Richard Pfeiffer?

The British pathologist Almroth Wright generally is credited with the initiation of typhoid vaccination in 1896. His claims of priority were challenged as early as 1907 in favor of Richard Pfeiffer, a German bacteriologist and a student of Robert Koch. A review of the original literature of the 1890s and the early 1900s revealed that several groups were working on typhoid vaccine at the same time and that the credit for the initiation of typhoid vaccine studies should be shared by these two great researchers.

Memoirs of amnesia: filial narratology of contemporary amnesiac writing in Taiwan.

Contemporary Taiwanese literature has witnessed an emergence of narratives addressing cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease, constituting a significant literary phenomenon that merits scholarly attention. These narratives often delve into intergenerational dynamics between ageing parents, whose stories are untold, and their adult children, who emerge as literary voices. Through the filial narratives of amnesia, writers reveal the relational nature of memory itself. Through theoretical frameworks of Asian gerontology and narrative medicine, this study examines how Taiwanese dementia narrati

Care Team Response to Patient Portal Message Content and Writing Style.

IMPORTANCE: Patient portal messages are an increasingly central channel for patient-clinician communication, but there are inequities in how responsive care teams are to messages sent by patients from historically marginalized groups. The reasons driving these disparities are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To quantify factors that could potentially explain lower rates of care team response to messages sent by patients from historically marginalized groups. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used natural language processing to systematically extract message content

Direct ink writing of tantalum: tailorable hierarchical porous scaffold for osteogenesis.

To mitigate the risk of osseointegration failure in bone defect reconstruction, innovative fabrication strategies for developing implants with optimal biocompatibility and enhanced osteogenic capacity are crucial. Hierarchical porous structures formed by the synergistic combination of macropores (∼300-600 μm) and micropores (smaller than 20 μm) can better mimic the structural characteristics of native bone, thereby promoting osteogenesis. In this study, we developed direct ink writing (DIW) technology to fabricate a graded porous tantalum scaffold designed to promote osteogenesis. In the DIW p

Artificial Intelligence in Medical Writing: Subtle Errors and Their Complex Consequences.

Although artificial intelligence (AI; such as ChatGPT) can improve manuscript readability, AI-related false descriptions (so-called hallucinations) and incorrect reference retrieval have been repeatedly reported. We tested (1) whether ChatGPT, when provided with medically correct inputs, generates a manuscript containing medically incorrect statements-particularly whether it misunderstands or overlooks "subtle but important" medical issues-and (2) whether ChatGPT cites inappropriate references. We input bullet points on placenta percreta, tasked ChatGPT-5 with generating a mini-review, and ask

Writing an Imagined Immunity: Sleep, Sleeplessness, and the Fight Against Infection.

Although modern commentators date systematic study of sleep and immunity to the late 1970s, both medical and popular writing from the late 19th and early 20th centuries reveal a much earlier awareness of the immunological effects of sleep and sleep deprivation. This article demonstrates how historical actors conceptualized sleep as integral to bodily defense, thereby revealing a key part of the immune imaginary. The authors map the development of conceptual and experimental linkages between sleep and biological immunity from the late 19th century to the 1920s across the Anglophone tradition, r

Can AI Tools Reliably and Effectively Detect Plagiarism in Scientific Writing?

Background and aim Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT (San Francisco, CA: OpenAI) and Bard (now Gemini) (Mountain View, CA: Google), is increasingly used in scientific writing. However, its rapid adoption has raised ethical concerns, especially regarding plagiarism. Current standards of plagiarism detection for scientific writing require a costly and laborious process, done by journal reviewers, sparking questions of whether free LLM tools could streamline the process. Further, AI-generated text can closely resemble genuine scientific writing,

Writing outcomes and expressive language use of deaf high school students.

This study explores the writing performance of deaf high school students, focusing on narrative, argumentative, and argumentative-with-sources genres, and examining the role of expressive language proficiency and early language exposure. Using a descriptive research design, the writing samples of 75 students were scored for idea development, organization, style, sentence fluency, word choice, and conventions using automated scoring. Results revealed a range of low to mid performance, with the argumentative-with-sources writing scoring similarly to narrative writing and showing incremental grow

Flexibly Reinforced Polycaprolactone Bioelectrodes for Piezoresistive Sensing via Direct Ink Writing.

Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) is a biodegradable polyester known for its low melting point and high flexibility, making it ideal for various medical device applications. In this study, we introduce a conductive nanocarbon black-blended PCL as a reinforced ink for fabricating flexible and degradable piezoresistive bioelectrodes. This approach enables the creation of a piezoresistive bioelectrode optimized for precise biomechanical sensing. The bioelectrode exhibits exceptional mechanoelectrical stability under high tension (> 350%), repeated drawing (> 40%, 100 cycles), long-term bending (> 7000 c
