PURPOSE: To examine whether unilateral multifidus damage could promote degeneration at the L5-6 facet joint (FJ) and compensatory changes in lumbo-pelvic muscles in rats.
METHODS: 12 facet clamp, 12 facet sham and 7 control rats were studied. Facet clamp and sham animals had the left L5-6 FJ exposed, and the clamp group had a mild compressive clamp applied using hemostatic forceps to model post-traumatic arthritis. Both groups then had the left multifidus detached from the L1-L6 spinous processes. Animals were euthanized 28 days post-surgery. Muscle mass and fascicle length were evaluated bil

Digital tomosynthesis (DTS) is a clinically available modality that allows imaging of a patient's spine in supine and standing positions. The purpose of this study was to establish the extent to which vertebral displacement and stiffness derived from DTS-based digital volume correlation (DTS-DVC) are correlated with those from a reference method, i.e., microcomputed tomography-based DVC (μCT-DVC). T11 vertebral bodies from 11 cadaveric donors were DTS imaged twice in a nonloaded state and once under a fixed load level approximating upper body weight. The same vertebrae were µCT imaged in nonlo

The development of the iliosacral joint (ISJ) in tetrapods represented a crucial step in the evolution of terrestrial locomotion. This structure is responsible for transferring forces between the vertebral column and appendicular skeleton, thus supporting the bodyweight on land. However, most research dealing with the water-to-land transition and biomechanical studies in general has focused exclusively on the articulation between the pelvic girdle and femur. Our knowledge about the contact between the pelvic girdle and vertebral column (i.e. the ISJ) at a tissue level is restricted so far to h

Micro-computed X-ray tomography (μCT) coupled with visualization techniques such as three-dimensional reconstruction of internal morphological structures has opened up new pathways for analyzing the anatomy of nervous systems in intact specimens. The possibility for combining μCT with other techniques is one of the major advantages of μCT scanning, and the technical development of higher resolutions in lab-based μCT-scanners allows for investigating the anatomy of specimens in the sub-milimeter range. The European shore crab Carcinus maenas features a larval development over four zoeal and one

Trabecular bone is a lightweight, compliant material organized as a web of struts and rods (trabeculae) that erode with age and the onset of bone diseases like osteoporosis, leading to increased fracture risk. The traditional diagnostic marker of osteoporosis, bone mineral density (BMD), has been shown in ex vivo experiments to correlate poorly with fracture resistance when considered on its own, while structural features in conjunction with BMD can explain more of the variation in trabecular bone strength. We develop a network-based model of trabecular bone by creating graphs from micro-compu

The Crocodyliformes are the most represented vertebrate clade in the Upper Cretaceous sequences of the Bauru Group, Paraná Basin. However, some of the species described have an uncertain taxonomic status and phylogenetic position. For instance, "Goniopholis" paulistanus has been assigned as a nomem dubium, due to its description being based on scarce material. The "G". paulistanus specimens (i.e. teeth and a left tibia) were discovered in two different localities in São Paulo state: Mirandópolis and Valparaíso municipalities; where the upper interval of the Adamantina Formation (Early Maastric

Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, silver carp, is an invasive Asian carp that has become increasingly widespread and ecologically destructive within the upper Mississippi River Basin. Its complex trophic anatomy may help explain the apparent efficiency with which they consume phytoplankton, outcompeting native filter feeders. This cypriniform species is characterized by trophic synapomorphies that include a palatal organ, loss of upper pharyngeal jaws, and a hypertrophied lower pharyngeal jaw. However, in silver carp these structures have become greatly modified and diverge from the more basal cond

In most mammals, auditory ossicles in the middle ear, including the malleus, incus and stapes, are the smallest bones. In mice, a bony structure called the auditory bulla houses the ossicles, whereas the auditory capsule encloses the inner ear, namely the cochlea and semicircular canals. Murine ossicles are essential for hearing and thus of great interest to researchers in the field of otolaryngology, but their metabolism, development, and evolution are highly relevant to other fields. Altered bone metabolism can affect hearing function in adult mice, and various gene-deficient mice show chang

The mammalian nasal fossa contains a set of delicate and often structurally complex bones called turbinals. Turbinals and associated mucosae function in regulating respiratory heat and water loss, increasing surface area for olfactory tissue, and directing airflow within the nasal fossa. We used high-resolution micro-CT scanning to investigate a unique maxilloturbinal morphology in 37 species from the bat family Rhinolophidae, which we compared with those of families Hipposideridae, Megadermatidae, and Pteropodidae. Rhinolophids exhibit numerous structural modifications along the nasopharyngea

INTRODUCTION: A major complication of haemophilia is haemophilic arthropathy (HA), a debilitating disorder with an incompletely defined pathobiology. High-resolution imaging may provide new knowledge about onset and progression of HA, and thereby support identification of new treatment opportunities. Recently, a F8-/- rat model of HA was developed. The size of the rat allows for convenient and high resolution imaging of the joints, which could enable in vivo studies of HA development.
AIM: To determine whether HA in the F8-/- rat can be visualized using ultrasonography (US) and micro-computed

BACKGROUND: Recent studies reported on the very complex morphology of the pulp system in equine cheek teeth. The continuous production of secondary dentine leads to distinct age-related changes of the endodontic cavity. Detailed anatomical knowledge of the dental cavities in all ages is required to explain the aetiopathology of typical equine endodontic diseases. Furthermore, data on mandibular and maxillary pulp systems is in high demand to provide a basis for the development of endodontic therapies. However, until now examination of the pulp cavity has been based on either sectioned teeth or

Pinealectomy was used to induce scoliosis in Broiler chickens, and the bone microarchitecture of the concave and convex sides in pinealectomized scoliosis chickens was assessed by microcomputed tomography (micro-CT). Few studies have assessed the vertebrae bone microarchitecture of the concave and convex sides in scoliosis although the curvature of the coronal plane is the main deformity in scoliosis. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are differences in the bone microarchitecture of the concave and convex sides in pinealectomized scoliosis chickens by the technique of mi

Microplastics (MPs) are recognized as a ubiquitous contaminant in terrestrial ecosystems. Earthworms, which play key roles in soil structure, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem function, are important bioindicators for assessing MP exposure and fate. However, uncertainties remain regarding MP toxicokinetics in earthworms, including ingestion dynamics, retention, and the potential for translocation across the gut epithelium. This study investigated the movement and fate of MPs in Eisenia fetida by quantifying uptake and elimination across five common MP morphologies (films, fibers, foams, fragment

The peripheral auditory system of dolphins comprises specialised bony, fatty, vascular, and neural structures adapted for underwater hearing and diving physiology. These include the external ear canal, acoustic fat bodies, sinuses, and associated neurovascular networks, which together support sound conduction, protection, and possibly sensory functions. Despite advances in gross anatomical description, the detailed integration of these tissues, particularly the innervation, neurovascular organisation, and their functional implications, remains poorly understood. Previous studies have described

Until recently, the absence of intrinsic extensor muscles in the distal leg joints of Myriapoda-a condition previously recognized in spiders-was known but scattered across various publications, lacking a consolidated overview. This has led to various hypotheses regarding the mechanisms underlying the extension of these so-called hinge joints. Hemolymph pressure has been proposed as a possible explanation, along with the pressing of the leg tip against the ground and the elasticity of the joints. The aim of this study is to investigate the morpho-functional background responsible for the extens

BACKGROUND: Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a prevalent developmental enamel defect that frequently affects permanent molars and is associated with increased dentin permeability, hypersensitivity, and a higher risk of pulpal inflammation. These clinical features may necessitate endodontic treatment at an early age; however, information regarding potential variations in root canal morphology in MIH-affected molars remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the root canal morphology of hypomineralized permanent molars and compare it with that of healthy molars via microcomputed t

INTRODUCTION: Enlarged parietal foramina (EPF) are rare, symmetric calvarial defects. Although typically benign, they are clinically significant due to possible associations with venous malformations and inherited genetic variants. However, the anatomical, radiological, and histological details of these entities are scant in the medical literature.
METHODS: Two hundred and fifty adult human skulls from multiple anatomical collections were examined for EPF. Gross morphometric data were supplemented by high-resolution microcomputed tomography (microCT) and histological analysis (H&E, PAS, and M

Engineered nanoparticles are increasingly used in industry and consumer products, raising concerns about their release and mobility in subsurface environments such as stratified aquifers. Understanding how physicochemical conditions and pore structure heterogeneity jointly govern nanoparticle transport is essential for predicting environmental fate and supporting risk assessment. This study aims to elucidate the transport and retention mechanisms of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdS NPs) in layered porous media, with emphasis on the roles of structural heterogeneity and hydrochemical conditio

Osteoporosis significantly challenges fracture healing, particularly in the regeneration of critical-size bone defects. It remains unclear whether osteoporotic woven bone weakness results from impaired intrinsic quality, reduced formation rate, or both, including its effect on the adjacent bone tissue. To address this question in a translational context, we employed an osteoporotic sheep model, widely recognized as one of the closest animal analogs to human bone biology and physiology. Using an ex vivo multimodal characterization, this study analyzed the woven tissue formed within the distract
