Yoga v. health education for attentional processes relevant to major depressive disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Research has shown that yoga may be an effective adjunctive treatment for persistent depression, the benefits of which may accumulate over time. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the following in a sample of persistently depressed individuals: whether yoga increases mindfulness and whether yoga attenuates rumination. Rumination and mindfulness both represent attentional processes relevant for onset and maintenance of depressive episodes. METHODS: One-hundred-ten individuals who were persistently depressed despite ongoing use of pharmacological treatment were recruited

DESIGN: We randomized adults with colorectal cancer to a brief Yoga Skills Training (YST) or an attention control (AC; empathic attention and recorded education). SETTING: The interventions and assessments were implemented ind

Effects of Yoga on Gene Expression: A Systematic Review of Randomised Controlled Trials.

Yoga, an integrative mind-body practice, is increasingly recognised for its ability to modulate gene expression, particularly that of genes associated with inflammation, stress, and aging. This systematic review, conducted per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, synthesises evidence from 11 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) from 2015 to 2024, involving over 700 adults. Studies were sourced from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library to evaluate the molecular effects and clinical implications of yoga. Across these RCTs,

Yoga as an Adjunctive Treatment for Chronic Low Back Pain: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Yoga has been recognized for its many mental and physical health benefits. A growing body of literature supports yoga's indication in chronic low back pain (CLBP) management. CLBP is a major public health concern, given its high rates of associated disabilities and large healthcare costs. A biopsychosocial approach has been deemed the most effective and appropriate management strategy for this condition. When alternative and comprehensive approaches for managing the complexity of CLBP are considered, yoga poses a safe, accessible adjunctive treatment option. OBJECTIVES: The goal o

Building the Case for Telehealth Yoga for Minors With Arthritis and Chronic Pain: A Perspective.

Childhood arthritis has a prevalence of around 300 000 US children. It has no cure, and is just one of many juvenile conditions associated with pain, fatigue, and a lifetime of medical care. Yoga has demonstrated effectiveness in improving symptoms and quality of life for adults with arthritis. Yoga can be easily adapted according to affected joints, movement limitations, and changes in disease status. It combines movement that is necessary for arthritis management and maintaining physical function, along with mental practices that help to address common psychosocial comorbidities such as depr

Mediators of improved PTSD symptoms in veterans and civilians following a yoga program.

OBJECTIVE: Although yoga shows some promise as an intervention for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), little is known about how yoga reduces PTSD symptoms. The current study hypothesised that aspects of interoceptive awareness would mediate the effect of a yoga intervention on PTSD symptoms. METHODS: We used data from our recently completed randomised controlled trial of a 16-week holistic yoga programme for veterans and civilians diagnosed with PTSD (n = 141) that offered weekly 90-minute sessions. We conducted a mediation analysis using interoceptive awareness and other variables that w

Adjuvant yoga therapy for symptom management of functional dyspepsia: A case series.

Functional Dyspepsia (FD), commonly called chronic indigestion, comes under the umbrella of 'Disorders of Gut-Brain Axis'. It manifests as a cluster of upper gastrointestinal symptoms including epigastric pain or burning, postprandial fullness and early satiety. Since the pathophysiology is complex, it is often difficult to effectively manage and significantly impacts the patient's quality of life. This case series aims to elucidate the role of Yoga as an adjuvant therapy to modern medicine in providing relief of dyspeptic symptoms in such patients. Yoga is an ancient Indian mind-body practise
