Leaves of the plant Boesenbergia rotunda are used by the Nicobarese tribe of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India, to prepare traditional medicine for treating fever, headache and body ache. In the present investigation, methanol fraction of these leaves were analysed by GC/MS that revealed the presence of 25 compounds. The anti-leptospiral activity of methanol crude extract was determined by both microdilution and macrodilution methods. The MICs of the extract were tested against 24 pathogenic leptospiral strains and ranged between 62.5-125 μg/mL in both microdilution and macrodilution. The ran

We investigated the antimicrobial efficacy of seven essential oils from four plant families-Lamiaceae, Asteraceae, Zingiberaceae, and Poaceae-against microbes associated with dandruff. The antimicrobial effectiveness of these essential oils was assessed using paper disk agar diffusion and broth micro-dilution techniques. The results demonstrated that two of the essential oils significantly inhibited the growth of dandruff-associated microorganisms, with inhibition zones ranging from 5 ± 1.81 mm to 29.4 ± 2.70 mm in diameter. Among the tested essential oils, Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii) exhi

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: This study documents the use of medicinal plants by Karens of Middle Andaman, of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. In spite of the availability of modern medicines, Karens preferred herbal remedies provided by the Traditional Knowledge Practitioners (TKPs), who served as their healers. Hence, the aim of this study was to collect information from TKPs and determine the significance of plants utilized for medicinal purposes. The informant consensus factor (ICF) in relation to medicinal plants used was also estimated and analysed.

This study evaluated the anxiolytic and memory-protective effects of withanolide D in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio). The compound was administered at doses of 4, 20, and 40 mg/kg and showed no signs of toxicity after 96 h of observation at any of the doses tested. In the open field test, withanolide D reduced locomotor activity, indicating a sedative-like effect. Nevertheless, in the light/dark test, doses of 20 and 40 mg/kg produced an anxiolytic-like response, suggesting that anxiolytic and motor effects may partially overlap depending on dose. The anxiolytic effect observed at the minimum e

Cancer has become a consistent concern globally and increasingly fatal. Malignant melanoma is a rising concern, with its increased mortality. Kaempferia parviflora Wall. ex Baker (K. parviflora (KP)), commonly known as black ginger, is well known for its medicinal contributions. For the first time, in the following study we investigated the antimelanoma potential of Laos KP extracts in human cell lines. KP extracts (KPE) in methanol, DCM, and ethyl acetate showed strong cell inhibition in both melanomas, with KPE-DCM being particularly effective in inhibiting melanoma cell migration, invasion,

Dai-kenchu-to (TJ-100) is an herbal medicine used to shorten the duration of intestinal transit by accelerating intestinal movement. However, intestinal movement in itself has not been evaluated in healthy volunteers using radiography, fluoroscopy, and radioisotopes because of exposure to ionizing radiation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of TJ-100 on intestinal motility using cinematic magnetic resonance imaging (cine MRI) with a steady-state free precession sequence. Ten healthy male volunteers received 5 g of either TJ-100 or lactose without disclosure of the identity

Gastric cardia cancer is a biologically heterogeneous malignancy arising at the gastroesophageal junction that is, the upper opening of the stomach rather than the heart. It develops along an inflammation-metaplasia-dysplasia-carcinoma sequence and remains clinically challenging because early lesions are often occult and advanced disease is shaped by a treatment-resistant tumor microenvironment. A clinically useful review therefore needs to distinguish gastric cardia cancer from non-cardia gastric cancer and from esophageal adenocarcinoma, while also clarifying where current evidence is direct

Xanthorrhizol is an active component isolated from Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb. (Zingiberaceae) that is traditionally used in Indonesia for medicinal purposes. In the present study, we found that the topical application of xanthorrhizol before 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) treatment significantly inhibits TPA-induced mouse ear edema and TPA-induced tumor promotion in 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)-initiated ICR mouse skin. The topical application of xanthorrhizol following the induction of papillomas with TPA-induced hyperplasia and dysplasia also reduced tumor multiplicity a

INTRODUCTION: Curcumae Rhizoma (Ezhu) and Curcumae Radix (Yujin) are both derived from Curcuma kwangsiensis (CK), an important species in the Zingiberaceae family. They have different clinical applications in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM): The rhizome is mainly used for antitumor treatments, whereas the radix is known for antidepressant and cholagogic effects, both officially listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. However, non-medicinal parts such as the aerial portions and fibrous roots are sometimes mixed in, leading to confusion in clinical formulation use.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed t
