Adaptations of Xenograpsus testudinatus to shallow hydrothermal vent environments in the western Pacific: A comprehensive review.

The grapsoid crab Xenograpsus testudinatus, Ng et al. (2000) inhabits unique ecosystems of active shallow-water hydrothermal vents of the western Pacific volcanic rises as the dominant vent metazoan. This species provides a valuable model to explore population expansion, evolutionary ecology, metabolic regulation, genetic adaptation, and meta-population dynamics. A comprehensive literature review revealed that X. testudinatus, a dominant vent metazoan, has evolved robust metabolic strategies driven by mechanisms of acid-base regulation, allowing it to preserve its eco-physiological balance und

First filter feeding in the Early Triassic: cranial morphological convergence between Hupehsuchus and baleen whales.

Modern baleen whales are unique as large-sized filter feeders, but their roles were replicated much earlier by diverse marine reptiles of the Mesozoic. Here, we investigate convergence in skull morphology between modern baleen whales and one of the earliest marine reptiles, the basal ichthyosauromorph Hupehsuchus nanchangensis, from the Early Triassic, a time of rapid recovery of life following profound mass extinction. Two new specimens reveal the skull morphology especially in dorsal view. The snout of Hupehsuchus is highly convergent with modern baleen whales, as shown in a morphometric ana

A peptide-binding domain shared with an Antarctic bacterium facilitates Vibrio cholerae human cell binding and intestinal colonization.

Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of the disease cholera, is responsible for multiple pandemics. V. cholerae binds to and colonizes the gastrointestinal tract within the human host, as well as various surfaces in the marine environment (e.g., zooplankton) during interepidemic periods. A large adhesin, the Flagellar Regulated Hemagglutinin A (FrhA), enhances binding to erythrocytes and epithelial cells and enhances intestinal colonization. We identified a peptide-binding domain (PBD) within FrhA that mediates hemagglutination, binding to epithelial cells, intestinal colonization, and facilit

Methylmercury Transport and Fate Shows Strong Seasonal and Spatial Variability along a High Arctic Freshwater Hydrologic Continuum.

The presence of toxic methylmercury (MeHg) in Arctic freshwater ecosystems and foodwebs is a potential health concern for northern Indigenous people. Addressing this issue requires a better understanding of MeHg production, fate during transport, and uptake into foodwebs. We used methylation assays and spatiotemporal surveys of MeHg concentrations, during the ice-covered and open water seasons, across a hydrologic continuum (composed of thaw seeps, lake/ponds, and a wetland) to identify Hg methylation hotspots and seasonal differences in MeHg cycling unique to Arctic ecosystems. Ponds and satu

In vivo Visualization of the Process of Hg2+ Bioaccumulation in Water Flea Daphnia carinata by a Novel Aggregation-Induced Emission Fluorogen.

This paper employs a specially designed aggregation-induced emission fluorogen (AIEgen) to in vivo visualize the process of Hg2+ bioaccumulation in a common species of freshwater zooplankton Daphnia carinata (D. carinata) by two methods, direct Hg2+ absorption and ingestion of Hg2+ contaminated food. We analysed the relevance between photoluminescence (PL, I595 /I480 ) ratios and Hg2+ (CHg2+ ) and developed the master curve for Hg2+ determination based on measuring the PL intensity of the solution. Meanwhile, fluorescent image analysis showed that the major recipient organs of Hg2+ in D. carin

Recent increase in Nybelinia surmenicola prevalence and intensity in Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) off the United States west coast.

A larval marine cestode was found in 82.0% of 834 Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) stomachs collected from 341 trawl stations along the United States west coast during the summers of 2008 and 2009. Morphology and DNA sequencing was used to identify the cestode as Nybelinia surmenicola. In an examination of 131 Pacific hake stomachs collected from the same region in 1999, N. surmenicola prevalence was 35.1%. The results from a general linear model suggested that their prevalence is influenced by year and latitude, Pacific hake size, and sex. Mean intensity of N. surmenicola in 2008-2009 was

Blue whales versus humpback whales, frenzy for food or contaminants? Trophodynamics of methylmercury and trace elements in Patagonian fjords.

Baleen whales foraging in the fjords of northern Chilean Patagonia are exposed to contaminant hotspots and high primary productivity. To evaluate ecotoxicological risk, we quantified methylmercury (MeHg) and eight trace elements (Al, As, Cd, Fe, Li, Mn, Se and Zn) across a whale-prey food web comprising blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus), humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), krill (Euphausia sp.), zooplankton (e.g. amphipods) and squat lobster (Grimothea gregaria). Stable isotope (δ13C, δ15N, δ34S) mixing models were used to reconstruct diet and contextualize contaminant pathways. MeHg c

Bioaccumulation and Toxicity of Tritiated Water in Jellyfish.

Global nuclear power capacity is expanding rapidly, with most facilities located along coastlines. Tritiated water (HTO) is a significant radioactive byproduct of nuclear power plants and is routinely discharged into the oceans. Despite widespread release, radioecological impacts of HTO on marine zooplankton remain poorly understood. Of particular concern are jellyfish, which are composed of >95% water and distributed throughout the oceans, potentially rendering them highly susceptible to tritium bioaccumulation. This study provides the first comprehensive assessment of HTO bioaccumulation, or

Environmental Drivers and Trophic Transfer of Domoic Acid in a Eutrophic Subtropical Estuary: Linking Toxigenic Pseudonitzschia Dynamics to Ecosystem Risks.

Domoic acid (DA), a neurotoxin produced by certain diatoms of Pseudonitzschia, poses significant risks to marine ecosystems and human health, yet its dynamics in subtropical eutrophic estuaries remain poorly understood. This study investigates DA production and trophic transfer in the Pearl River Estuary, combining chemotaxonomy, morphological identification, ITS1 metabarcoding, and HPLC-MS/MS analysis. We revealed strong seasonal and spatial heterogeneity in Pseudonitzschia assemblages, identifying Pseudonitzschia cuspidata Clade III as a dominant DA producer with an estimated in situ cellula

Keystone seabird may face thermoregulatory challenges in a warming Arctic.

Climate change affects the Arctic more than any other region, resulting in evolving weather, vanishing sea ice and altered biochemical cycling, which may increase biotic exposure to chemical pollution. We tested thermoregulatory impacts of these changes on the most abundant Arctic seabird, the little auk (Alle alle). This small diving species uses sea ice-habitats for foraging on zooplankton and resting. We equipped eight little auks with 3D accelerometers to monitor behavior, and ingested temperature recorders to measure body temperature (Tb). We also recorded weather conditions, and collecte

Comparative toxicity of hydrocarbons for evaluation of Lysmata boggessi as an experimental proxy for deep-water column micronekton.

The potential impacts of sub-surface hydrocarbon plumes to deep-water column micronekton are an important consideration in a more complete understanding of ecosystem effects resulting from deep-sea oil spills. However, evaluating toxicity in these organisms presents multiple challenges, and the use of a shallow-water proxy species allows comparison and validation of experimental results. This study thus examined the suitability of the peppermint shrimp, Lysmata boggessi, as an experimental proxy for ecologically important deep-sea zooplankton/micronekton in hydrocarbon toxicity assays. This cr

Parasite transmission in complex communities: predators and alternative hosts alter pathogenic infections in amphibians.

While often studied in isolation, host-parasite interactions are typically embedded within complex communities. Other community members, including predators and alternative hosts, can therefore alter parasite transmission (e.g., the dilution effect), yet few studies have experimentally evaluated more than one such mechanism. Here, we used data from natural wetlands to design experiments investigating how alternative hosts and predators of parasites mediate trematode (Ribeiroia ondatrae) infection in a focal amphibian host (Pseudacris regilla). In short-term predation bioassays involving mollus

Marine dinoflagellates show induced life-history shifts to escape parasite infection in response to water-borne signals.

Many dinoflagellate species form dormant resting cysts as a part of their life cycle, and in some freshwater species, hatching of these cysts can be delayed by the presence of water-borne signals from grazing zooplankton. Some marine dinoflagellates can form temporary cysts, which may function to resist unfavourable short-term environmental conditions. We investigated whether the marine dinoflagellate Alexandrium ostenfeldii is able to induce an increased resistance to the parasitic flagellate Parvilucifera infectans by forming temporary cysts. We performed several laboratory experiments where

Wide range of metallic and organic contaminants in various tissues of the Antarctic prion, a planktonophagous seabird from the Southern Ocean.

Trace elements (n=14) and persistent organic pollutants (POPs, n=30) were measured in blood, liver, kidney, muscle and feathers of 10 Antarctic prions (Pachyptila desolata) from Kerguelen Islands, southern Indian Ocean, in order to assess their concentrations, tissue distribution, and inter-tissue and inter-contaminant relationships. Liver, kidney and feathers presented the highest burdens of arsenic, cadmium and mercury, respectively. Concentrations of cadmium, copper, iron, and zinc correlated in liver and muscle, suggesting that uptake and pathways of metabolism and storage were similar for

Age-dependent survival, reproduction and photorepair activity in Daphnia magna (Straus, 1820) after exposure to artificial ultraviolet radiation.

We examined age-related vulnerability of Daphnia magna to UV-B (ultraviolet-B radiation, 280-320 nm), the age-related relationships between UV-B dosage and reproduction, and the effects of duration of PRR (photorecovery radiation) on survival and fecundity. Animals were exposed to 0, 6, 9 or 12 h UV-B (peak emission 312 nm) at 1, 2, 3 or 4 days of age and followed to 12 days. Survival decreased with increasing exposure to UV-B, but increased with age at exposure. Duration of UV-B, but not age at exposure, decreased offspring production. Survival increased with an increase in duration of PRR fo

Pseudo-nitzschia, Nitzschia, and domoic acid: New research since 2011.

Some diatoms of the genera Pseudo-nitzschia and Nitzschia produce the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA), a compound that caused amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) in humans just over 30 years ago (December 1987) in eastern Canada. This review covers new information since two previous reviews in 2012. Nitzschia bizertensis was subsequently discovered to be toxigenic in Tunisian waters. The known distribution of N. navis-varingica has expanded from Vietnam to Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia. Furthermore, 15 new species (and one new variety) of Pseudo-nitzschia have been discovered, b

Net methylmercury production as a basis for improved risk assessment of mercury-contaminated sediments.

Sediments contaminated by various sources of mercury (Hg) were studied at 8 sites in Sweden covering wide ranges of climate, salinity, and sediment types. At all sites, biota (plankton, sediment living organisms, and fish) showed enhanced concentrations of Hg relative to corresponding organisms at nearby reference sites. The key process determining the risk at these sites is the net transformation of inorganic Hg to the highly toxic and bioavailable methylmercury (MeHg). Accordingly, Hg concentrations in Perca fluviatilis were more strongly correlated to MeHg (p < 0.05) than to inorganic Hg co

Climate-driven population dynamics, growth, and phenology of the moon jellyfish Aurelia coerulea in the Mediterranean thau lagoon.

Global warming is reshaping marine ecosystems by altering species distributions, trophic interactions, and the timing of life-cycle events. Gelatinous zooplankton, such as jellyfish, are key players in these dynamics, yet long-term field records remain rare, limiting our ability to assess their ecological responses to climate change. Here, we analyzed a 13-year time series (2010-2023, excluding 2012) of Aurelia coerulea (von Lendenfeld, 1884) in Thau Lagoon, a French Mediterranean coastal ecosystem, based on bi-monthly sampling. Abundance and body size were quantified for both ephyra and medus

Ecological risks of olivine with different particle sizes and dosages on planktonic ecosystems during ocean alkalinization.

With industrialization, global climate change has intensified. Ocean alkalinization via olivine addition enhances seawater alkalinity and carbon sequestration but its ecological risks remain poorly understood. In this study, Chlorella vulgaris and Brachionus plicatilis were used as model organisms. Olivine of different particle sizes (≤38 μm, 50-74 μm, ≥154 μm) and dosages (1‰, 2‰) was applied in laboratory experiments with molecular analyses and model evaluation to assess effects on planktonic ecosystems and carbon sequestration. Results indicate strong particle-size dependence, with finer pa

Different transfer pathways of an organochlorine pesticide across marine tropical food webs assessed with stable isotope analysis.

Chlordecone is a persistent organochlorine pesticide used in the banana fields of the French West Indies from 1972 to 1993. Three marine habitats (mangroves, seagrass beds and coral reefs) of two study sites located downstream contaminated rivers were chosen to evaluate the level of contamination of marine food webs. On each habitat, the food chain collected included suspended organic matter, primary producers (macroalgae, algal turf, seagrass), zooplankton, symbiotic organisms (corals, sea anemones), primary consumers (herbivores, suspension feeders, biofilm feeders), omnivores and detritivor
