Long-Term Outcome of Combined Lateral Tarsal Strip With Temporal Permanent Tarsorrhaphy for Correction of Paralytic Ectropion Caused By Facial Nerve Palsy.

Paralytic ectropion caused by facial nerve palsy often requires surgical intervention for cornea protection. In this study, the authors intended to investigate the long-term surgical outcome of their surgical technique of correcting paralytic ectropion, which is a combined lateral tarsal strip and minimal temporal permanent tarsorrhaphy. The authors performed a retrospective chart review of patients who underwent paralytic ectropion repair by combined lateral tarsal strip with minimal temporal permanent tarsorrhaphy (5  mm) from January 2010 to December 2012. Patients with at least 1 year of f

Reference Jitter Values for Concentric Needle Electrode of Orbicularis Oculi and Frontalis Muscles Using Voluntary Activation Method in Sudanese Population.

Single fibre electromyography is the most sensitive neurophysiological test for the diagnosis of neuromuscular junction disorders, particularly myasthenia gravis. The study aimed at establishing concentric needle (CN) normal jitter values for voluntarily activated orbicularis-oculi (V-OOc) & Frontalis (V-FRO) muscles in Sudanese population. 57 healthy volunteers (20 males & 37 females) were included in the study (mean Age 43.6 ± 14.2 years, range 18-70 years). V-OOc and V-FRO were tested in the same individual using CN. Jitter values were expressed as the mean consecutive difference (MCD) of 3

[Linear accelerator-based stereotactic radiosurgery for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. Nine years' experience in a single institution].

INTRODUCTION. Pharmacological treatment is the first therapeutic step towards controlling pain in trigeminal neuralgia, but 25-50% of patients become medication resistant. There are currently several surgical alternatives for treating these patients. AIM. To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of stereotactic radiosurgery for the treatment of patients with trigeminal neuralgia. PATIENTS AND METHODS. A follow-up study was conducted on 30 patients who underwent radiosurgery using a Novalis linear accelerator. Eighty per cent of the dosage was calculated at the isocentre, the entry zone of the

Surgical desensitisation of the mechanoreceptors in Müller's muscle relieves chronic tension-type headache caused by tonic reflexive contraction of the occipitofrontalis muscle in patients with aponeurotic blepharoptosis.

Proprioceptively innervated intramuscular connective tissues in Müller's muscle function as exterior mechanoreceptors to induce reflex contraction of the levator and occipitofrontalis muscles. In aponeurotic blepharoptosis, since the levator aponeurosis is disinserted from the tarsus, stretching of the mechanoreceptors in Müller's muscle is increased even on primary gaze to induce phasic and tonic reflexive contraction of the occipitofrontalis muscle. It was hypothesised that in certain patients with aponeurotic blepharoptosis, the presence of tonic reflexive contraction of the occipitofrontal

Histone deacetylase inhibitors improve learning consolidation in young and in KA-induced-neurodegeneration and SAMP-8-mutant mice.

Histone deacetylases (HDAC) are enzymes that maintain chromatin in a condensate state, related with absence of transcription. We have studied the role of HDAC on learning and memory processes. Both eyeblink classical conditioning (EBCC) and object recognition memory (ORM) induced an increase in histone H3 acetylation (Ac-H3). Systemic treatment with HDAC inhibitors improved cognitive processes in EBCC and in ORM tests. Immunohistochemistry and gene expression analyses indicated that administration of HDAC inhibitors decreased the stimulation threshold for Ac-H3, and gene expression to reach th

Amygdala dysfunction in men with the fragile X premutation.

Premutation alleles (55-200 CGG repeats) of the fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1) gene are associated with autism spectrum disorder in childhood, premature ovarian failure, and the neurodegenerative disorder, fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS). FXTAS, and perhaps the other clinical presentations among carriers, are thought to be due to toxic gain-of-function of elevated levels of the expanded-repeat FMR1 mRNA. Previous structural MRI studies have implicated the amygdala as a potential site of dysfunction underlying social deficits and/or risk for FXTAS. As a preliminary in

A study of the neurological disorder associated with acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis due to enterovirus 70.

Ninety cases of the neurological manifestations associated with acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis caused by Enterovirus 70 (EV 70) are reported. The patients were seen during the widespread epidemics in 1971 and 1981. Male adults were predominantly affected by a "polio-like" paralysis of the limbs and/or cranial nerves. Root pains were often complained of early in the disease. In the absence of a necropsy, clinical and neurophysiological examinations helped to localise the lesions. Significant antibody titres against EV 70 were demonstrated in the serum and more relevantly in the CSF. Though o

Development of levodopa-induced dyskinesias in parkinsonian monkeys may depend upon rate of symptom onset and/or duration of symptoms.

Levodopa-induced dyskinesias (LIDs) present a major problem for the long-term management of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Due to the interdependence of risk factors in clinical populations, it is difficult to independently examine factors that may influence the development of LIDs. Using macaque monkeys with different types of MPTP-induced parkinsonism, the current study evaluated the degree to which rate of symptom progression, symptom severity, and response to and duration of levodopa therapy may be involved in the development of LIDs. Monkeys with acute (short-term) MPTP exposure, rapi

The clinical diagnosis of cranial nerve injuries at operations on the carotid arteries.

Operation on the carotid arteries (CA) prevent strokes in patients with occlusions and stenoses of these arteries. We have worked out the measures for preventing perioperative strokes. During interventions on the CA, iatrogenic injuries to the cranial nerves (CN) are paid little attention. 1186 patients underwent 1362 operations. There were 26 lethal outcomes and 38 strokes. 146 (0.7%) cases of CN injuries were documented. Of these, there were 2 (0.1%) injuries to the accessory nerve, 14 (1%) to the glossopharyngeal nerve, 28 (2%) to the hypoglossal nerve, 46 (3.4%) injuries to vagal nerve bra

Analysis of some central actions of nicotine injected into the cerebral ventricles of cats.

1. In unanaesthetized cats intraventricular injections of 2.5-10 mug nicotine produced blinking, narrowing of the palpebral fissures, retching, vomiting and asynchronous twitching of the ears. With larger doses (30-100 mug) the ear twitching was interrupted for a short time by laying back of the ears. Respiration first became laboured and deep, then rapid and shallow following which panting occurred. There was salivation, loud calling, micturition and defaecation. With still larger doses (300-1000 mug) there was torticollis, ataxia and blind charging sometimes followed by a clonic-tonic convul

Trigeminal pathways for hypertonic saline- and light-evoked corneal reflexes.

Cornea-evoked eyeblinks maintain tear film integrity on the ocular surface in response to dryness and protect the eye from real or potential damage. Eyelid movement following electrical stimulation has been well studied in humans and animals; however, the central neural pathways that mediate protective eyeblinks following natural nociceptive signals are less certain. The aim of this study was to assess the role of the trigeminal subnucleus interpolaris/caudalis (Vi/Vc) transition and subnucleus caudalis/upper cervical cord (Vc/C1) junction regions on orbicularis oculi electromyographic (OOemg)

Startle response in behaviorally inhibited adolescents with a lifetime occurrence of anxiety disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Behaviorally inhibited children face increased risk for anxiety disorders, although factors that predict which children develop a disorder remain poorly specified. The current study examines whether the startle reflex response may be used to differentiate between behaviorally inhibited adolescents with and without a history of anxiety. METHOD: Participants were assessed for behavioral inhibition during toddlerhood and early childhood. They returned to the laboratory as adolescents and completed a fear-potentiated startle paradigm and a clinical diagnostic interview (Schedule for Af
