Gestational and lactational exposure to phthalates and nanoplastics induces inflammation and oxidative imbalance in the prostate of adult rats.

The intrauterine microenvironment is highly susceptible to environmental disturbances, which may result in persistent effects on offspring health. Given that plastic-derived contaminants can cross the placental barrier and act as endocrine-disrupting chemicals, this study evaluated the effects of perinatal exposure to an environmentally relevant phthalate mixture (PM) and nanoplastics (NPs) on the prostate of adult rats. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were allocated into 6 experimental groups: Ctrl (vehicle), T1 (20 μg/kg/d PM), T2 (200 mg/kg/d PM), T3 (NPs: 1.0 mg/kg/d), T4 (20 μg PM + NPs), an

Assessing the impact of sub-chronic polyethylene terephthalate nanoplastic exposure on male reproductive health in mice.

The widespread use of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in food and beverage packaging raises concerns about its potential health effects, particularly when PET-derived nanoplastics (PET-NPs) are released into the environment. This study investigates the reproductive toxicity of PET-NPs in male mice. Mice were exposed to PET-NPs at doses of 0.1 mg/day and 0.5 mg/day for 28 days, and the testes index, sperm count, sperm morphology, Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) production, DNA integrity, histopathology, and spermatogenesis were evaluated. PET-NP exposure resulted in a significant decrease in spe

Charge-dependent effects of nanoplastics on Helicobacter pylori virulence and gastric pathogenesis.

Nanoplastics (NPs) are emerging environmental contaminants whose surface charge governs their biological interactions. This study investigated how differentially charged NPs modulate Helicobacter pylori virulence and gastric pathogenesis. A chronic infection mouse model was used to evaluate co-exposure to H. pylori and positive (PS-NH2), negative (PS-COOH), or neutral (PS) NPs. Gastric NPs accumulation and tissue injury were assessed by TEM and H&E staining. Oxidative stress markers, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA), antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase (S

Polystyrene nanospheres-induced hepatotoxicity in swamp eel (Monopterus albus): From biochemical, pathological and transcriptomic perspectives.

As ubiquitous emerging pollutants, microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments have aroused critical global concerns. Despite the occurrence and characteristics of MPs in freshwater agroecosystems well-described by our previous study, their ecotoxicological implications in Monopterus albus remains unfathomed. Herein, we dissected toxic effects and mechanisms of PS-NPs exposure against M. albus hepatic tissues at concentrations of 0.5 (L), 5 (M), 10 (H) mg/L for 28 days using physiochemical measurements, histopathological analysis and transcriptomic sequencing. Results showed that upon PS-NPs t

Assessment of cancer-related signaling pathways in responses to polystyrene nanoplastics via a kidney-testis microfluidic platform (KTP).

As a new type of environmental pollutants, micro/nano plastics (MPs/NPs) derived from plastic products are commonly contact in daily life and lead to some serious health issues. The toxicity effects of MPs/NPs on the human body have aroused wide concerns. Although MPs/NPs have been reported to be transmitted into the kidney and reproductive organs, the molecular mechanisms of MPs/NPs toxicity remain unclear due to the lack of a physiologically relevant organ-organ linking platform in vitro. Here, we present a kidney-testis microfluidic platform (KTP) with NPs exposure that enables the communic

Nanoplastics trigger glial-neuronal collagen signaling miscommunication to exacerbate cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with limited treatments and poorly defined environmental risks. Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are widespread pollutants linked to neurotoxicity, but their role in AD remains unclear. METHODS: We investigated the effects of 90-day intragastric exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) in amyloid precursor protein/presenilin 1 (APP/PS1) mice using behavioral tests, brain imaging, histopathology, and cell-type-resolved proteomics. RESULTS: PS-NPs exacerbated cognitive deficits and hippocampal damage in APP/P

A digestive system microphysiological platform for assessment of internal-exposure risks and metabolic disease mechanisms induced by multi-size nano-plastics.

Nano-plastics (NPs) are emerging hazardous environmental contaminants that pose health risks with size-dependent toxic effects and are potential risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and lipid metabolism disorders including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, their underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. To shed more light on the causes of these risks, we developed a digestive system microphysiological platform (DS-MPP) for simulating dynamic internal-exposure of multi-size NPs in the gastrointestinal tract and liver. Multi-omics analysis based on DS-MPP revea

Nanoplastics disrupt hepatic lipid metabolism via the inhibition of PPARγ: a study based on digestive system exposure.

Nanoplastics (NPs) are emerging environmental contaminants capable of crossing biological barriers and accumulating in organs such as the liver, raising growing concerns about their potential contribution to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Notably, bottled water has been recognised as a major daily source of NP exposure. However, the associations between NP exposure and NAFLD onset, as well as the mechanistic basis, remain unclear. To investigate this, we analysed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013-2016 cycles, using daily bottled water intak

Maternal exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics leads to ovotoxicity in female mouse offspring.

Polystyrene nanoplastics (nPS) have been involved in male reproductive health by inducing testicular damage in offspring. However, whether nPS exposure affects reproductive development in female offspring remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of maternal nPS exposure on ovarian development in offspring. 31 ICR mice were orally administered normal drinking water (control group) or nPS at concentrations of 0.1 µg/ml, 1 µg/ml, and 10 µg/ml in normal drinking water for 11 consecutive weeks, encompassing the pre-mating, mating, pregnancy, and lactation periods. Efficacy of DHA-enriched phosphatidylserine and its underlying mechanism in alleviating polystyrene nanoplastics-induced hepatotoxicity in mice.

OBJECTIVE: Plastic pollution has become a global pollution problem that cannot be ignored. As the main destination of human oral intake, the toxic effects of plastic on the digestive system represented by the intestine and liver are the focus of current research. Marine-derived DHA-PS has a variety of biological activities, mainly focusing on improving brain function and regulating lipid metabolism. However, whether it has an improvement effect on PS-NPs-induced hepato-intestinal injury and the underlying mechanism remain unclear. METHODS: A murine liver injury model was established by gavage

The porcine corpus luteum as a model for studying the effects of nanoplastics.

Nanoplastics (NPs) affect fertility. We evaluated the effects of NPs treatment on luteal and endothelial cells. We examined crucial markers of growth and redox status. NPs treatment did not induce changes in ATP levels in luteal cells, while it increased (p< 0.05) their proliferation. In endothelial cells, no change in proliferation was detected, while an increase (p<0.05) in ATP levels was observed. The increase of reactive oxygen species, superoxide anion (p<0.05) and nitric oxide (p<0.001) was detected in both cell types, which also showed changes in superoxide dismutase enzyme activity as

Maltol attenuates polystyrene nanoplastic-induced enterotoxicity by promoting AMPK/mTOR/TFEB-mediated autophagy and modulating gut microbiota.

The production and application of nanoplastics has been increased during decades, and the enterotoxicity caused by their bioaccumulation has attracted vast attention. Maltol was proved to exert a protective effect on gut damage induced by carbon tetrachloride and cisplatin, indicating its confrontation with nanoplastics-induced intestinal toxicity. To explore the ameliorative effects of maltol on polystyrene nanoplastics (PS)-mediated enterotoxicity and the underlying mechanism, the mice were exposed to PS (100 mg/kg), combining with or without the treatment of maltol treatment at 50 and 100 m

Biodegradation of sachet water polyethylene plastic waste using bacteria isolates.

Introduced in the early 1990s, Nigeria's most consumed potable water packaging material is dumped indiscriminately into various environments despite concerns about its harmful effects on these environments. The study was designed to isolate and characterise potential microbial degraders and their degradation potentials using various methods. Various environmental samples (soil, sediment, and marine water) were obtained using standard protocols. Microplastic from the sachet water (SW) plastic was generated mechanically using a sterile grater and used to enrich the various samples from which pot

Migration of oligomers from a food contact biopolymer based on polylactic acid (PLA) and polyester.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biopolymer commonly used in food packaging due to its good characteristics, similar to PET. To evaluate the safety of this material, the analysis of the non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) is required. Oligomers are NIAS and their behavior needs a deep study, especially if they migrate to the food. In this work, the analysis of the polymer and the migration to food simulants was carried out. A total dissolution/precipitation procedure was applied to PLA pellets and films, using dichloromethane and ethanol as solvent and antisolvent system respectively. The migr

The potential of native microalgae consortia to remove pharmaceutical compounds present in treated wastewater.

Wastewater treatment plants play a key role in the release of pharmaceuticals and other contaminants into the aquatic environment, causing negative effects on the ecosystems of receiving water bodies. This work aimed to assess the removal efficiency of real loads of these contaminants by wastewater-native microalgae consortia acting on treated wastewater previously subjected to secondary treatment. Wastewater sampling and removal efficiency experiments were conducted over 1 year at three different sampling points. Nineteen pharmaceutical compounds of different drug classes (stimulants, anticon

Mitigating tire wear particles and tire additive chemicals in stormwater with permeable pavements.

6PPD-quinone (6PPDQ) is a recently discovered chemical that is acutely toxic to coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and can form via environmental exposure of 6PPD, a compound found extensively in tire wear particles (TWPs). TWPs deposited on roads are transported to aquatic ecosystems via stormwater, contributing to microplastic pollution and organic contaminant loads. However, little is known about the fate of TWPs and their leachable contaminants in these systems. We conducted three experiments at a high school in Tacoma, Washington, to quantify the treatment performance of permeable pavemen

COVID-19 clinical waste reuse: A triboelectric touch sensor for IoT-cloud supported smart hand sanitizer dispenser.

Earth's plastic pollution has increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the world is on the doorstep of an enormous waste pandemic. The extensive use of mandatory personal protectives like masks, gloves, and PPE kits and the lack of proper waste management systems lead to a rise in the plastic pollution content of the earth. Such disposable and non-biodegradable personal protectives are thrown out to the environment after use. These distributed wastes pollute land, soil, and water bodies and effects their ecosystems. This research work establishes the concept of a waste-to-energy conversion

Acute toxicity of tire wear particles and leachate to Daphnia magna.

Tire wear particles (TWP) are a new pollutant widely present in the environment, and have been identified as microplastics (MPs), which are receiving increasing attention due to their toxic effects on aquatic organisms. In this study, D. magna was used as test organism, and the leachate from TWP was prepared by hot water extraction for 30 (30-E) and 120 min (120-E). The acute toxic effects of particles and leachate on D. magna were studied under different exposure concentrations. The results showed that zinc and pyrene were the highest detected contaminants in the leachate. The 48 h-LC50 value
