[Cancer risk in asbestos-cement industry workers in Poland].

A cohort study was carried out in order to evaluate the cancer risk in the asbestos-cement industry workers. The cohort consisted of workers employed in four asbestos-cement plants. One of those plants was established in 1924, the other three in the 1960s and 1970s. Currently only two of these plants continue their production. The plants used mainly chrysotile asbestos as well as crocidolite and amosite. Amphibolite asbestos was used before the mid-nineteen eighties in production of pressure pipes utilising about 15% of the total quantity of asbestos used. The measurements of the asbestos fibr

A systematic multidisciplinary initiative for reducing the risk of complications in adult scoliosis surgery.

OBJECTIVE Systematic multidisciplinary approaches to improving quality and safety in complex surgical care have shown promise. Complication rates from complex spine surgery range from 10% to 90% for all surgeries, and the overall mortality rate is 1%-4%. These rates suggest the need for improved perioperative complex spine surgery processes designed to minimize risk and improve quality. METHODS The Group Health Research Institute and Virginia Mason Medical Center implemented a systematic multidisciplinary protocol, the Seattle Spine Team Protocol, in 2010. This protocol involves the following

Medical Utilization and Expenditures Before and After Total Knee and Hip Arthroplasty in Osteoarthritis in Seoul, South Korea: A Retrospective Matched Cohort Study.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic disease requiring long-term management, and its burden is expected to grow with population aging, including in South Korea's rapidly aging population. Although total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) are common interventions for OA, their long-term association with healthcare utilization and expenditures across benefit classifications remains unclear. This study examined differences in medical utilization and expenditures, disaggregated by benefit classification, between patients who underwent TKA/THA and matched non-surgical

HIV, nephrotoxic medications, and chronic kidney disease: Prevalence, risk factors, and mediation analyses among people with and without HIV enrolled in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS)/ Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS) combined cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects over 37 million adults in the United States, and people living with HIV (PLWH) are at greater risk for progression to end-stage kidney disease. Although both conditions are common among PLWH, the potential pathways through which depression and use of medications with nephrotoxic potential may influence CKD development remain underexplored. We evaluated the relationships of depression and nephrotoxic medication use with CKD prevalence among PLWH, and investigated the potential mediating effects of these factors on the pathway to CKD among PLWH.

Associations of ambient exposure to benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene with daily mortality: a multicountry time-series study in 757 global locations.

BACKGROUND: The presence of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene isomers (BTEX) in the environment is of increasing concern due to their toxicity and ubiquity. Although the adverse health effects of BTEX exposure have been documented, robust epidemiological evidence from large-scale, multicountry studies using advanced exposure assessment methodologies remains scarce. We aimed to assess the association of short-term ambient exposure to individual BTEX components and their mixture with daily total, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality on a global scale. METHODS: Daily data on mortal

Reduction in malaria burden following the introduction of indoor residual spraying in areas protected by long-lasting insecticidal nets in Western Kenya, 2016-2018.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) are the main malaria vector control measures deployed in Kenya. Widespread pyrethroid resistance among the primary vectors in Western Kenya has necessitated the re-introduction of IRS using an organophosphate insecticide, pirimiphos-methyl (Actellic® 300CS), as a pyrethroid resistance management strategy. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the combined use of non-pyrethroid IRS and LLINs has yielded varied results. We aimed to evaluate the effect of non-pyrethroid IRS and LLINs on malaria indicators in a high
