Infants' responsiveness to the auditory and visual attributes of a sounding/moving stimulus.

Responses to unimodal and multimodal attributes of a compound auditory/visual stimulus were investigated in 4-, 6-, 8-, and 10-month-old infants. First, infants were habituated to a compound stimulus consisting of a visual stimulus that moved up and down on a video monitor and a sound that occurred each time the visual stimulus reversed direction at the bottom. Once each infant met a habituation criterion, a series of test trials was administered to assess responsiveness to the components of the compound stimulus. Response was defined as the total duration of visual fixation in each trial. In

The effect of ingested alcohol on fusion latency at various viewing distances.

Although diplopia is a frequently reported symptom of severe alcohol intoxication, there have been few past attempts to describe in any systematic fashion the specific impact of alcohol on fusion. In the present experiment, fusion latency was assessed for 8 male emmetropes. At the beginning of the alcohol condition, they consumed a drink containing 1.4 ml/kg of 95% ethanol, plus diluent. For the placebo condition, the drink consisted only of diluent. In each condition, fusion latency (the time required to fuse a binocularly visible target) was recorded for targets requiring a magnitude of verg

Alcohol impairs visual presence/absence detection more for females than for males.

Ninety subjects (45 males, 45 females) were given 0.0, 0.5, or 1.0 ml/kg body weight of 190-proof ethanol and tested for chance-level presence/absence detection thresholds with energy-masked presentations of traffic signs and blank inputs. Alcohol produced higher blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels, and higher detection threshold durations, for females than for males. These results indicate that alcohol influences precortical visual processing and that the influence is greater for females than for males. The higher bioavailability of alcohol in women is likely due to less gastric oxidatio

Small fiber neuropathy in unexpected clinical settings: a review.

Small fiber neuropathy (SFN) is being recognized with increasing frequency in neuromuscular practice due to improved diagnostic techniques. Although there are some common etiologies, up to one-third of cases are considered idiopathic. In recent years, several disorders have unexpectedly been reported in association with SFN, on clinical grounds and complementary investigations, including quantitative sensory testing, intraepidermal nerve fiber density and confocal corneal microscopy. Knowledge of these disorders is important in clinical practice as increased awareness enables prompt diagnosis

Pain and plasticity: is chronic pain always associated with somatosensory cortex activity and reorganization?

The somatosensory cortex remodels in response to sensory deprivation, with regions deprived of input invaded by neighboring representations. The degree of cortical reorganization is correlated with ongoing pain intensity, which has led to the assumption that chronic pain conditions are invariably associated with somatosensory cortex reorganization. Because the presentation and etiology of chronic pain vary, we determined whether cortical changes in human subjects are similar for differing pain types. Using functional and anatomical magnetic resonance imaging, we found that, while human patient

Home-Based Intervention Tool for Cardiac Telerehabilitation: Protocol for a Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Among cardiovascular diseases, adult patients with congenital heart disease represent a population that has been continuously increasing, which is mainly due to improvement of the pathophysiological framing, including the development of surgical and reanimation techniques. However, approximately 20% of these patients will require surgery in adulthood and 40% of these cases will necessitate reintervention for residual defects or sequelae of childhood surgery. In this field, cardiac rehabilitation (CR) in the postsurgical phase has an important impact on the patient by improving psyc

Trigeminal Somatosensory-evoked Potentials (TSEPs) Elicited by Electrical Stimulation of Endosseous Oral Implants: An In Vivo Study.

AIM: The current in vivo investigation aimed to evaluate trigeminal somatosensory-evoked potentials (TSEPs) on endosseous oral implants to accurately perceive their neurophysiological integration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two endosseous dental implants, one in each of the mandibular and maxillary jaws, were selected for the study at least 4 months after the implants were placed in the mandible and 6 months after they were implanted in the maxilla, respectively. Each of the participants received electrical stimulation to the implant. A current stimulator was used to give square-wave (alte

A Nationwide survey of safety protocols and chemosensory assessments by Japanese clinicians pre- and post-COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: There has been an increase of attention and awareness of smell and taste loss due to the impact of COVID-19. However, little is known about the influence of COVID-19 on the number of psychophysical tests performed, the timing of these tests, or the protection protocols employed to protect against virus transmission. This study aimed to explore the changes in examination approaches, types of tests employed, and safety measures adopted by clinicians before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A survey was distributed to 404 institutes of the Oto-Rhino Laryngological Society of J

The Care of Adults with Intellectual Disabilities: Informal (Family) Caregivers' Perspectives.

CONTEXT: The care of adults with intellectual disabilities is marginalized and rarely studied in Poland. In recent years, this issue has gained particular importance, partly due to the increasing life expectancy of people with ID. This paper presents a study of the function of informal caregivers for adults with ID, comprising parents who provide regular, constant, physical and emotional support and assistance with everyday activities to their adult children. Due to cultural and institutional conditions, Polish society sets high expectations for families regarding the care of their dependent m

The Value of Electrically Evoked Stapedius Reflex in Determining the Maximum Comfort Level of a Cochlear Implant.

BACKGROUND: One of the most important steps for good user performance with a cochlear implant (CI) is activation and programming, aimed at determining the dynamic range. In adults, current levels are determined by psychophysical measures. In babies, small children, or individuals with multiple disorders, this procedure requires techniques that may provide inconsistent responses because of auditory inexperience or the age of the child, making it a very difficult process that demands the collaboration of both the patient and the family. PURPOSE: To study the relationship between the electricall

Space-based bias of covert visual attention in complex regional pain syndrome.

See Legrain (doi:10.1093/awx188) for a scientific commentary on this article. Some patients with complex regional pain syndrome report that movements of the affected limb are slow, more effortful, and lack automaticity. These symptoms have been likened to the syndrome that sometimes follows brain injury called hemispatial neglect, in which patients exhibit attentional impairments and problems with movements affecting the contralesional side of the body and space. Psychophysical testing of patients with complex regional pain syndrome has found evidence for spatial biases when judging visual tar

A Novel Algorithm to Derive Spread of Excitation Based on Deconvolution.

OBJECTIVE: The width of the spread of excitation (SOE) curve has been widely thought to represent an estimate of SOE. Therefore, correlates between psychophysical parameters, such as pitch discrimination and speech perception, and the width of SOE curves, have long been investigated. However, to date, no relationships between these objective and subjective measurements have yet been determined. In a departure from the current thinking, the authors now propose that the SOE curve, recorded with forward masking, is the equivalent of a convolution operation. As such, deconvolution would be expecte

Sex & vision I: Spatio-temporal resolution.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral cortex has a very large number of testosterone receptors, which could be a basis for sex differences in sensory functions. For example, audition has clear sex differences, which are related to serum testosterone levels. Of all major sensory systems only vision has not been examined for sex differences, which is surprising because occipital lobe (primary visual projection area) may have the highest density of testosterone receptors in the cortex. We have examined a basic visual function: spatial and temporal pattern resolution and acuity. METHODS: We tested large groups of

Physiological evidence for impairment in autosomal dominant optic atrophy at the pre-ganglion level.

BACKGROUND: Functional studies in patients with autosomal dominant optic atrophy (ADOA) are usually confined to analysis of physiological and clinical impact at the ganglion cell (GG) and post GC levels. Here we aimed to investigate the impact of the disease at a pre-GC level and its correlation with GC/post-GC related measures. METHODS: Visual function was assessed in a population of 22 subjects (44 eyes) from 13 families with ADOA submitted to OPA1 mutation analysis. Quantitative psychophysical methods were used to assess konio and parvocellular chromatic pathways (Cambridge Colour Test) an

The diagnostic criteria for small fibre neuropathy: from symptoms to neuropathology.

Small fibre neuropathy (SFN), a condition dominated by neuropathic pain, is frequently encountered in clinical practise either as prevalent manifestation of more diffuse neuropathy or distinct nosologic entity. Aetiology of SFN includes pre-diabetes status and immune-mediated diseases, though it remains frequently unknown. Due to their physiologic characteristics, small nerve fibres cannot be investigated by routine electrophysiological tests, making the diagnosis particularly difficult. Quantitative sensory testing (QST) to assess the psychophysical thresholds for cold and warm sensations and

Cortical plasticity revealed by circumscribed retinal lesions or artificial scotomas.

We review the work of others in which the effects of circumscribed, topographically corresponding binocular retinal lesions on the topographic organization of the visual cortex revealed that there is a substantial degree of topographical plasticity in the primary visual cortices of adult cats and macaque monkeys. Despite the evidence indicating that the reorganization of the topographic map in primary visual cortices of adult cats and macaques related to the input from one eye could be suppressed for a long time by inputs related to the other eye, we observed a substantial degree of topographi

PET correlates of normal and impaired memory functions.

To date, positron emission tomography (PET) has been the only technology for the quantitative imaging of the changes of regional cerebral glucose (rCMRGl) or oxygen metabolism and blood flow (rCBF) associated with psychophysical stimulation and with the performance of mental tasks. So far, the majority of studies performed in healthy subjects demonstrated activation patterns involving not only certain limbic structures, most of all hippocampus, amygdala, parahippocampus, and cingulate, but also temporal, parietal, and occipital association cortex, depending on the applied paradigm. Indeed, the

Olfactory impairment in Huntington's disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal-dominant neurodegenerative disorder characterised by progressive impairment in cognitive, behavioural, and motor functions. Odour identification deficits have long been recognised as a non-motor impairment associated with HD and may thus represent a plausible biomarker candidate for use in the context of clinical trials evaluating novel disease-modifying therapies. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to evaluate whether odour identification is reduced in persons with Huntington's disease (PwHD) compared to healthy controls (HC). The protocol w
