Interaction of polystyrene nanoplastics and Helicobacter pylori modulates gastric cancer cellular functions and metastasis.

Polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) accumulate in human digestive tissues. They pose health risks as a new pollutant. Chronic Helicobacter pylori infection is the primary risk factor for gastric cancer (GC). This study tested whether PS-NPs and H. pylori internalize GC cells and their separate or combined exposure on cell proliferation, apoptosis, autophagy, and metastasis. PS-NPs were co-cultured with H. pylori in vitro. A liver metastasis model was established by exposing the GC cell line HGC-27 to PS-NPs alone or to PS-NPs + H. pylori, which were then injected into nude mice. Scanning electro

A transdisciplinary process-oriented approach to evaluate infant exposure to indoor dust.

BACKGROUND: Infants are uniquely vulnerable to indoor dust exposure due to behaviors such as mouthing (hand- or object-to-mouth), crawling with hands on the floor, and close proximity to floor surfaces where dust accumulates. Dust acts as a reservoir for toxicants, including heavy metals, flame retardants, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, plasticizers, microplastics, and antimicrobials, which pose significant risks via ingestion and inhalation. Dust also contains allergens and microorganisms that may adversely impact respiratory health but have also been linked to protective immune effects

Microbial communities associated with plastic fishing nets: diversity, potentially pathogenic and hydrocarbon degrading bacteria.

Abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) represent a major source of marine plastic litter pollution. Similar to other plastic litter, these items can provide a new surface for the growth of biofilms harboring distinct microbial communities, containing potential opportunistic pathogens or pollutant-degrading microorganisms. While knowledge is increasing for marine plastic litter and microplastic-associated biofilms, there is a gap on the plastisphere research for fishing gear. This study aimed to comprehend the structure and dynamics of the microbial communities attached to

Heterolanthanide Terephthalate Coordination Polymers: From the Fight against Counterfeiting to Plastic Waste Recycling.

ConspectusThe world's plastics production continues to grow and could triple by 2060. Unfortunately, only a small proportion of these plastics are currently recycled (around 30%). The remainder is incinerated (around 40%), causing high greenhouse gas emissions, or buried (around 30%), resulting in high levels of microplastic pollution. Ambitious national and international policies have been put in place to increase the proportion of recycled plastics, and major research efforts are underway to improve plastic recycling processes. Unfortunately, all recycling processes (chemical, physical, and

Colonic Barrier Dysfunction and Inflammation Induced by Nano-/Micro-Plastics Fibers in Mice via the FAK/NF-κB/iNOS and TLR4/NF-κB/iNOS Pathways.

As emerging environmental contaminants, nano- and micro-plastics (NMPs) have drawn increasing research attention due to potential hazards to organisms. Particle shape is a key factor influencing the toxic effects of NMPs, and NMPs of different shapes cause varying degrees of tissue damage. We investigated the specific mechanisms of polystyrene NMPs (PS-NMPs) with different shapes underlying damage to the colonic intestinal barrier. We divided 120 five-week-old male C57BL/6J mice into seven groups that were orally exposed to different doses of PS-NMPs for 5 weeks. Hematoxylin and eosin staining

Old Dog New Tricks: PLGA Microparticles as an Adjuvant for Insulin Peptide Fragment-Induced Immune Tolerance against Type 1 Diabetes.

Poly[lactic-co-(glycolic acid)] (PLGA) is arguably one of the most versatile synthetic copolymers used for biomedical applications. In vivo delivery of multiple substances including cells, pharmaceutical compounds, and antigens has been achieved by using PLGA-based micro-/nanoparticles although, presently, the exact biological impact of PLGA particles on the immune system remains controversial. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is one subtype of diabetes characterized by the attack of immune cells against self-insulin-producing pancreatic islet cells. Considering the autoimmune etiology of T1D and the rec

Micro/Nanoplastics and Periodontitis: An Environmental Microbiology Perspective on Oral Retention and Systemic Risk.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) have now been detected in human blood, placenta, and arterial tissue, yet the oral cavity has received strikingly little mechanistic attention despite serving as a primary portal of environmental exposure and a local site of polymer generation from dental and oral-care materials. This narrative review addresses that gap from an environmental microbiology perspective, synthesizing recent literature on periodontal disease, chronic low-grade inflammation, oral biofilms, dental materials, microbial-plastic interactions, and systemic chronic disease risk. Unlike prior

Decontamination of pollutants present in water, air, and soil through phytoremediation: a critical review.

Phytoremediation is a technique that uses plants to decontaminate polluted environments, such as soil, water and even air. Plants employ several mechanisms to remove, stabilize or degrade contaminants, depending on the nature of the pollutant and the environmental conditions. The main mechanisms include: phytoextraction, phytodegradation, phytovolatilization, phytostabilization and rhizofiltration. The uptake of heavy metals by plants is influenced by several key factors. Soil characteristics such as soil properties such as pH, organic matter content, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and textur

Exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics induces hepatotoxicity involving NRF2-NLRP3 signaling pathway in mice.

Nanoplastic contamination has been of intense concern by virtue of the potential threat to human and ecosystem health. Animal experiments have indicated that exposure to nanoplastics (NPs) can deposit in the liver and contribute to hepatic injury. To explore the mechanisms of hepatotoxicity induced by polystyrene-NPs (PS-NPs), mice and AML-12 hepatocytes were exposed to different dosages of 20 nm PS-NPs in this study. The results illustrated that in vitro and in vivo exposure to PS-NPs triggered excessive production of reactive oxygen species and repressed nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-li

Polystyrene nanoplastics deteriorate LPS-modulated duodenal permeability and inflammation in mice via ROS drived-NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway.

The widespread occurrence of nanoplastics (NPs), has markedly affected the ecosystem and has become a global threat to animals and human health. There is growing evidence showing that polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNPs) exposure induced enteritis and the intestinal barrier disorder. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) can trigger the inflammation burden of various tissues. Whether PSNPs deteriorate LPS-induced intestinal damage via ROS drived-NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway is remains unknown. In this study, PSNPs exposure/PSNPs and LPS co-exposure mice model were duplicated by intraperitoneal injection. The results s

Dietary rayon microfibers differentially reshape rearing water and host associated microbiomes of farmed European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax).

BACKGROUND: Viscose-rayon microfibres (RFs) are cellulosic microfibres widely dispersed throughout aquatic environments. Whether ingested by or suspended in the surrounding environment, these microfibres may impact both wild and farmed animals. A previous study on European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) showed that the increased presence of RFs in aquafeeds (CTRL-no RFs; RF1-0.001 g/kg; RF2-0.01 g/kg; RF3-0.1 g/kg) was linked to an exponential increase of RFs in water, intestine and skeletal muscle. This finding was associated to a fatty liver and tissue-specific transcriptional changes, depi

Seafood Toxicant Exposure During Pregnancy, Lactation, and Childhood and Child Outcomes: A Scoping Review.

Determining dietary recommendations for seafood consumed during pregnancy, lactation, and childhood requires consideration of the known nutritional benefits and potential harm due to toxicant exposure as they relate to child outcomes. This study aimed to describe the scope of the evidence associated with seafood-related toxicant exposure and child outcomes and to identify toxicant-outcome pairs that may have sufficient evidence to conduct a systematic review. We included studies examining seafood toxicant exposure during pregnancy, lactation, and childhood, and child outcomes. In total, 81 stu

Quality Analysis and Detection of Adulterants and Contaminations in Milk/Milk Powder by Raman Spectroscopy.

Milk and milk powder are central to global nutrition, yet remain vulnerable to adulteration and contamination. Adulteration using water, urea, ammonium sulfate, thiocyanates, detergents, melamine, or compositional changes with whey and carbohydrate fillers undermines nutritional quality, reduces consumer confidence, and challenges regulatory control, particularly in infant formula products. A field-ready analytical platform that is rapid, nondestructive, and capable of multi-adulterant surveillance is urgently needed across diverse dairy matrices. This review consolidates advances in Raman spe

Visible-light-driven removal of tetracycline antibiotics and reclamation of hydrogen energy from natural water matrices and wastewater by polymeric carbon nitride foam.

Water and energy are key sustainability issues that need to be addressed. Photocatalysis represents an attractive means to not only remediate polluted waters, but also harness solar energy. Unfortunately, the employment of photocatalysts remains a practical challenge in terms of high cost, low efficiency, secondary pollution and unexploited water matrices influence. This study investigated the feasibility of photocatalysis to both treat water and produce hydrogen with practical water systems. Polymeric carbon nitride foam (CNF) with large surface area and mesoporous structure was successfully

Biocompatibility in hemodialysis: artificial membrane and human blood interactions.

Hemodialysis, a cornerstone therapy for chronic kidney disease, represented a crucial advance in the evolution of artificial organs. While its success is largely due to its efficiency in removing uremic toxins, an equally important challenge is to uphold the primum non nocere principle by minimizing the harmful effects of membrane-blood interactions. This review examines the complex mechanisms and key interactions underlying membrane biocompatibility, including complement activation, inflammation, and coagulation disturbances, paving the way for their clinical implications. We also summarize r

Arachidonic acid suppresses lung cancer cell growth and modulates lipid metabolism and the ERK/PPARγ signaling pathway.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, necessitating the development of new treatment strategies. Arachidonic acid (ARA), a polyunsaturated fatty acid, shows promise in cancer therapy due to its potential anti-tumor effects, although its role in lung cancer remains unclear. This study investigated the effects and underlying mechanism of ARA on A549 and NCI-H1299 lung cancer cells. In vitro assays were used to assess cell viability, apoptosis, colony formation, lipid droplet formation, and changes in cellular lipid content. ARA dose-dependently suppressed c
