Mass drug administration coverage and its determinants for the elimination of onchocerciasis in Ulanga District, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Onchocerciasis remains an important public health problem targeted for elimination in Tanzania. Ulanga District was hyperendemic for onchocerciasis before the intervention, underscoring the need for particularly high coverage in MDA efforts. The district has been implementing MDA through Community Directed Treatment with Ivermectin (CDTI) strategy since 1998. However, there is preliminary evidence of persistent onchocerciasis transmission, which likely sustains the observed high prevalence of Onchocerciasis in both human and vector species. This could be linked to poor treatment co

Differences in the prevalence and patterns of dementia risk factors across 14 countries and regions: a harmonised cross-national analysis.

BACKGROUND: The design of evidence-based interventions to reduce the burden of dementia requires knowledge of the prevalence and patterns of modifiable risk factors. However, most existing evidence comes from high-income countries (HICs). Hence, we aimed to quantify differences in the prevalence and patterns of dementia risk factors across diverse contexts. METHODS: We conducted a comparative cross-sectional study using harmonised data from 14 countries and regions (Ireland, the USA, England, Northern Ireland, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Northern Europe, Southern Europe, South Korea, Mexi

Risks of infectious disease hospitalisations in the aftermath of tropical cyclones: a multi-country time-series study.

BACKGROUND: The proportion of intense tropical cyclones is expected to increase in a changing climate. However, there is currently no consistent and comprehensive assessment of infectious disease risk following tropical cyclone exposure across countries and over decades. We aimed to explore the tropical cyclone-associated hospitalisation risks and burden for cause-specific infectious diseases on a multi-country scale. METHODS: Hospitalisation records for infectious diseases were collected from six countries and territories (Canada, South Korea, New Zealand, Taiwan, Thailand, and Viet Nam) dur

A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of an Integrated In-person and Mobile Phone Delivered Counseling and Text Messaging Intervention to Reduce HIV Transmission Risk among Male Sex Workers in Chennai, India.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at increased risk for HIV infection in India, particularly those who engage in transactional sex with other men (i.e., male sex workers; MSW). Despite the need, HIV prevention efforts for Indian MSW are lacking. As in other settings, MSW in India increasingly rely on the use of mobile phones for sex work solicitation. Integrating mobile phone technology into an HIV prevention intervention for Indian MSW may mitigate some of the challenges associated with face-to face approaches, such as implementation, lack of anonymity, and time consumption, while at the sa

Risk of ectopic pregnancy lowest with transfer of single frozen blastocyst.

STUDY QUESTION: What type of transferred embryo is associated with a lower rate of ectopic pregnancy? SUMMARY ANSWER: The lowest risk of ectopic pregnancy was associated with the transfer of blastocyst, frozen and single embryo compared with cleavage stage, fresh and multiple embryos. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Ectopic pregnancy is a recognized complication following assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment. It has been estimated that the rate of ectopic pregnancy is doubled in pregnancies following ART treatment compared with spontaneous pregnancies. However, it was not clear whether th

Repeated use of pre- and postcoital hormonal contraception for prevention of pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Repeated use of postcoital hormonal contraception is not currently recommended due to the higher risk of side effects and lower contraceptive effectiveness compared to other modern methods of contraception. However, emerging evidence indicates renewed interest in a regular coitally-dependent method of oral contraception. We evaluated the existing data on safety and effectiveness of pericoital use of levonorgestrel and other hormonal drugs to prevent pregnancy. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness and safety of repeated use of pre- and postcoital hormonal contraception for pr

Pre-medication to block [(18)F]FDG uptake in the brown adipose tissue of pediatric and adolescent patients.

BACKGROUND: Radiopharmaceutical uptake of [(18)F]2-deoxy-2-glucose (FDG) in brown adipose tissue is noted on 15-20% of positron emission tomography (PET) scans in children and adolescents. One report suggests that moderate-dose oral diazepam can partly or completely block FDG uptake in brown adipose tissue. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether [(18)F]FDG uptake in brown adipose tissue can be adequately blocked by pre-medication other than moderate-dose oral diazepam. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and eighteen [(18)F]FDG PET body imaging studies were performed in 69 pediatric patients with a

Automatic detection and classification of treatment deviations in proton therapy from realistically simulated prompt gamma imaging data.

BACKGROUND: A clinical study regarding the potential of range verification in proton therapy (PT) by prompt gamma imaging (PGI) is carried out at our institution. Manual interpretation of the detected spot-wise range shift information is time-consuming, highly complex, and therefore not feasible in a broad routine application. PURPOSE: Here, we present an approach to automatically detect and classify treatment deviations in realistically simulated PGI data for head-and-neck cancer (HNC) treatments using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and conventional machine learning (ML) approaches. Daily mortality and fine and ultrafine particles in Erfurt, Germany part I: role of particle number and particle mass.

Increases in morbidity and mortality have been observed consistently and coherently in association with ambient air pollution. A number of studies on short-term effects have identified ambient particles as a major pollutant in urban air. This study, conducted in Erfurt, Germany, investigated the association of mortality not only with ambient particles but also with gaseous pollutants and indicators of sources. Part I of this study concentrates on particles. Data were collected prospectively over a 3.5-year period from September 1995 to December 1998. Death certificates were obtained from the l
