Phytic acid is an available phosphorus source for maize plants in juvenile phase belonging to two populations with different breeding backgrounds.

BACKGROUND: Applying animal effluent/digestate to forage crops can improve the sustainability of intensive livestock husbandry. Organic phosphorus (P) forms, in particular phytic acid (InsP6) present in animal effluent/digestate, would benefit from an effective uptake and assimilation by crops thus representing an alternative to mineral P fertilization and controlling P losses in water system. A maize (Zea mays L.) traditional Italian population (VA572), bred before the widespread diffusion of crop chemical fertilization, and a modern commercial hybrid (P1547) were used in this study to invest

Evaluation of Trichoderma bio-control agents and pre-cultivation seed treatments for the control of Cephalosporium maydis causing late wilt in maize (Zea mays L.).

BACKGROUND: Late wilt disease, caused by Cephalosporium maydis, is one of the most aggressive fungal diseases threatening maize production in Egypt and Mediterranean region. Biological control and pre-cultivation seed treatments are proposed among the best strategies to control C. maydis under greenhouse and field conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Trichoderma bio-control agents as well as several pre-cultivation seed treatments (priming and coating) in controlling late wilt disease and improving maize production. Five isolates of C. maydis were isolat

Analyses of 37 composts revealed microbial taxa associated with disease suppressiveness.

UNLABELLED: Compost is a valuable amendment for soil and potting substrate when it comes to suppressing soilborne pathogens. However, the effectiveness of different composts varies and cannot yet be predicted. Microbial communities in compost play a key role in disease suppression, and therefore their composition or specific taxa may serve as indicators of suppressive composts. In this study, we investigated 37 composts from 7 commercial compost producers to analyze the association of their bacterial and fungal communities with suppressive activity in three plant-pathogen systems: cress-Globis

Development of Novel KASP Markers for Improved Germination in Deep-Sown Direct Seeded Rice.

BACKGROUND: The lack of stable-high yielding and direct-seeded adapted varieties with better germination ability from deeper soil depth and availability of molecular markers are major limitation in achieving the maximum yield potential of rice under water and resource limited conditions. Development of high-throughput and trait-linked markers are of great interest in genomics-assisted breeding. The aim of present study was to develop and validate novel KASP (Kompetitive Allele-Specific PCR) markers associated with traits improving germination and seedling vigor of deep sown direct seeded rice

Effect of Different Salts on Nutrients Uptake, Gene Expression, Antioxidant, and Growth Pattern of Selected Rice Genotypes.

Climate change leads to soil salinization, and the dynamic scarcity of freshwater has negatively affected crop production worldwide, especially Oryza sativa. The association among ion uptake, gene expression, antioxidant, biomass, and root and shoot development under different salt stress are not fully understood. Many studies are related to the effect of NaCl only. This study used two salts (CaCl2 and MgCl2) along with NaCl and analyzed their effects on mineral uptake (macronutrients and micronutrients), gene expression, seed germination, antioxidants, plant growth, and biomass in different r

Biofertilizer Based on Biochar and Metal-Tolerant Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria Alleviates Copper Impact on Morphophysiological Traits in Brassica napus L.

Metal tolerant plant growth-promoting (PGP) rhizobacteria are promising for enhancing plant productivity under copper (Cu) stress. Present pot scale experiment was conducted on Brassica napus L. to check the efficiency of rhizobacteria isolated from the rhizosphere of Tussilago farfara L. growing on Cu-contaminated soils. Out of fifty Cu tolerant strains, three isolates which showed multiple PGP traits such as indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) synthesis, phosphate (PS) solubilization, siderophore and ammonia production were identified preliminarily by morphological and physiological characteristics f

The Gladstone (Australia) oil spill - impacts on intertidal areas: baseline and six months post-spill.

In January 2006, 25 tonnes of heavy fuel oil spilled into the Port of Gladstone in Queensland, Australia, from the breached hull of a bulk carrier ship. While approximately 18 tonnes of the oil was recovered, a certain amount of oil was deposited in the intertidal areas of Port Curtis leaving a highly visible, viscous residue. The objectives of this research were to assess the short-term (one month post-spill) and medium-term (six months post-spill) impacts on the intertidal habitat. Sediment polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metal concentrations, mangrove communities and intertidal

Early detection and genetic insights into salt tolerance in rice by linking physiology and spectral reflectance during seed germination.

Soil salinization threatens global agriculture, and seed germination is especially salt-sensitive. Although seed imbibition is a critical early phase, salt responses during this stage remain poorly understood. Reliance on final morphological traits limits nondestructive early phenotyping, thereby hindering efficient screening and mechanistic insight. To overcome this limitation, we integrated continuous physiological measurements with hyperspectral data to model dynamic responses of key indicators and further leveraged hyperspectral-derived traits for early prediction and genetic dissection of

GmFIP37, a core m6A methyltransferase in soybean (Glycine max), confers salt and drought tolerance via synergistic regulation of m6A modification and antioxidant-osmolyte homeostasis.

RNA N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification, the most abundant epigenetic modification in eukaryotic mRNAs, regulates gene expression via modulating mRNA translation, degradation, and other post-transcriptional processes, and is critical for plant growth, development, and abiotic stress responses. Soybean (Glycine max), a globally vital food and oil crop, suffers severe yield and quality losses under salt and drought stresses; however, the functions of m6A regulatory genes, especially methyltransferases, in soybean abiotic stress responses remain largely uncharacterized. In this study, four GmFI

Functional Analysis of LTS-PYL in Modulating Plant Drought Responses.

Drought severely limits plant productivity, and understanding its regulatory mechanisms remains essential. Here, we characterize Lipid Transport Superfamily-Polyketide cyclase/dehydrase (LTS-PYL), a PYR/PYL/RCAR-domain gene, using Arabidopsis overexpression and CRISPR-Cas9 genome-edited lines to elucidate its role in drought adaptation. LTS-PYL overexpression enhanced early seedling growth, increasing root length (RL) by 40% and 31%, whereas genome-edited lines exhibited severe defects, including 42%, 28% reductions in fresh weight and 63%, 50% decreases in root length relative to WT-T. Post-harvest cleaning, sanitization, and microbial monitoring of soilless nutrient delivery systems for sustainable space crop production.

Bioregenerative food systems that routinely produce fresh, safe-to-eat crops onboard spacecraft can supplement the nutrition and variety of shelf-stable spaceflight food systems for use during future exploration missions (i.e., low earth orbit, Mars transit, lunar, and Martian habitats). However, current space crop production systems are not yet sustainable because they primarily utilize consumable granular media and, to date, operate like single crop cycle, space biology experiments where root modules are sanitized prior to launch and discarded after each grow-out. Moreover, real-time detecti

Toxicity of Bacillus thuringiensis Strains Derived from the Novel Crystal Protein Cry31Aa with High Nematicidal Activity against Rice Parasitic Nematode Aphelenchoides besseyi.

The plant parasitic nematode, Aphelenchoides besseyi, is a serious pest causing severe damage to various crop plants and vegetables. The Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) strains, GBAC46 and NMTD81, and the biological strain, FZB42, showed higher nematicidal activity against A. besseyi, by up to 88.80, 82.65, and 75.87%, respectively, in a 96-well plate experiment. We screened the whole genomes of the selected strains by protein-nucleic acid alignment. It was found that the Bt strain GBAC46 showed three novel crystal proteins, namely, Cry31Aa, Cry73Aa, and Cry40ORF, which likely provide for the safe

Companion planting with French marigolds protects tomato plants from glasshouse whiteflies through the emission of airborne limonene.

Horticulturalists and gardeners in temperate regions often claim that planting marigolds next to tomato plants protects the tomatoes from the glasshouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood). If shown to hold true, this technique could be used in larger-scale tomato production, protecting the crop and helping to introduce greater plant diversity into these agro-ecosystems. Here we present two large-scale glasshouse trials corresponding to the two main ways growers are likely to use marigolds to control whiteflies. In the first, marigolds are grown next to tomato throughout the growing

Seed Coating: A Tool for Delivering Beneficial Microbes to Agricultural Crops.

Plant beneficial microbes (PBMs), such as plant growth-promoting bacteria, rhizobia, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and Trichoderma, can reduce the use of agrochemicals and increase plant yield, nutrition, and tolerance to biotic-abiotic stresses. Yet, large-scale applications of PBM have been hampered by the high amounts of inoculum per plant or per cultivation area needed for successful colonization and consequently the economic feasibility. Seed coating, a process that consists in covering seeds with low amounts of exogenous materials, is gaining attention as an efficient delivery system for

Interaction of endophytic microbes with legumes.

Large numbers of bacterial and fungal endophytes have been reported from different plant tissues: roots, nodules, leaves, flowers and sprouts of legumes, with numbers ranging from few to more than 150. Endophytes can accelerate seedling emergence, promote plant establishment under adverse conditions and enhance plant growth. Endophytic microbes promote plant growth by helping plants in acquiring nutrients, e.g. via nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilization or iron chelation, by preventing pathogen infections via antifungal or antibacterial agents, by outcompeting pathogens for nutrients by s

Oxidative defence reactions in sunflower roots induced by methyl-jasmonate and methyl-salicylate and their relation with calcium signalling.

Ca(2+) plays a critical role as second messenger in the signal-response coupling of plant defence responses, and methyl-jasmonate and methyl-salicylate are important components of signal transduction cascades activating plant defences. When intact axenic non-induced seedling roots of sunflower were treated with different Ca(2+) concentrations up to 1 mM, there was no significant increase in O(2)(*-) generation or DMAB-MBTH peroxidase (extracellular, ECPOX) activities in the apoplast, probably because these roots had enough Ca(2+) in their exo- and endocellular reservoirs. Both activities were

Solute content and energy status of roots of barley plants cultivated at different pH on nitrate- or ammonium-nitrogen.

Barley seedlings (Hordeum vulgare cv. 'Gaulois') were precultured hydroponically for 4d on nutrient solutions with nitrate (3 mM) as N-source at pH 4.7, and were then transferred to solutions with ammonium or nitrate as N-source (3 mM), buffered and adjusted to different pH (4.0, 5.5, 6.8). Variations in shoot and root growth and solute contents were examined and grouped into pH-effects, ammonium effects and interactions. Shoot biomass was not affected under all conditions. Root fresh weight was insensitive to the external pH when nitrate was the N-source, but was drastically affected by a com

OsNPR1 negatively regulates herbivore-induced JA and ethylene signaling and plant resistance to a chewing herbivore in rice.

NPR1 (a non-expressor of pathogenesis-related genes1) has been reported to play an important role in plant defense by regulating signaling pathways. However, little to nothing is known about its function in herbivore-induced defense in monocot plants. Here, using suppressive substrate hybridization, we identified a NPR1 gene from rice, OsNPR1, and found that its expression levels were upregulated in response to infestation by the rice striped stem borer (SSB) Chilo suppressalis and rice leaf folder (LF) Cnaphalocrocis medinalis, and to mechanical wounding and treatment with jasmonic acid (JA)

Salicylic acid negatively affects the response to salt stress in pea plants.

We studied the effect of salicylic acid (SA) treatment on the response of pea plants to salinity. Sodium chloride (NaCl)-induced damage to leaves was increased by SA, which was correlated with a reduction in plant growth. The content of reduced ascorbate and glutathione in leaves of salt-treated plants increased in response to SA, although accumulation of the respective oxidised forms occurred. An increase in hydrogen peroxide also occurred in leaves of salt-exposed plants treated with SA. In the absence of NaCl, SA increased ascorbate peroxidase (APX; 100 μm) and glutathione-S transferase (GS
