The detection of various opiates and benzodiazepines by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometry.

A technique using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC x GC/TOFMS) is applied to qualitative and quantitative drug testing. Human serum was 'spiked' with known quantities of benzodiazepines and a 'street heroin' mixture including some of the major metabolites and impurities. The sample components were extracted from the matrix by solid-phase extraction (SPE). Constituents containing polar hydroxyl and/or secondary amine groups were derivatised with N-methyl-N-(tert-butyldimethyl)trifluoroacetamide (MTBSTFA) to improve the chromatographic perform

Current application of confocal endomicroscopy in gastrointestinal disorders.

Confocal endomicroscopy (CEM) is a recent advancement in imaging technology that incorporates a confocal laser microscope into the tip of a flexible endoscope. The 1000-fold magnification and high resolution allows for real time in vivo histology or "virtual biopsies" of the gastrointestinal tract mucosa. CEM has the capability to instantaneously diagnose intra-epithelial neoplasia during endoscopy, alone or in combination with a "red-flag" technique, such as chromoendoscopy. Therefore, there is clinical utility in the surveillance or diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus, gastric intestinal metapl

Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Interactome with 364 Novel Protein-Protein Interactions.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive cancer affecting the outer lining of the lung, with a median survival of less than one year. We constructed an 'MPM interactome' with over 300 computationally predicted protein-protein interactions (PPIs) and over 2400 known PPIs of 62 literature-curated genes whose activity affects MPM. Known PPIs of the 62 MPM associated genes were derived from Biological General Repository for Interaction Datasets (BioGRID) and Human Protein Reference Database (HPRD). Novel PPIs were predicted by applying the HiPPIP algorithm, which computes features of

RNA CoMPASS: a dual approach for pathogen and host transcriptome analysis of RNA-seq datasets.

High-throughput RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) has become an instrumental assay for the analysis of multiple aspects of an organism's transcriptome. Further, the analysis of a biological specimen's associated microbiome can also be performed using RNA-seq data and this application is gaining interest in the scientific community. There are many existing bioinformatics tools designed for analysis and visualization of transcriptome data. Despite the availability of an array of next generation sequencing (NGS) analysis tools, the analysis of RNA-seq data sets poses a challenge for many biomedical resear

Multi-class mental Task Classification based Brain-Computer Interface using Improved Remora depthwise convolutional adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference network model.

BACKGROUND: Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) offer a promising avenue for individuals with severe motor disabilities to interact with the world. By decoding brain signals, BCIs can enable users to control devices and communicate thoughts. However, challenges such as noise in EEG signals and limited data availability hinder the development of accurate and reliable BCI systems. Nonetheless, problems persist, including limited data availability, noisy EEG signals, real-time performance limitations, and reduced classification accuracy. NEW METHOD: To overcome this, the present work proposes an ef

Pain Chemogenomics Knowledgebase (Pain-CKB) for Systems Pharmacology Target Mapping and Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic Modeling Investigation of Opioid Drug-Drug Interactions.

More than 50 million adults in America suffer from chronic pain. Opioids are commonly prescribed for their effectiveness in relieving many types of pain. However, excessive prescribing of opioids can lead to abuse, addiction, and death. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), another major class of analgesic, also have many problematic side effects including headache, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, constipation, reduced appetite, and drowsiness. There is an urgent need for the understanding of molecular mechanisms that underlie drug abuse and addiction to aid in the design of n

Evaluation of preoperative model surgery and the use of a maxillary sinus surgical template in sinus floor augmentation surgery.

Maxillary sinus augmentation is an accepted technique for dental implant placement in presence of insufficient maxillary bone. There are various techniques in the literature, either by crestal or lateral approach in maxillary sinus augmentation that have high percentage of success, while all have complications. Schneiderian membrane perforation is the most common complication encountered during surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the benefits of preoperative model surgery and the ease of use of a maxillary sinus surgical template (MSST) during maxillary sinus augmentation surgery wi

Surgical navigation in cranio-maxillofacial surgery: an evaluation on a child with a cranio-facio-orbital tumour.

Surgical navigation, though well-established, is often associated with extra effort for both patient and surgeon, and with additional exposure to radiation as a result of the necessary extra imaging. Osteoblastoma is a benign bone tumour, malignant transformation of which is rare but possible, and so resection is indicated. The orbit with surrounding structures is a challenging region for accurate three-dimensional reconstruction. A virtual plan based on the patient's mirrored anatomy realised by intraoperative navigation can assist in achieving perfect results. An 8-year-old boy presented wit

Use of the matching optimal symmetry plane method in planning surgical correction of facial asymmetry--a preliminary report of 20 patients.

PURPOSE: A voxel-based median plane (optimal symmetry plane [OSP]) was developed to assess facial bone asymmetry. The purpose of the present study was to introduce a new method of planning surgical correction of facial asymmetry using the OSPs as guides and test its effectiveness. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted of 20 facial asymmetry patients with a mandibular deviation of 4 mm or greater or 4° or more that required surgical correction. In the test group (n = 8), the plans for asymmetry correction were formulated using the matching OSP method, in which the OSPs of t

Computer-assisted virtual technology in intracapsular condylar fracture with two resorbable long-screws.

Our aim was to fix intracapsular condylar fractures (ICF) with two resorbable long screws using preoperative computer-assisted virtual technology. From February 2008 to July 2011, 19 patients with ICF were treated with two resorbable long screws. Preoperatively we took panoramic radiographs and spiral computed tomography (CT). Depending on their digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) data, the dislocated condylar segments were restored using the SimPlant Pro™ software, version 11.04. The mean (SD) widths of the condylar head and neck from lateral to medial were 19.01 (1.28)mm a

Virtual bronchoscopy for directing transbronchial needle aspiration of hilar and mediastinal lymph nodes: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: We conducted a preliminary investigation of virtual bronchoscopy as a guide for transbronchial needle aspiration of hilar or mediastinal lymph nodes to assess the usefulness of this technique. CONCLUSION: Virtual bronchoscopic images derived from routine helical CT scans were useful for directing transbronchial needle aspiration in a clinical setting. In addition, virtual bronchoscopy may have been responsible for improving the yield of transbronchial needle aspirations done by our bronchoscopists when 22-gauge needles were used.

Multiplanar and three-dimensional reconstruction techniques in CT: impact on chest diseases.

The purpose of this review is to capture the current state-of-the art of the technical aspects of multiplanar and three-dimensional (3D) images and their thoracic applications. Planimetric and volumetric analysis resulting from volumetric data acquisitions obviates the limitations of segmented transverse images. Among the 3D reconstruction techniques currently available, the most recently introduced technique, i. e., volume rendering, has to be evaluated in comparison with 3D shaded surface display and maximum or minimum intensity projection. Slabs are useful in detecting and localizing micron

Maxillary ridge augmentation with custom-made CAD/CAM scaffolds. A 1-year prospective study on 10 patients.

Several procedures have been proposed to achieve maxillary ridge augmentation. These require bone replacement materials to be manually cut, shaped, and formed at the time of implantation, resulting in an expensive and time-consuming process. In the present study, we describe a technique for the design and fabrication of custom-made scaffolds for maxillary ridge augmentation, using three-dimensional computerized tomography (3D CT) and computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM). CT images of the atrophic maxillary ridge of 10 patients were acquired and modified into 3D reconstr

Computer-aided design and manufacturing in craniomaxillofacial surgery: the new state of the art.

The goal of this article was to illustrate the ease in which virtual surgery and computer-aided design and manufacturing can be used by the craniomaxillofacial surgeon to create tremendously accurate postoperative results and provide confidence with even the most complex three-dimensional bony reconstructions. With advancements in software technology and three-dimensional printing, our ability to plan and execute precise bony reconstruction has become a reality. With this technology, guides can be made to ensure exact bony repositioning or replacement. These guides can help guide cutting of th

Customized titanium reconstruction of post-traumatic orbital wall defects: a review of 22 cases.

The authors present the clinical results of their method of customized reconstruction of orbital wall defects using titanium mesh or sheet. High resolution computed tomography (CT) data are imported and processed to create a three-dimensional (3D) image which is used to reconstruct the orbital defect. Mirror imaging of the air in the contralateral maxillary sinus is used to overcome artefact defects in the floor. A stereolithographic model is constructed, from which titanium mesh or sheet is shaped and sized to the required contours for implantation. Twenty-two patients were treated using this
