Assessment of Heavy Metal Accumulation in Wastewater-Receiving Soil-Exotic and Indigenous Vegetable Systems and Its Potential Health Risks: A Case Study from Blantyre, Malawi.

Urban and peri-urban farmers in Malawi increasingly use treated and untreated wastewater for vegetable production, but little is known about the extent of heavy metal accumulation in both exotic and indigenous vegetables, particularly with respect to differences between edible tissues (leaves vs. stems). This study addresses this gap by measuring the concentrations of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) in wastewater, soils, and six vegetables including three exotic and three indigenous irrigated with effluent from the Soche Wastewater Treatment Plant in Blantyre

Mechanisms Underlying Iron Deficiency-Induced Cardiac Disorders: Implications for Treatment.

Two billion people worldwide suffer from anemia, which can lead to the onset of cardiac disorders; nevertheless, the precise mechanisms remain unclear. There are at least three distinct mechanisms by which iron deficiency (ID) contributes to the development of cardiac disorders. First, ID increases concentrations of intact fibroblast growth factor-23 (iFGF-23), which promotes left ventricular hypertrophy. Additionally, individuals with ID typically have low circulating levels of vitamin D and an increased body burden of cadmium (Cd). Both factors-high Cd levels and a lack of vitamin D-elevate

Occurrence, ecological risk assessment and prioritization of pharmaceuticals and abuse drugs in estuarine waters along the São Paulo coast, Brazil.

The pollution of the surface waters by pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) has attracted worldwide attention, but data regarding their occurrence and potential risks for the aquatic biota on tropical coastal rivers of South America are still scarce. In this context, the occurrence and the preliminary ecological risk assessment of eleven pharmaceuticals of various therapeutic classes (including cocaine and its primary metabolite, benzoylecgonine) were investigated, for the first time, in five rivers of São Paulo, southeast Brazil, covering a coastline of about 140 km, namely Pere

Influence of microplastics on the toxicity of the pharmaceuticals procainamide and doxycycline on the marine microalgae Tetraselmis chuii.

Microplastics and pharmaceuticals are considered ubiquitous and emergent pollutants of high concern but the knowledge on their effects on primary producers is still limited, especially those caused by mixtures. Thus, the goal of the present study was to investigate if the presence of microplastics (1-5 μm diameter) influences the toxicity of the pharmaceuticals procainamide and doxycycline to the marine microalga Tetraselmis chuii. Bioassays (96 h) to investigate the toxicity of those substances individually and in mixtures (i.e. microplastics-procainamide mixtures and microplastics-doxycyclin

Determination of mercury in fish otoliths by cold vapor generation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (CVG-ICP-MS).

A method based on cold vapor generation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (CVG-ICP-MS) has been developed for determination of inorganic mercury, Hg(II), and total mercury in fish otoliths. Sodium borohydride (NaBH(4)) was used as the only reducing agent and its concentration was optimized across an acidity gradient to selectively reduce Hg(II) without affecting methylmercury, CH(3)Hg(I). Inorganic Hg was quantitatively reduced to elemental mercury (Hg(0)) with 1 × 10(-4)% (m/v) NaBH(4). CH(3)Hg(I) required a minimum of 0.5% (m/v) NaBH(4) for complete reduction. Increasing the HCl c

Mercury in 16 demersal sharks from southeast Australia: Biotic and abiotic sources of variation and consumer health implications.

Total mercury (THg) and monomethylmercury (MMHg) concentrations were determined in the tissues of demersal shark (Order Squaliformes and the Families: Scyliorhinidae, Hexanchidae) and chimaera species (Families: Chimaeridae and Rhinochimaeridae) from continental shelf and slope waters off southeast Australia, including embryos, juveniles and adults. The distribution of THg in various tissues (muscle, liver, kidney and skin), examined in ten species, shows higher levels in the muscle tissue (1.49+/-0.47mgkg(-1), ww), which accounted for between 59% and 82% of the total body burden of mercury an

Toxic effects of new antifouling compounds on tunicate haemocytes I. Sea-nine 211 and chlorothalonil.

After the definitive ban on tin-based antifouling substances, new organic compounds have recently been introduced in antifouling paint formulations, as either principal or booster biocides. In most cases, previous risk assessment of these biocides has been inadequate so that their possible effects on aquatic ecosystems is a matter of great concern. We studied the effects of two new organic biocides often associated in paint formulations, Sea-Nine 211 (4,5 dichloro-2-n-octyl-4-isothiazoline-3-one) and chlorothalonil (2,4,5,6-tetrachloroisophthalonitrile), on haemocytes of the compound ascidian

Sustainable nanohybrids for environmental remediation: Green synthesis, mechanistic design, AI-driven optimization, and circular economy perspectives.

Environmental pollution, driven by industrialization, urbanization, and intensive agriculture, has unleashed a cascade of hazardous contaminants, heavy metals, synthetic dyes, persistent organic pollutants, and emerging micropollutants, into air, water, and soil. These agents pose profound risks to ecosystems and human health due to their toxicity, bioaccumulation, and resilience to natural degradation. Conventional remediation methods, though partially effective, are often hindered by high costs, poor selectivity, secondary pollution, and excessive energy demands. In response, the development

From Stable to Table: Tracing the "Forever Chemical" Vector Through the Food Animal Supply Chain.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) represent a formidable class of persistent synthetic chemicals whose contamination of the global food supply, particularly through animal products, constitutes a major and direct route of human exposure. This review synthesizes the current scientific understanding of PFAS entry into food animal production systems including livestock, poultry, and aquaculture via contaminated feed, water, and soil. We detail the subsequent toxicokinetics in animals, which lead to pronounced tissue-specific bioaccumulation. Two distinct and non-interchangeable rankings

Transforming soil decontamination: the role and prospects of nanotechnological remediation.

Soil pollution, driven by industrialization and intensive agriculture, poses critical risks and global threats, with over 16% of global soils estimated to be contaminated by heavy metals, organic pollutants, and pesticides. This is impacting ecosystems, food security, and human health through bioaccumulation and carcinogenicity. Conventional remediation methods are often costly, destructive, and insufficient for deep and heterogenous contamination, often generating secondary waste and require long time for treatment. Nanotechnology introduces a paradigm shift, leveraging nanomaterials with hig

Multifaceted assessment of the content of potentially toxic elements and microplastics in the sargassum habitats of Caribbean beaches, Mexico.

The present study aimed to evaluate potentially toxic elements (PTEs) (Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Li, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, S, Se, Sr, Tl, Zn) in sargassum habitats at two distinct sites: Puerto Morelos (PM) and Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve (SK) along the Mexican Caribbean coast. Median dissolved concentrations of S (1937.8 mg/L), Mg (1172.5 mg/L), and Ca (408.7 mg/L) were relatively higher than those of other elements studied. Similarly, elemental concentrations in sediment followed an order of Ca > Mg > Sr > S > Fe > Al > B > Ba > Mn > Cr > Se > Cu > As > Zn > Pb > Tl > Li > Ni > C

The role of endoplasmic reticulum stress-mediated autophagy in cadmium-induced liver injury in rats.

Cadmium (Cd) is a widespread toxicant with high bioaccumulation potential. This study explores the interplay of endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS), autophagy, and apoptosis in Cd-induced hepatotoxicity, focusing on whether ERS-driven autophagy protects against liver injury. Male SD rats (4 weeks old, n = 24) were acclimatized for 7 days and randomized into four groups receiving CdCl₂ at doses of 0, 0.5, 1, or 2 mg/kg for 14 consecutive days. A second cohort (n = 36) was similarly allocated to six groups: control, Cd, 4-PBA, Cd + 4-PBA, CQ and Cd + CQ. All treatments were administered via daily

Integrating multi-omics and network toxicology to identify FIS1 as a key target of environmental pollutants in male infertility.

BACKGROUND: Male infertility (MI) impacts about one in seven couples globally, involving complex gene-environment interactions. Environmental pollutants may disrupt spermatogenesis via mitochondrial dysfunction, but key targets and mechanisms are unclear. Integrating multi-omics with computational toxicology offers a novel strategy to decipher these interactions. METHODS: We integrated blood transcriptomics from MI patients, GWAS summary statistics, and QTL data (methylation, expression, protein). MI-related mitochondrial genes were identified through differential expression analysis, followe

Impact of climate change on arsenic concentrations in paddy rice and the associated dietary health risks in Asia: an experimental and modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Rising global atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and surface temperatures could negatively affect rice yields and nutritional quality; however, their effects on arsenic accumulation in paddy rice have not been assessed concurrently. We aimed to assess the impact of increases in CO2 and temperature (individually and in combination) on arsenic concentrations in rice, characterise soil properties that might influence arsenic uptake, and model the associated risks of cancer and other health outcomes due to increased arsenic exposure. METHODS: For this modelling study we p

First Insights Into Within Host Translocation of the Bacillus cereus Toxin Cereulide Using a Porcine Model.

Bacillus cereus is a gram-positive pathogen mainly known to evoke two types of foodborne poisonings. The diarrheal syndrome is caused by enterotoxins produced during growth in the intestine. In contrast, the emetic type is caused by the dodecadepsipeptide cereulide pre-formed in food. Usually, both diseases are self-limiting but occasionally more severe forms, including fatal ones, are reported. Since the mechanisms of cereulide toxin uptake and translocation within the body as well as the mechanism of its toxic action are still unknown, we used a porcine model to investigate the uptake, route
