Headgear versus function regulator in the early treatment of Class II, division 1 malocclusion: a randomized clinical trial.

A prospective randomized clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the early treatment of Class II, Division 1 malocclusion in prepubertal children. Facial and occlusal changes after treatment with either a headgear or a Fränkel function regulator are reported. Molar and canine relationships, overjet, intermolar and intercanine distances were measured from casts taken every 2 months, and mounted on a SAM II articulator. Cephalometric radiographs were taken annually. The results indicate that both the headgear and function regulator were effective in correcting the malocclusion. A common mode of

Reduced need for alveolar bone grafting by presurgical orthopedics and primary gingivoperiosteoplasty.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate if narrowing and approximation of the alveolar cleft through presurgical alveolar molding followed by gingivoperiosteoplasty (GPP) at the time of lip repair reduces the need for a bone-grafting procedure. DESIGN: This was a retrospective blind study of patients with unilateral or bilateral alveolar clefts who underwent presurgical infant alveolar molding and GPP by a single surgeon. Alveolar bone formation was assessed prior to the eruption of the maxillary lateral incisor or canine by clinical examination, panoramic and periapical radiogra

Influence of maxillary canine impaction characteristics and factors associated with orthodontic treatment on the duration of active orthodontic traction.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic traction of a maxillary impacted canine (MIC) increases the orthodontic treatment time. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of MIC characteristics and factors associated with orthodontic treatment on the duration of active orthodontic traction. METHODS: This follow-up and retrospective study included 45 MICs orthodontically tractioned into the occlusal plane with the use of a standardized protocol. MIC characteristics, including type, sector, side, location, height, and complexity of impaction, as well as α and β angles and canine roo

A comparison of three-dimensional stress distribution and displacement of naso-maxillary complex on application of forces using quad-helix and nickel titanium palatal expander 2 (NPE2): a FEM study.

BACKGROUND: Our objectives are to analyse and to compare the stress distribution and displacement of the craniofacial structures, following the application of forces from quad-helix and Nickel Titanium Palatal Expander-2 (NPE2) using finite element analysis. METHODS: Three-dimensional finite element models of young dried human skull, quad-helix appliance and NPE2 were constructed, and the initial activation of the expanders was stimulated to carry out the analysis and to evaluate the Von Misses stresses and displacement. RESULTS: Both the models demonstrated the highest stresses at the mid-p

Presurgical and postsurgical orthodontics are associated with superior secondary alveolar bone grafting outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the popularity and well-established procedures of secondary alveolar bone grafting (SABG), not all SABG surgeries are successful. To determine the factors related to SABG success, we investigated the radiographic outcomes of SABG and its association with a wide range of factors (e.g., demographics, surgeon, presurgical and postsurgical cleft status). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients (N = 77, 9-12 years of age) with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate had been treated with SABG. Their postoperative cone-beam computed tomographic scans were analyzed for residual cleft d

Should oral implants be splinted in a mandibular implant-supported fixed complete denture? A 3-dimensional-model finite element analysis.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The design of a mandibular fixed complete denture can influence periimplant bone loss. However, the design that transfers the greatest stress to the periimplant bone is not well documented. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the stress distribution associated with splinted and nonsplinted implant-supported mandibular fixed complete denture designs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three-dimensional finite element models simulating 6 osseointegrated implants were created in the mandible to support a cobalt-chromium alloy and feldspathic porcelain veneering framework.

Effect of a crown ferrule on the fracture strength of endodontically treated canines restored with fiber posts and metal-ceramic or all-ceramic crowns.

The aim of this study was to comparatively evaluate the fracture strength of endodontically treated canines restored with glass-fiber posts (GFPs) and either metal-ceramic (MC) or all-ceramic (AC) crowns in the presence or absence of 2 mm of ferrule height. Fifty human maxillary canines were endodontically treated and randomly divided into five groups of 10 specimens each. The first group remained intact (control), while the remainder were restored with GFPs and composite cores with either MC or AC crowns. Each of the AC and MC groups was equally divided between teeth with or without ferrule.

Osseous and dental outcomes of primary gingivoperiosteoplasty with iliac bone graft: A radiological evaluation.

Primary alveolar cleft repair has two main purposes: to restore normal morphology and normal function. Gingivoperiosteoplasty with bone grafting in mixed dentition has been a well-established procedure. We hypothesized that 1) performance of this surgery in deciduous dentition would provide favorable bone graft osseointegration, and 2) would improve the support of incisor teeth eruption, thereby avoiding maxillary growth disturbances. We conducted a retrospective study of clinical and tridimensional radiological data for 73 patients with alveolar clefts (with or without lip and palate clefts)
