A review of vertebral and carotid angiograms in 59 cases of third ventricular pathology demonstrated that the anterior thalamoperforating arteries are affected primarily by obstructive dilatation of the third ventricle, dilatation of the third ventricle secondary to atrophy, intra third ventricular tumors, anterior and para third ventricular tumors, and hypothalamic and thalamic tumors. The posterior thalamoperforating arteries are affected primarily by midbrain atrophy, midbrain tumors, and thalamic tumors. The primary and secondary effects have been outlined. Understanding of the anatomy of

Striatal GABAergic interneurons that express the gene for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) have been identified previously by several methods. Although generally assumed to be dopaminergic, possibly serving as a compensatory source of dopamine (DA) in Parkinson's disease, this assumption has never been tested directly. In TH-Cre mice whose nigrostriatal pathway had been eliminated unilaterally with 6-hydroxydopamine, we injected a Cre-dependent virus coding for channelrhodopsin-2 and enhanced yellow fluorescent protein unilaterally into the unlesioned midbrain or bilaterally into the striatum. Fast-s

Childhood trauma is believed to contribute to the development of borderline personality disorder (BPD), however the mechanism by which childhood trauma increases risk for specific symptoms of the disorder is not well understood. Here, we explore the relationship between childhood trauma, brain activation in response to emotional stimuli and psychotic symptoms in BPD. Twenty individuals with a diagnosis of BPD and 16 healthy controls were recruited to undergo a functional MRI scan, during which they viewed images of faces expressing the emotion of fear. Participants also completed the childhood

α-Synuclein aggregation contributes to the Parkinson's disease (PD) pathology in multiple ways-the two most important being the activation of neuroinflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction. Our recent studies have shown the beneficial effects of a heat shock protein (HSP) inducer, carbenoxolone (Cbx), in reducing the aggregation of α-synuclein in a rotenone-based rat model of PD. The present study was designed to explore its ability to attenuate the α-synuclein-mediated alterations in neuroinflammation and mitochondrial functions. The PD model was generated by the rotenone administration (2 m

The circadian nature of mood and its dysfunction in affective disorders is well recognized, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are still unclear. Here, we show that the circadian nuclear receptor REV-ERBα, which is associated with bipolar disorder, impacts midbrain dopamine production and mood-related behavior in mice. Genetic deletion of the Rev-erbα gene or pharmacological inhibition of REV-ERBα activity in the ventral midbrain induced mania-like behavior in association with a central hyperdopaminergic state. Also, REV-ERBα repressed tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) gene transcription via comp

BACKGROUND: The occlusion of the artery of Percheron results in bilateral thalamic and mesencephalic infarctions. In this series, we attempted to classify the subtypes of clinical presentations and long-term prognosis with regards to radiological patterns.
METHODS: We sought the clinical and radiological findings of 15 (8 men and 7 women; mean age 48 years) consecutive patients with Percheron artery infarct over 10 years. We classified the clinical symptoms according to the presence of a mental status disturbance (MSD), behavioral amnesic impairment (BAI), aphasia/dysarthria, ocular movement

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence indicates that mangiferin (MGF), a natural xanthone, by virtue of its antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties is neuroprotective. Here we sought to verify the cytoprotective role of MGF on cultured rat primary mesencephalic cells exposed to 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) in vitro, and the MGFs anti-inflammatory potential in mouse model of ketamine-induced schizophrenia in vivo.
METHODS: 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT)-assay was performed tomeasure cell viability inmesencephalic cell cultures exposed to neurotoxin (6-OHDA, 40

BACKGROUND: In 95% of patients with an apparently normal distribution of blood using unenhanced computed tomography (CT), no ruptured aneurysm for a perimesencephalic subarachnoid hemorrhage (PMSAH) will be detected. In general, the clinical course of these patients is more favorable than that of patients with a detected ruptured aneurysm. We wanted to assess whether vessel variants of the vertebro-basilar circulation are more common in patients with PMSAH than in patients with SAH caused by intracranial aneurysms. Furthermore, we wanted to investigate whether CT angiography (CTA) as a sole di

Cyanide is a potent inhibitor of mitochondrial oxidative metabolism and produces mitochondria-mediated death of dopaminergic neurons and sublethal intoxications that are associated with a Parkinson-like syndrome. Cyanide toxicity is enhanced when mitochondrial uncoupling is stimulated following up-regulation of uncoupling protein-2 (UCP-2). In this study, the role of a pro-survival protein, Bcl-2, in cyanide-mediated cell death was determined in a rat dopaminergic immortalized mesencephalic cell line (N27 cells). Following pharmacological up-regulation of UCP-2 by treatment with Wy14,643, cyan

We investigated the effects of sustained embryonic hypoxia on the neonatal ventilatory chemosensitivity. White Leghorn chicken eggs were incubated at 38 degrees C either in 21% O(2) throughout incubation (normoxia, Nx) or in 15% O(2) from embryonic day 5 (hypoxia, Hx), hatching time included. Hx embryos hatched approximately 11 h later than Nx, with similar body weights. Measurements of gaseous metabolism (oxygen consumption, Vo(2)) and pulmonary ventilation (Ve) were conducted either within the first 8 h (early) or later hours (late) of the first posthatching day. In resting conditions, Hx ha

BACKGROUND: Tentorial dural arteriovenous fistula (AVF) presented symptoms due to mass effect on the dilated draining vein. We report a patient presenting left hemisensory disturbance because of compression of the midbrain by a dilated draining vein of the AVF. The AVF has disappeared completely by drainer clipping after feeder embolization.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 66-year-old woman presented with left hemisensory disturbance due to compression of the midbrain by a dilated draining vein with tentorial dural AVF. On admission, she complained of left hemisensory disturbance. Enhanced computed tomog

Acid-sensitive ion channels (ASICs) are proton-gated and belong to the family of degenerin channels. In the mammalian nervous system, ASICs are most well known in sensory neurons, where they are involved in nociception, occurring when injury or inflammation causes acidification. ASICs also are widely expressed in the CNS, and some synaptic roles have been revealed. Because neuronal activity can produce pH changes, ASICs may respond to local acidic transients and alter the excitability of neuronal circuits more widely than is presently appreciated. Furthermore, ASICs have been found to underlie

Idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and multiple system atrophy (MSA) are the most common movement disorders associated with neurodegenerative disease. A clinical differential diagnosis of IPD and atypical Parkinsonian disorders, such as MSA and PSP, is often complicated by the presence of symptoms common to both groups. Since Parkinsonism has a different pathophysiology in the cortical and subcortical brain structures, assessing the regional cerebral glucose metabolism may assist in making a differential diagnosis of Parkinsonism. The 18F-FDG PET images

Nurr1, a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors, has been found to be essential for the development of ventral midbrain dopamine (DA)ergic neurons. To study the regional selectivity and phenotypic specificity of regulation by Nurr1 of the genesis of DAergic neurons, we examined DAergic, serotonin (5-HT)ergic, norepinephrine (NE)ergic, cholinergic, glutamate (GLU)ergic, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic neurons in the brains of Nurr1-deficient mice by immunohistochemistry and biochemistry. We demonstrated that in homozygous Nurr1-deficient mice (Nurr1-/-), DAe

Although Joubert syndrome (JS) was first reported in 1969 by Joubert et al (21), the long-term outcome is not yet documented. We report 19 children (4 pairs of siblings) from a single institution diagnosed with JS. Nine children were last seen between ages 10 and 18 years, seven between ages 1 and 4 years. Three children died before 3 years of age, showing marked breathing problems and minimal development. The 16 surviving children showed variable motor development, walking was typically achieved between 2 and 10 years, two children did not learn to walk. Cognitive development showed four with

Positron emission tomography (PET) using tracers of the dopaminergic system has been used to measure striatal function in a small number of parkinsonian patients undergoing neurotransplantation procedures. Some postoperative scans have shown an unequivocal increase in presynaptic dopaminergic function at the graft site, providing evidence of graft survival independent of clinical assessment. Combined PET and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images provide the facility to explore the relationship between graft placement, survival and clinical efficacy.
