Multisensory integration is often thought to occur automatically when sensory cues are spatially and temporally congruent. However, emerging evidence suggests that integration is dynamically shaped by attention, task demands, and action. The present study investigated whether unimodal visual, bimodal congruent (i.e., audiovisual), and bimodal incongruent (i.e., sound-induced flash illusion) perception was modulated by the spatial proximity between a cue and a target location (Experiment 1) and by the actual execution of a goal-directed action (Experiment 2). Participants performed pointing mov

The additional singleton paradigm, introduced in the early 1990s, has become a cornerstone in attention research and the study of attentional capture. In this task, observers search for a unique target singleton while an irrelevant, but salient distractor singleton is also present. Decades of research have demonstrated that such distractors reliably slow responses, supporting a stimulus-driven account of attentional selection. This paper reviews the origins of the paradigm, key findings, and ongoing debates, with particular focus on design features that shape results. Critical factors include

When navigating the visual world, we have considerable control over what stimuli to select for deeper processing, and we can often resist capture by physically salient but task-irrelevant distractors. A debate has emerged regarding whether distractor avoidance is accomplished by active goal-driven attentional control, or by passive exclusion of distractors from the narrow attentional focus of a highly serial search, as the attentional window account claims. In the present study, in order to explore the issue, we measured the extent to which attentional avoidance of salient distractors is affec

Listeners use information in the speech signal as well as linguistic and real-world knowledge to tackle the immense variability of speech. Here, we focus on the use of contextual and talker-bound fundamental frequency (F0) cues during the perception of voiceless fricatives' center of gravity (CoG). In Experiment 1, Dutch participants heard the sentence Nu komt het woord ?ok ("Now comes the word ?ok") where "?" denotes a fricative from a synthetic /s-ʃ/ continuum in three carrier F0 conditions (low, mid, high), and indicated whether they heard the high-CoG /sɔk/ "sock" or the low-CoG /ʃɔk/ "(to

Absolute pitch is the ability to label the pitch chroma of isolated tones. Recent work has demonstrated rapid improvements in pitch identification using an incidental contingency learning task. In the present work, we used a similar approach to assess whether knowledge about the pitch chroma (rather than pitch heights) of tones is possible in our task. In Experiment 1 with nonmusicians, seven notes in two octaves were played most often with their corresponding written note names and less often with the others. Tones from a third octave were played equally often with all note names (i.e., no co

Attentional orienting in response to infants' gaze is crucial for effective caregiving and interaction with infants, yet it has often been overlooked in previous studies. Using a modified central cueing paradigm, this study measured gaze-cueing effect (GCE) in response to infant versus adult faces (N = 115). Results showed that male participants exhibited a negligible GCE to infant faces, significantly smaller than their response to adult faces. In contrast, female participants exhibited significant GCEs to both infant and adult faces. This gender difference disappeared when the infant faces w

Responses to targets are often slower when distractors are incongruent rather than congruent with the required response. Past research indicates that alerting cues can magnify this congruency effect, such that responses are faster when the target is cued, but distractors have a greater negative influence. This alerting-congruency interaction is reliably found in the arrow-version of Eriksen's flanker task but not in the Stroop task, leading some to suggest that the interaction only occurs with stimuli that have pre-existing directional associations. The current experiments test the possibility

A central debate in visual attention concerns whether selection is guided primarily by top- down control or by bottom-up salience. In the additional singleton task, the absence of attentional capture by a distractor is often attributed to the adoption of feature-search mode. An alternative account proposes that these displays instead partly induce serial search, which naturally limits distractor interference. The present study tested this by linking two diagnostics of search dynamics, set size effects and two target compatibility, within the same paradigm. Participants searched for a predefine

Human gaze behaviour provides insights into the mental processes underlying the execution of a task. As reading involves visual sampling and language processing, various studies investigate how the linguistic information of texts influences visual behaviour. However, established measures of human visual behaviour are dependent on the exact configuration of the text stimuli and the nonlinguistic stimuli used for comparison, leaving systematic stimulus-independent differences largely unknown. Here, we show that relative saccade length distributions reveal similarities and differences in gaze dyn

Visual search can be facilitated by learning statistical regularities; for example, repeated exposure to the same spatial layout of search items can speed target detection (contextual cueing). While contextual cueing is usually attributed to improved attentional guidance towards the target, some studies have proposed that the benefit for repeated search layouts may also facilitate response-related processing after the target has been localized. To test this latter account, the current study systematically manipulated the difficulty of the target-related decision by varying the number of possib

Sensory substitution devices (SSDs) offer a unique framework for investigating attention, perception, and sensorimotor interactions. While previous studies have examined how the type of stimuli provided by an SSD and the exploration strategy applied during active manipulation affect perception, proprioception, and motor-exploratory performance, these factors have not been explored in the context of passive guidance through an SSD. In this study, we examined how the type of stimuli (modality-specific vs. cross-modal stimuli) and the exploration strategy used to passively guide participants (mic

Night vision goggles (NVGs) enhance vision under scotopic conditions by amplifying near-infrared light and converting it to a wavelength that can be seen by the human visual system. Although significantly more expensive than monocular systems, binocular NVGs provide the user with independent inputs to each eye, and therefore facilitate stereopsis, the ability to discriminate differences in depth from binocular cues. Past work examining stereopsis through NVGs has been mixed, with early-generation systems showing no evidence for stereopsis while more-modern systems show some evidence for (and o

A combined behavioral and EEG experiment examined the effects of intramodal and crossmodal cueing on auditory spatial discrimination. On each trial, the participant fixated a neutral location and was presented with an auditory target (two broadband "buzzes" with a slight relative spatial offset) from one of two locations (central or lateral). The target was preceded by a cue varying in its validity (presented from the same or a different location than the target with a 50% probability) and modality (auditory or visual, in separate blocks). The participant's task was to indicate the direction o

In a single glance at a collection of objects, we can appreciate their numerosity. But what are the "objects" over which this number sense operates? Most work in this domain has implicitly assumed that we estimate the number of discrete, bounded individuals actually present in the visual field. However, in many instances we can construe such individuals as potential parts of composite objects that they can create-as when we assemble furniture or complete a jigsaw puzzle. Here, we demonstrate that visual numerosity estimation is sensitive to such part-whole relations, such that the number of it

Recently, a new audiovisual illusion, the beep-speed illusion, was discovered in which a visually presented, linearly moving object is perceived to be faster if directional changes occur simultaneously with a short auditory burst compared to a purely visually presented moving object of the same speed. The present study uses this new illusion to test the representation of motion speed in human perception. Across two experiments (each N = 30), the beep-speed illusion was observed with circular motion of the objects and across different speeds of the audiovisual object. Interestingly, the size of

Time-to-contact (TTC) is the remaining time for a moving object to reach its observer. A good estimation of TTC is essential in everyday situations such as crossing a road or catching a ball. So far, most studies have only looked at estimation of TTC at constant speed, and in visual condition, whereas it is a multisensory task by essence. In our study, we investigated TTC estimation at constant or accelerated speed for three modalities: Auditory, Visual and Audiovisual. At constant speed, it has been demonstrated that TTC estimation performance is already accurate so the addition of auditory c

Peripersonal space, the space immediately surrounding the body, functions as an interface between the self and the external environment. In interactions with dynamic environments, not only bodily information but also accurate estimation of the dynamics of external objects is required. While numerous studies have demonstrated that real-time estimation of object dynamics, based on bottom-up mechanisms, modulates peripersonal space representation, little evidence supports the involvement of top-down knowledge about object dynamics in shaping peripersonal space. In the present study, we conducted

Objects actively stored in visual working memory (VWM) produce VWM-based attentional capture. Interestingly, for an object's features to be stored in VWM, they do not need to be shown but can also be reinstated from long-term memory (LTM). Unlike shown features, reinstated features in VWM sometimes capture attention even when task-irrelevant, suggesting observers may be able to choose when reinstatement occurs. To investigate the control of LTM reinstatement, we examined how capture by reinstated features is influenced by differences in task demands. Participants memorized objects with specifi

In everyday life, aesthetic liking largely depends on the fluency of stimulus-driven, default, rapid, and automatic processing. However, our understanding of how perceptual and conceptual fluency jointly shape aesthetic liking in automatic processing remains limited. In two experiments, the masked priming paradigm was employed to manipulate perceptual and conceptual fluency of target stimuli separately, and participants were instructed to rate liking for colored images of everyday objects based on their initial impressions. The results indicated that the masked matched contours and words signi

Previous studies of human-avatar interaction have shown that users are able to take the perspective of an avatar and act as if they were in the avatar's place. As a result, the positions of objects are encoded from the avatar's perspective and within the avatar's spatial reference frame, and avatar-based compatibility effects can be observed. In the present study, we confronted participants simultaneously with two different avatars that offered conflicting visual perspectives. We asked participants to take the perspective of one avatar while performing a Simon task. In one half of the experime
