Bidirectional Links Between Social Rejection and Sleep.

OBJECTIVE: This set of studies examines the bidirectional links between social rejection and poor sleep, a ubiquitous and increasingly problematic health behavior. METHODS: In study 1, a multiday field experiment, 43 participants completed a neutral task just before sleep on night 1 and a social rejection task on night 2. Objective and subjective sleep, postrejection affect, and physiological responses were measured. In study 2, 338 participants reported typical sleep quality before coming to the laboratory where they received social rejection or social acceptance feedback from a stranger. Ph

A Latent Class Analysis of Polysubstance Use Patterns and Their Association with Ruminative Thinking Styles, Impulsivity-Like Traits, and Adverse Childhood Experiences Among College Students from Seven Countries.

BACKGROUND: Among college students, research has found distinct classes of polysubstance use patterns differentially associated with negative consequences. However, there is less clarity regarding how vulnerability factors discriminate across polysubstance use types and cross-cultural variability in these patterns. OBJECTIVES: In addressing these gaps, we identified typologies of substance use based on reported lifetime use of a set of substances in college students from seven countries. We also examined mean differences across classes on ruminative thinking styles, impulsivity-like traits, a

Specific Associations in the Alpha Frequency Between the Subcomponents of Rumination and the Subsystems of the Default Mode Network Among Bipolar I Disorder Patients.

Introduction: Rumination in bipolar disorder (BD) is well documented. Recent neuroimaging studies highlight the role of the default mode network (DMN) in rumination, while few studies have evaluated the DMN activity in BD rumination, particularly the underlying neuroelectrophysiology. Methods: A total of 44 patients with depressed bipolar I disorder (BD-I) and 46 healthy controls underwent resting-state magnetoencephalography. Two core hubs of the DMN, the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), and anterior medial prefrontal cortex, together with the dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and the

Glymphatic-Related Alterations in Major Depressive Disorder and Treatment-Resistant Depression: Imaging Proxies, Mechanistic Links, and Therapeutic Opportunities.

Major depressive disorder is increasingly conceptualized as a condition involving brain network dysfunction, neuroimmune imbalance, sleep-circadian disruption, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis dysregulation, monoaminergic arousal instability, and impaired synaptic plasticity. In parallel, the glymphatic system has emerged as a plausible integrative mechanism linking these domains, because it is a glia-dependent pathway supporting cerebrospinal fluid-interstitial fluid exchange and metabolic-waste clearance, with activity strongly modulated by deep non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep.

Changes in emotion regulation are associated with treatment outcomes in web-based eating disorder interventions: analyses of two randomized controlled trials.

OBJECTIVE: Web-based interventions effectively reduce eating disorder symptoms; however, the associated mechanisms remain largely unknown. This study examined whether changes in emotion regulation processes were linked to treatment response in two web-based cognitive-behavioral self-help interventions for bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED), and tested pre-treatment emotion regulation as a moderator. METHOD: Data from two randomized controlled trials (N = 308, age: M = 32.76, SD = 10.12; female: 96.43%) were analyzed. Latent-change models and network intervention analyses wer

Executive Function and Emotion Regulation in Depressive and Anxiety Disorders: A Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Executive function (EF) and emotion regulation (ER) deficits are prevalent in depressive and anxiety disorders, suggesting a transdiagnostic role. Given their role in treatment engagement, symptom reduction, and relapse prevention, we examine EF and ER interrelationships in these disorders. METHODS: Participants (n = 27 depressive/anxiety disorders, n = 27 nonclinical group) underwent psychiatric screening and assessments of symptom severity, EF (set-shifting, response inhibition [RI], working memory [WM], verbal fluency, planning), and ER (severity, strategies, situational ER fol

Heart Talk: Emotional Inner Speech Increases Heart Rate.

In two preregistered experiments (exp.1: n = 44; exp.2: n = 46), we investigated whether emotional inner speech influences heart rate. Participants were asked to engage in sessions of either: self-encouraging positive inner speech, self-degrading negative inner speech, or inner counting while their heart rate was monitored. Participants were lying on a bed and asked to remain still during the inner speech trials. Experiment 1 consisted of two negative, two positive, and four counting trials. Experiment 2 had four trials of each type. Trials lasted 180 s in Experiment 1 and had a mixed duration

Digital App Based Cognitive Behaviour Therapy CBT-I Course Improving Insomnia and Sleep Hygiene: A Randomised Controlled Trial.

Problems with initiating and maintaining sleep are among the most common health complaints, with prevalence rates exceeding 50% depending on the survey. Preventing the progression to chronic insomnia may reduce public healthcare costs and prevent secondary illnesses. This study examined the effectiveness of a novel app-based digital course using cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) in preventing the manifestation of insomnia among individuals with sub-threshold to moderate symptoms. Participants were assigned to an intervention group (N = 191, ages 20-75) or a waitlist control gr

Maintenance suppression reduces the accessibility of visual information in working memory regardless of its normative valence.

Intentional removal of unwanted information allows us to focus on our current goals. Previous research has shown that suppressing the maintenance of neutral images in working memory can impair access to that information in immediate and delayed memory tests. However, it remains unclear whether maintenance suppression has the same impact on emotionally valenced images. Intrusive thinking (e.g., rumination) often involves negative thoughts that persist as individuals attempt to push them out of mind. Given the emotional nature of intrusive information that can repeatedly enter working memory, it

State-independent and -dependent behavioral and neuroelectrophysiological characteristics during dynamic decision-making in patients with current and remitted depression.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether the altered decision-making (DM) observed in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) is neurophysiological and whether it improves with remission of depressive symptoms. The aim of this study was to identify developmental patterns of DM behavior, related cognitive characteristics, and electrophysiological abnormalities in patients with MDD across clinical stages. METHODS: A sample of 48 first-episode MDD patients (FD group), 41 remitted MDD patients (RD group), and 43 healthy controls (HCs) completed psychometric assessments and performed the balloon an

Emotion regulation strategies and mental health symptoms during COVID-19: the mediating role of insomnia.

OBJECTIVES: COVID-19 has become a major source of stress for people around the world. Stressful life events play a role in the pathogenesis of sleep disorders such as insomnia which is considered a risk factor for anxiety and depression. Emotion regulation is an important factor linked with sleep and mental health problems. Therefore, the main goal of the present study was to examine whether insomnia could constitute a mediation mechanism that explains the relationship between emotion regulation strategies (rumination, reappraisal, suppression) and stress-induced mental health outcomes during

Grieving a disrupted biography: an interpretative phenomenological analysis exploring barriers to the use of mindfulness after neurological injury or impairment.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness has demonstrated strong utility for enhancing self-management and health outcomes in chronic illness. However, sensation-focused mindfulness techniques may not be appropriate for clinical populations with neurological injury. This study aimed to identify how expert mindfulness teachers with sensory loss/impairment naturalistically adapt and experience mindfulness. We aimed to highlight the rationale for and barriers to mindfulness practice when living with sensory loss. METHODS: A qualitative, semi-structured interview design was used, analysed via Interpretative Pheno

Effectiveness of an internet-based intervention to improve sleep difficulties in a culturally diverse sample of international students: A randomised controlled pilot study.

Sleep difficulties are widespread among international students. Internet-based interventions are suggested as a low-threshold treatment option but may require cultural adaptation among culturally diverse populations. The present pilot study investigated the effectiveness and acceptance of an internet-based intervention to improve sleep difficulties in international students. A total of 81 international students of 36 nationalities were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 41) or waitlist control group (n = 40). The intervention group received immediate access to a culturally non-adapted

Emotion Regulation Processes Can Benefit Self-Regulated Learning in Classical Musicians.

Self-regulated learning (SRL) is the degree to which students are metacognitively, motivationally, and behaviourally active participants in their own learning process. It involves the self-regulation of cognitive, behavioural, and affective processes. SRL holds significant potential for enhancing practise and achievement. Although affect is acknowledged as one of the three fundamental processes in SRL, there is limited research investigating it. However, emotions have been found to influence SRL efficiency while emotion regulation (ER) can impact learning outcomes. Thus, this study sought to i

Traumatic loss: Mental health consequences and implications for treatment and prevention.

Traumatic loss involves the loss of loved ones in the context of potentially traumatizing circumstances and is a commonly reported traumatic event. It may give rise to disturbed grief, called prolonged grief disorder (PGD) in ICD-11 and persistent complex bereavement disorder (PCBD) in DSM-5, combined with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. The recent inclusion of grief disorders in both DSM-5 and ICD-11 have spurred research on grief-related psychopathology. This special issue on traumatic loss includes 10 articles and two letters. Topics addressed include diagnostic criteri

Remediating Reduced Autobiographical Memory in Healthy Older Adults With Computerized Memory Specificity Training (c-MeST): An Observational Before-After Study.

BACKGROUND: The ability to retrieve specific autobiographical memories decreases with cognitive aging. This decline is clinically relevant due to its association with impairments in problem solving, daily functioning, and depression. A therapist-delivered group training protocol, Memory Specificity Training (MeST), has been shown to enhance the retrieval of specific memories while ameliorating the impairments and negative outcomes associated with reduced specificity. The therapist-delivered nature of this intervention means it is relatively expensive to deliver and difficult for people with mo

Are children with social anxiety disorder more likely than children with other anxiety disorders to anticipate poor social performance and reflect negatively on their performance?

BACKGROUND: The cognitive theory of social anxiety disorder (SAD) suggests that adults with SAD have a tendency to anticipate poor social performance and reflect negatively on their performance following a social event. While a number of studies with socially anxious adults have supported the role of poor performance anticipation and post-event rumination in SAD, to date, only a few studies have addressed whether this also applies to children with SAD. METHODS: Children (7-12 years) diagnosed with SAD (n = 40), other anxious children (n = 40) and non-anxious children (n = 34) were exposed to

Cognitive Risk and Protective Factors for Suicidal Ideation: A Two Year Longitudinal Study in Adolescence.

Adolescence is a developmental period associated with heightened risk for both the onset and escalation of suicidal ideation (SI). Given that SI is a potent predictor of suicidal behavior, it is important to develop models of vulnerability for and protection against SI, particularly among young adolescents. This study examined the relative impact of several cognitive vulnerabilities, as well as protective factors, for SI among young adolescents over a 2-year interval encompassing their transition to mid-adolescence. At baseline, 324 adolescents (M = 12.39 years; SD = 0.63; 52.5 % female) compl

A Pilot Study of the Correlation between the Numeric Rating Scale used to Evaluate "Geop" and Questionnaires on Pain Perception.

BACKGROUND: The word "geop" is a unique Korean term commonly used to describe fright, fear and anxiety, and similar concepts. The purpose of this pilot study is to examine the correlation between the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) score of geop and three different questionnaires on pain perception. METHODS: Patients aged 20 to 70 years who visited our outpatient pain clinics were evaluated. They were requested to rate the NRS score (range: 0-100) if they felt geop. Next, they completed questionnaires on pain perception, in this case the Korean version of the Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire (PSQ),
