Epidemiologic features of intestinal parasitic infections in Italian mental institutions.

To determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in the residents of four Italian psychiatric institutions, we examined the stool specimens collected in triplicate from 238 residents, enrolled between May 1995 and May 1996. Besides, physician and staff nurses provided data about each resident by standardized questionnaires. Parasites were detected in the fecal samples from 128 patients (53.8%). However, in the stool specimens from 106 residents only non-pathogenic protozoa were found (82.8%). Trichuris trichiura ova, Giardia lamblia cysts and trophozoites, Cryptosporidium parvum

Treatment of inflammatory bowel disease: a review of medical therapy.

Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are chronic inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. While a cure remains elusive, both can be treated with medications that induce and maintain remission. With the recent advent of therapies that inhibit tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha the overlap in medical therapies for UC and CD has become greater. Although 5-ASA agents have been a mainstay in the treatment of both CD and UC, the data for their efficacy in patients with CD, particularly as maintenance therapy, are equivocal. Antibiotics may have a limited role in the treatment

Gut resilience and clinical homeostasis following administration of neomycin and albendazole in soil-transmitted helminth-infected adults living in Lambaréné, Gabon.

PURPOSE: Gut resilience and systemic homeostasis are interrelated dynamic functions. A gut that fails to regulate intestinal barrier integrity, metabolite production, and immune regulation will lead to systemic pathogenic invasion and susceptibility to infections. Gut resilience withstands stressors that can induce gut failure, and even when disturbances occur, it quickly restores its composition and functions. There is a paucity of data on the microbiome of people living in low- and middle-income settings. We therefore assessed the local and systemic conditions of gut resilience following neo

Spatial patterns and risk mapping of opisthorchiasis and soil-transmitted helminth infections in Thailand using Bayesian geostatistical models.

Opisthorchis viverrini and soil-transmitted helminths (STH) remain major public health challenges in Thailand due to their widespread distribution. This study aimed to map and predict the prevalence of O. viverrini and STH infections across Thailand and to identify key environmental, climatic, and socio-economic factors influencing their geographical distribution. Bayesian geostatistical logistic regression models were fitted to national survey data to estimate infection risk and generate high-resolution spatial predictions. Demographic (sex, age), environmental (land surface temperature, vege

Identification of antigens in the Trichinella spiralis extracellular vesicles for serological detection of early stage infection in swine.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported the roles of Trichinella spiralis extracellular vesicles in immune regulation and pathogen diagnosis. Currently, the T. spiralis muscle larvae excretory/secretory product (Ts-ML-ES) is the antigen recommended by the International Commission on Trichinellosis (ICT) for serological diagnosis of trichinellosis. However, it can only be used to detect middle and late stages of infections, and cross-reactions with other parasite detections occur. Therefore, there is a need to identify antigens for specific detection of early stage trichinellosis. METHODS: E

Schistosomiasis, soil transmitted helminthiasis, and malaria co-infections among women of reproductive age in rural communities of Kwale County, coastal Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Schistosoma haematobium, soil transmitted helminthes (STH), and malaria lead to a double burden in pregnancy that eventually leads to poor immunity, increased susceptibility to other infections, and poor pregnancy outcomes. Many studies have been carried out on pre-school and school aged children but very little has been done among the at risk adult population including women of reproductive age (WRA). Our current study sought to establish the risk factors and burden of co-infection with S. haematobium, STH, and Plasmodium sp. among WRA in Kwale County, Coastal Kenya. METHODS: A t

Prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections and associated risk factors for hookworm infections among primary schoolchildren in rural areas of Nakhon Si Thammarat, southern Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are among the most common type of infections worldwide and are widely distributed in tropical areas. In rural areas of southern Thailand where most land is used for agriculture, children are at risk of acquiring parasites, especially STHs. Assessing the current situation regarding parasitic infection in these areas is a prerequisite for developing appropriate control measures. This study is aimed at determining the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections, the intensity of STH infections and the associated risk factors among primary s

Comparison of sensitivity and faecal egg counts of Mini-FLOTAC using fixed stool samples and Kato-Katz technique for the diagnosis of Schistosoma mansoni and soil-transmitted helminths.

Accurate diagnostic tools for human helminthiasis are crucial for epidemiological surveys, improved patient management, and evaluation of community-based intervention studies. However, the diagnosis of intestinal schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis heavily relies on stool microscopy using the Kato-Katz technique, which has a low sensitivity. The Mini-FLOTAC method is an alternative microscopy-based technique, but its diagnostic performance using sodium acetate-acetic acid-formalin-(SAF)-fixed stool specimens has not been validated. The fixation of stool samples for later examina
