Transforming soil decontamination: the role and prospects of nanotechnological remediation.

Soil pollution, driven by industrialization and intensive agriculture, poses critical risks and global threats, with over 16% of global soils estimated to be contaminated by heavy metals, organic pollutants, and pesticides. This is impacting ecosystems, food security, and human health through bioaccumulation and carcinogenicity. Conventional remediation methods are often costly, destructive, and insufficient for deep and heterogenous contamination, often generating secondary waste and require long time for treatment. Nanotechnology introduces a paradigm shift, leveraging nanomaterials with hig

Multifaceted assessment of the content of potentially toxic elements and microplastics in the sargassum habitats of Caribbean beaches, Mexico.

The present study aimed to evaluate potentially toxic elements (PTEs) (Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Li, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, S, Se, Sr, Tl, Zn) in sargassum habitats at two distinct sites: Puerto Morelos (PM) and Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve (SK) along the Mexican Caribbean coast. Median dissolved concentrations of S (1937.8 mg/L), Mg (1172.5 mg/L), and Ca (408.7 mg/L) were relatively higher than those of other elements studied. Similarly, elemental concentrations in sediment followed an order of Ca > Mg > Sr > S > Fe > Al > B > Ba > Mn > Cr > Se > Cu > As > Zn > Pb > Tl > Li > Ni > C

The role of endoplasmic reticulum stress-mediated autophagy in cadmium-induced liver injury in rats.

Cadmium (Cd) is a widespread toxicant with high bioaccumulation potential. This study explores the interplay of endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS), autophagy, and apoptosis in Cd-induced hepatotoxicity, focusing on whether ERS-driven autophagy protects against liver injury. Male SD rats (4 weeks old, n = 24) were acclimatized for 7 days and randomized into four groups receiving CdCl₂ at doses of 0, 0.5, 1, or 2 mg/kg for 14 consecutive days. A second cohort (n = 36) was similarly allocated to six groups: control, Cd, 4-PBA, Cd + 4-PBA, CQ and Cd + CQ. All treatments were administered via daily

Integrating multi-omics and network toxicology to identify FIS1 as a key target of environmental pollutants in male infertility.

BACKGROUND: Male infertility (MI) impacts about one in seven couples globally, involving complex gene-environment interactions. Environmental pollutants may disrupt spermatogenesis via mitochondrial dysfunction, but key targets and mechanisms are unclear. Integrating multi-omics with computational toxicology offers a novel strategy to decipher these interactions. METHODS: We integrated blood transcriptomics from MI patients, GWAS summary statistics, and QTL data (methylation, expression, protein). MI-related mitochondrial genes were identified through differential expression analysis, followe

Spatial and seasonal assessment of heavy metal contamination in Golden Horn sediments, İstanbul, Türkiye: Ecological impacts, human health risks, and environmental monitoring.

This study investigates the concentrations of heavy metals (As, Hg, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in surface sediments of the Golden Horn, a historically significant natural harbor and UNESCO World Heritage Site inlet of the Bosphorus in İstanbul, Türkiye. The novelty of this research lies in providing the first comprehensive dual-risk assessment for the Golden Horn estuary, integrating ecological impact evaluation with human health risk characterization via ingestion and dermal contact pathways, considering both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects of sediment-bound heavy metals. Concentration

Impact of climate change on arsenic concentrations in paddy rice and the associated dietary health risks in Asia: an experimental and modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Rising global atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and surface temperatures could negatively affect rice yields and nutritional quality; however, their effects on arsenic accumulation in paddy rice have not been assessed concurrently. We aimed to assess the impact of increases in CO2 and temperature (individually and in combination) on arsenic concentrations in rice, characterise soil properties that might influence arsenic uptake, and model the associated risks of cancer and other health outcomes due to increased arsenic exposure. METHODS: For this modelling study we p

First Insights Into Within Host Translocation of the Bacillus cereus Toxin Cereulide Using a Porcine Model.

Bacillus cereus is a gram-positive pathogen mainly known to evoke two types of foodborne poisonings. The diarrheal syndrome is caused by enterotoxins produced during growth in the intestine. In contrast, the emetic type is caused by the dodecadepsipeptide cereulide pre-formed in food. Usually, both diseases are self-limiting but occasionally more severe forms, including fatal ones, are reported. Since the mechanisms of cereulide toxin uptake and translocation within the body as well as the mechanism of its toxic action are still unknown, we used a porcine model to investigate the uptake, route

Bioavailability and risk assessment of potentially toxic elements in garden edible vegetables and soils around a highly contaminated former mining area in Germany.

Although soil contamination by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in Europe has a history of many centuries, related problems are often considered as having been dealt with due to the enforcement of tight legislations. However, there are many unsolved issues. We aimed to assess PTE levels in highly contaminated soils and in garden edible vegetables using human health risk indices in order to evaluate the availability and mobilization of arsenic (As), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn). In four gardens in Germany, situated on, or in the vicinity of, a mine dump a

Toxicokinetics of tetrabromoethylcyclohexane (TBECH) in juvenile brown trout (Salmo trutta) and effects on plasma sex hormones.

Technical 1,2-dibromo-4-(1,2 dibromoethyl)cyclohexane or tetrabromoethylcyclohexane (TBECH) used primarily as an additive flame retardant in polystyrene foams, contains two diastereoisomers, α- and β- present in equimolar amounts. At temperatures in excess of 125°C, isomerization to two other isoforms, δ- and γ- is possible. The recent detection of TBECH in the environment and studies suggesting that isomers are androgenic prompted us to examine the toxicokinetics and biochemical effects of one of the isomers, β-, in a controlled laboratory environment. Juvenile brown trout (Salmo trutta) were

Rapid and Reversible Capture of PFOS from Complex Water Matrices by an Earth-Abundant Iron(III)-Carboxylate Metal-Organic Framework.

BACKGROUND: Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is a globally recognised persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic pollutant. Under China GB 5749-2022 and the US EPA 2024 drinking water MCL, permissible levels have fallen to 40 ng L-1 and 4 ng L-1, respectively, placing unprecedented demands on remediation technologies. METHODS: An iron(III)-carboxylate metal-organic framework prepared from low-cost precursors (denoted MOF-LC, [Fe3O(BDC)3Cl]·x(solvent)) was synthesised via a one-pot solvothermal route from FeCl3·6H2O and terephthalic acid (H2BDC). The material was characterised by PXRD, N2 adsorptio

Gestational cadmium exposure triggers POI-Like ovarian dysfunction and accelerated ovarian aging through epigenetic repression of Kl in mice.

Cadmium (Cd), a bioaccumulative toxic heavy metal, poses a growing concern for offspring reproductive health following gestational exposure. Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), a major cause of female infertility, remained poorly understood in terms of environmental etiology. This study investigated whether gestational Cd exposure induced ovarian functional decline via epigenetic mechanisms in mice. Using a mouse model of maternal Cd exposure via drinking water, we found that gestational Cd exposure led to POI-like ovarian dysfunction in adult offspring, characterized by diminished ovarian

Effects of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances on maternal thyroid function: a stratified analysis by maternal iodine status and thyroid autoantibody status.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are persistent environmental pollutants with bioaccumulative properties. Emerging evidence indicates that PFAS disrupts thyroid hormone homeostasis, potentially leading to thyroid dysfunction and impairing physiological functions. However, the associations between PFAS exposure, iodine status, and thyroid function during pregnancy remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: A total of 911 pregnant women from a birth cohort in Zhejiang Province were included. Serum concentrations of 13 PFASs and thyroid function parameters were measured du

Multi-tissue contamination (mercury, lead, and organochlorine pesticides) and health biomarkers in Northern Shoveler and Northern Pintail during wintering.

Organochlorine pesticides (OCP) and heavy metals are contaminants that threaten ecosystem health. Migratory birds can bioaccumulate these contaminants; therefore, contaminant effects should be assessed during reproductive, migratory, and wintering stages. We sampled 27 Northern Pintails (Anas acuta) and 26 Northern Shovelers (Spatula clypeata) wintering in southern Sinaloa, Mexico. We measured mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb) in breast feathers and OCPs in liver and muscle. Biomarkers included heterophil/lymphocyte ratio, genotoxicity metrics, organosomatic indices, and the condition index (CI). The

Single-cell transcriptomics showed that maternal polychlorinated biphenyl exposure dysregulated cell type-specific metabolic responses in the livers of female mouse offsprings.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent environmental toxicants that bioaccumulate in the food chain and readily cross the placenta, raising concerns for developmental toxicity. Although PCB exposure has been associated with metabolic and neurodevelopmental disorders, its cell type-specific effects on liver development remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate how maternal exposure to an environmentally relevant Fox River PCB mixture affects liver development in female offspring at single-cell resolution. We hypothesized that developmental PCB exposure disrupts hepatic

Association between prenatal perfluorinated compounds exposure and risk of pregnancy complications: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been shown to be persistent and bioaccumulative. An elevated danger of pregnancy complications perhaps connected with exposure to PFASs, but the potential effects remain elusive. The objective of this study is to investigate the possible association between PFASs exposure and pregnancy complications, drawing upon existing evidence. METHODS: Electronic databases of PubMed, Qvid Medline, Embase, and Web of Science were searched thoroughly to identify eligible research published prior to November 28, 2023, examining the r

A scoping review of sources of mercury and its health effects among Pakistan's most vulnerable population.

Mercury and methyl mercury are poisonous to human body. In the recent times, exposure to mercury has been anthropogenic in nature. Within the past several decades, many incidences of mercury poisoning have been documented in several countries including Pakistan. Mercury has been ingested where it has been used to preserve crops, through the point and non-point source discharge into the surface water, and consequently entering the food chain. We conducted this scoping review of mercury and its health effects in Pakistan in order to raise the flag to a silent ongoing Minamata disease in the coun
