Predictors of self-reported negative mood following a depressive mood induction procedure across previously depressed, currently anxious, and control individuals.

OBJECTIVES: This study identified and examined a set of potential predictors of self-reported negative mood following a depressive mood induction procedure (MIP) in a sample of previously depressed, clinically anxious, and control participants. The examined predictor variables were selected on the basis of previous research and theories of depression, and included symptoms of depression and anxiety, negative and positive affect, negative and positive automatic thoughts, dysfunctional beliefs, rumination, self-concept, and occurrence and perceived unpleasantness of recent negative events. METH

Investigating the impact of rumination and adverse childhood experiences on resting-state neural activity and connectivity in depression.

BACKGROUND: Both ruminative thought processes and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are well-established risk factors for the emergence and maintenance of depression. However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying these associations remain poorly understood. METHODS: We examined resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data (3 T Tim Trio MR scanner; Siemens, Erlangen) of 44 individuals diagnosed with an acute depressive episode. Specifically, we focused on investigating functional brain activity and connectivity within and between three large-scale neural networks associated

COVID-19 Rumination Scale (C-19RS): Initial psychometric evidence in a sample of Dutch employees.

OBJECTIVES: Starting with the spring of 2020, COVID-19 pandemic has impacted nearly every aspect of our lives. Due to its threatening nature, along with the rapid rise in contamination and mortality figures, the spread of the virus has caused a considerable rise in individuals' anxieties. To enable the assessment of the COVID-19-triggered individual rumination, we developed and tested a COVID-19 Rumination Scale (C-19RS). DESIGN AND METHODS: Demographics (i.e., gender, age and education) and several items assessing the proximity of one's exposure to the virus (i.e., whether one's family and c

Mindfulness-Based Interventions for In-Patients With Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders-A Qualitative Approach.

In recent years, mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) have gained clinical relevance in the treatment of patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs). High symptom burden, long durations of hospitalization and high rehospitalization rates demonstrate the severity and cost-intensity of these disorders. MBIs have shown promising treatment outcomes in a small number of trials, primarily taking place in English-speaking countries. The current study aims to explore mechanisms and processes as well as adverse effects of MBIs on in-patients with SSDs in a German university hospital setting.

Probiotic Treatment in Individuals with Euthymic Bipolar Disorder: A Pilot-Study on Clinical Changes and Compliance.

The importance of the microbiome for psychological well-being has gained rising interest in the last decade. A strategy to examine the role of the microbiome in different diseases is the intake of supplements that modulate the gut microbiome. Despite promising results in animal studies, research in humans is sparse to date and especially in individuals with psychiatric disorders almost missing. The current report of the ProbioBIP-one pilot study aims at describing general effects of the intake of the probiotic OMNi-BiOTiC Stress repair® on psychological parameters as well as gastrointestinal s

Randomized controlled trial of emotion regulation therapy versus cognitive behavioral therapy to address distress in cancer caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) shows promise for addressing distress in cancer caregivers, though results are mixed. Traditional CBT may not fully address transdiagnostic processes underlying caregiver distress, such as attentional rigidity and perseverative thinking. Emotion Regulation Therapy (ERT), a contemporary CBT targeting these mechanisms, has promise for cancer caregivers (ERT-C). We compared ERT-C to caregiver-adapted CBT (CBT-C) on caregiver- and patient-reported outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a multisite RCT (ERT-C vs. CBT-C) with distressed caregivers of patients

Cultural fiction as predictive-affective simulation: a neurocognitive model of male emotional regulation and gender violence prevention.

This conceptual article develops an integrative framework connecting the Tie-Up Theory of affective receptivity with predictive processing models of brain function, in order to advance a neurocognitive understanding of the emotional mechanisms underlying gender-based violence and its prevention. Departing from the observation that feminicide cannot be explained solely through sociological or ideological variables, the paper focuses on its emotional and predictive precursors, particularly the inability to tolerate frustration, rejection, or loss without attempting to restore control. Drawing on

Feasibility, safety, and preliminary clinical efficacy of resting-state functional connectivity MRI-guided rTMS for adolescents with major depressive disorder: Protocol for a randomized, double-blind, three-arm, sham-controlled pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is highly prevalent in adolescents, and a substantial proportion of patients show inadequate response or limited tolerability to first-line treatments such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and cognitive behavioral therapy, highlighting the need for additional treatment options. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has demonstrated efficacy in adults with depression, but evidence in adolescents remains limited. Resting-state functional connectivity MRI (rs-fcMRI) may provide a circuit-informed approach for individualizing rTMS

Toward a mechanistic understanding of LGBTQ-affirmative cognitive-behavioral therapy: Testing treatment mediators in a randomized controlled trial with young gay and bisexual men.

INTRODUCTION: Young gay and bisexual men (YGBM) face elevated risk for co-occurring mental (e.g., depression, anxiety), behavioral (e.g., substance use), and sexual (e.g., HIV-transmission-risk behavior) health challenges compared to their heterosexual peers. LGBTQ-affirmative cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) targets psychosocial pathways through which minority stress is hypothesized to contribute to these disparities. We evaluated whether LGBTQ-affirmative CBT operates through these candidate mechanisms. METHODS: We analyzed trial data from 254 HIV-negative YGBM (ages 18-35; 67.2 % racial/

Brief use of behavioral activation features predicts benefits of self-help app on depression symptoms: Secondary analysis of a selective prevention trial in young people.

OBJECTIVE: To explore which cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) self-help app usage predicted depression during a selective prevention trial. METHOD: A recent controlled trial (ECoWeB-PREVENT) randomized young people aged 16-22, at increased risk for depression because of elevated worry/rumination, negative appraisals, and/or rejection sensitivity but without past or current history of major depression, to apps that provided self-monitoring, self-monitoring plus CBT self-help, or self-monitoring plus emotional competency self-help. Self-help included coping strategies for moment-by-moment use

Food noise: definition, measurement, and future research directions.

The term food noise has been recently popularized by individuals managing their weight or adhering to specific diets for health reasons. Anecdotal evidence from patients and clinical observations suggests that food noise involves constant preoccupation with food-related decisions-such as which foods to eat, caloric intake, macronutrient balance, and meal timing-which can become intrusive and unpleasant. Food noise also appears to affect cognitive burden and quality of life, and is being cited as one reason weight-loss attempts fail. The increase in public discourse about food noise has highlig

Investigating the Neural Correlates of the Attention Training Technique Using a Novel fMRI Paradigm for Measuring Attentional Control.

Attentional control (AC) plays a causal role in various mental disorders and, within the metacognitive model, contributes to maladaptive repetitive cognitive processes such as rumination and worry. The Attention Training Technique (ATT), an auditory psychotherapeutic intervention, improves AC and is associated with the efficiency of large-scale fronto-parietal control networks (FPN). This study investigates the neural correlates of ATT by applying a newly tailored fMRI paradigm, focusing on FPN engagement and its relationship with AC. We adapted ATT to examine neural responses during ATT compa

When Words Fail: Investigating Alexithymia And Coping Strategies In Adolescent Mental Health.

Introduction: Alexithymia, defined by difficulty identifying and verbalizing emotions, has emerged as a significant factor influencing emotional regulation and coping behaviors in youth. Adolescents with high levels of alexithymia may be at greater risk of psychological distress due to maladaptive coping mechanisms and reduced social support engagement. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 141 high school students aged 15-18 in Skopje, North Macedonia. Participants completed validated instruments including the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and the Adolesce

The Association Between Salivary FGF2 and Physiological and Psychological Components of the Human Stress Response.

BACKGROUND: Fibroblast Growth Factor 2 (FGF2) is a neurotrophic protein that has been implicated as a biomarker for anxiety and depressive disorders, which comprise a significant component of the global burden of disease. Research using rodents has indicated that FGF2 is part of the stress response, but whether this translates to humans has yet to be investigated. In this study, we aimed to explore the potential role of FGF2 in the human stress response by examining its association with physiological and psychological processes during and following the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). METHODS

Protocol for project MIME: Motivation, inflammation, and Mood in Emerging Adults.

BACKGROUND: Atypical inflammatory biology is gaining evidence as a risk factor for mood psychopathology; however, little work has attempted to integrate inflammation into extant psychosocial frameworks of risk. Recent work using secondary data analysis has investigated the possibility of an immunocognitive model of mood disorders, in which cognitive vulnerabilities (i.e., rumination on positive or negative affect) increase the effect that arousal-related characteristics (e.g., reward sensitivity) have on inflammatory biology in ways that may confer risk for depression and hypo/mania symptoms.

Development and Psychometric Evaluation of the Adaptive Functions of Music Listening Scale.

Music listening may serve many adaptive functions in everyday life. However, studies examining the relationship between the functions of music listening (FML) and wellbeing outcomes have produced mixed findings. The purpose of this study is to develop a new measure to assess music listening functions that is psychometrically robust, and suitable for outcomes-based research on music listening and wellbeing. Scale items were developed based on a literature review and a prior qualitative enquiry. The items were reviewed by four content experts in music psychology and scale development. Scale stru
