The development and assessment of the Worry About Pain Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Worry can be conceptualized as a cognitive-affective automatic process initiated in order to address uncertainty and potential personal inadequacies that could result in negative outcomes. The purpose of the current study was to develop a measure of pain-specific worry - the Worry About Pain Questionnaire (WAPQ). METHOD: In study 1, responses of 335 pain-free participants were used to complete an item analysis and exploratory factors analysis to develop and assess the internal structure of the WAPQ. Study 2 included 224 pain-free participants who completed the WAPQ in order to con

Prefrontal cortex based sex differences in tinnitus perception: same tinnitus intensity, same tinnitus distress, different mood.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus refers to auditory phantom sensation. It is estimated that for 2% of the population this auditory phantom percept severely affects the quality of life, due to tinnitus related distress. Although the overall distress levels do not differ between sexes in tinnitus, females are more influenced by distress than males. Typically, pain, sleep, and depression are perceived as significantly more severe by female tinnitus patients. Studies on gender differences in emotional regulation indicate that females with high depressive symptoms show greater attention to emotion, and use les

Risky Family Environment, Rumination, Drinking to Cope, and Problematic Alcohol Use: A Cross-National Examination Among College Students.

Objectives: This study examined the relationships between risky family environments (conflictual, controlling, or aggressive parent-child [or other family members] relations), ruminative thinking, drinking to cope (DTC), and negative alcohol-related consequences among college students across seven countries (U.S., Argentina, Canada, Uruguay, Spain, South Africa, and England). Specifically, this study aimed to examine whether a risky family environment is a risk factor for problematic alcohol use via rumination and DTC motives among college students using a cross-national approach. Method: Part

The Influence of Negative Affect on Working Memory Updating of Food Stimuli Among Adolescents With Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Difficulty updating information in working memory has been proposed to underlie ruminative thinking in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN). However, evidence regarding updating difficulties in AN remains inconclusive, particularly among adolescents. It has been proposed that exposure to negative emotion and disorder-salient stimuli may uniquely influence updating in AN. This study examined the influence of exposure to negative emotion on updating of food and non-food stimuli among adolescents with AN. METHOD: The study included 41 female adolescents with restrictive AN (M age =

A roadmap to understanding interoceptive awareness and post-traumatic stress disorder: a scoping review.

The concept of interoception has existed since the beginning of the 1900s. It is suggested that humans can observe feelings arising from the body that allows them to develop a sense of their emotional status and physical condition. The term interoceptive awareness appears to originate with clinicians working with individuals who had experienced trauma, in particular Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The purpose of this scoping review was to provide an overview of the existing literature surrounding the combination of these two themes: interoceptive awareness and PTSD. A total of 226 artic

Identity Formation in Individuals between 16 and 25 Years Old with Borderline Personality Disorder.

Background/Objectives: Identity disruption is a key feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD), characterized by disturbances in self-image. This study aimed to use the Dimensions of Identity Development Scale (DIDS) in a population aged 16-25, to assess differences in identity status and correlations with BPD features as well as whether a correlation exists between the BPD features, the scores obtained on the DIDS and the scores of the different dimensions of this disorder. Methods: We analyzed data from 132 individuals: 44 with BPD using the Diagnostic Interview for Borderline-Revised

Real-Time fMRI Functional Connectivity Neurofeedback Reducing Repetitive Negative Thinking in Depression: A Double-Blind, Randomized, Sham-Controlled Proof-of-Concept Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a cognitive process focusing on self-relevant and negative experiences, leading to a poor prognosis of major depressive disorder (MDD). We previously identified that connectivity between the precuneus/posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) and right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) was positively correlated with levels of RNT. OBJECTIVE: In this double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled, proof-of-concept trial, we employed real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging neurofeedback (rtfMRI-nf) to delineate the neural processes that may be causall

Metacognitive beliefs in depressed in-patients: adaptation and validation of the short version of the Metacognitions Questionnaire (MCQ-30) for French clinical and non-clinical samples.

BACKGROUND: The short form of the Metacognitions Questionnaire (MCQ-30) is a brief multi-dimensional measure which explores the metacognitive processes and beliefs about worry and cognition that are central to the vulnerability and maintenance of emotional disorders. AIMS: The first aim of the study was to create and validate a French version of the MCQ-30 in a non-clinical and a clinical sample of depressed in-patients. METHOD: A French adaptation of the MCQ-30 was administered to a sample of 467 individuals from the general population and 73 hospitalized patients with major depressive diso

Pain in the Context of Family: A Study on Factors Contributing to Marital Satisfaction among Couples Suffering from Chronic Pain.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is associated with increased stress in families and has its own impact on the relationship between members of the family. Among couples, if one of them suffers from chronic pain, this may influence marital satisfaction in both of them and given the importance of marital satisfaction in the prediction of successful treatment outcome, it is important to investigate pain and personality-related factors contributing to inter-individuals variation in marital satisfaction. METHODS: Participants in this study were recruited from Atieh Hospital and Rasa Pain Clinic, Tehran, I

An evidence map of psychosocial interventions for the earliest stages of bipolar disorder.

Depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder are three of the four most burdensome problems in people aged under 25 years. In psychosis and depression, psychological interventions are effective, low-risk, and high-benefit approaches for patients at high risk of first-episode or early-onset disorders. We review the use of psychological interventions for early-stage bipolar disorder in patients aged 15-25 years. Because previous systematic reviews had struggled to identify information about this emerging sphere of research, we used evidence mapping to help us identify the extent, distribution

Appraisal and coping as predictors of psychological distress and self-reported physical disability before lung transplantation.

CONTEXT: Certain appraisals and coping strategies have been associated with increased levels of psychological distress and disability in other medical populations, but no study has examined this relationship with patients who are awaiting lung transplantation. OBJECTIVE: To describe the cognitive appraisal and coping strategies used by patients who are pursuing lung transplantation and to evaluate the extent to which these processes are associated with depression, anxiety, and disability. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional design with 160 participants (42.5% men) who have end-stage lung dise

Childhood functional gastrointestinal disorders.

This is the first attempt at defining criteria for functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) in infancy, childhood, and adolescence. The decision-making process was as for adults and consisted of arriving at consensus, based on clinical experience. This paper is intended to be a quick reference. The classification system selected differs from the one used in the adult population in that it is organized according to main complaints instead of being organ-targeted. Because the child is still developing, some disorders such as toddler's diarrhea (or functional diarrhea) are linked to certain

Therapeutic Effects of Low-Dose Psilocybin in Depression and Other Mental Disorders: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: High-dose psilocybin has shown potential in treating various psychiatric disorders, but its perceptual and cognitive effects, along with the risk of adverse events, highlight the need for alternative treatment approaches. One such approach is the use of low-dose psilocybin, which does not significantly alter cognition or perception. While low-dose psilocybin has garnered growing interest in the psychiatric community, its therapeutic efficacy remains unclear and warrants further investigation. This systematic review aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of low-dose-whether in t

Effect of Psychological Intervention on Fear of Cancer Recurrence: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is a significantly distressing problem that affects a substantial number of patients with and survivors of cancer; however, the overall efficacy of available psychological interventions on FCR remains unknown. We therefore evaluated this in the present systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: We searched key electronic databases to identify trials that evaluated the effect of psychological interventions on FCR among patients with and survivors of cancer. Controlled trials were subjected to meta-analysis, and the moderating influence of study chara

Repetition is good? An Internet trial on the illusory truth effect in schizophrenia and nonclinical participants.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The investigation of cognitive biases has considerably broadened our understanding of the cognitive underpinnings of schizophrenia. This is the first study to investigate the illusory truth or validity effect in schizophrenia, which denotes the phenomenon that the renewed exposure to difficult knowledge questions shifts responses toward affirmation. We hypothesized an excess of the truth effect in schizophrenia, which may play a role in the maintenance of the disorder, particularly relating to positive symptoms. METHODS: The study was set up over the Internet. The f

Sensory-emotional-cognitive effects of resistance exercise and Tai Chi exercise in Japanese community-dwelling older adults with chronic pain: a non-randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Although Tai Chi has demonstrated efficacy in alleviating pain and improving functional mobility in people with chronic pain, the mechanisms underlying its pain-relieving effects remain poorly understood. We assessed the efficacy of a Tai Chi intervention on pain-related sensory, emotional, and cognitive indices in Japanese community-dwelling older adults with chronic pain. METHODS: A non-randomized controlled trial was conducted for 12 weeks in the community of Itoshima City, Fukuoka, Japan. Adults aged ≥ 60 years with chronic pain were recruited and allocated to an intervention

Coping strategies, illness perceptions, and relationship dynamics contribute to female sexual function and sexual distress in Sjögren's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Sexual dysfunction and sexual distress are common complaints for women with the autoimmune rheumatic disease Sjögren's syndrome (SS); however, the role of psychosocial and interpersonal factors has not previously been explored in SS. AIM: This study investigated whether psychosocial variables, such as coping strategies, illness perceptions, and relationship dynamics, contributed to sexual function and sexual distress for women with SS. METHODS: Participants with SS completed an online cross-sectional survey that included prevalidated questionnaires assessing sexual function, sexu

Dissociated deficits of anticipated and experienced regret in at-risk suicidal individuals.

BACKGROUNDS: Decision-making deficits have been reported as trans-diagnostic characteristics of vulnerability to suicidal behaviors, independent of co-existing psychiatric disorders. Individuals with suicidal behaviors often regret their decision to attempt suicide and may have impairments in future-oriented processing. However, it is not clear how people with suicidal dispositions use future-oriented cognition and past experience of regret to guide decision-making. Here, we examined the processes of regret anticipation and experience in subclinical youth with and without suicidal ideation dur

Individual Dimensions of Pain Catastrophizing Do Not Mediate the Effect of Sociodemographic and Psychological Factors on Chronic Orofacial Pain Severity, Interference, and Jaw Limitation: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach.

Pain catastrophization (PC), involving rumination, magnification, and helplessness, can be viewed as a coping strategy associated with chronic pain. PC is considered a driving force in mediating pain-related outcomes, but it is still unclear whether PC mediates the relationship between psychological and sociodemographic factors with chronic pain when considered in a single model. Using baseline data from a parent study, this study examined the effect of positive and negative psychological and sociodemographic factors on pain severity, interference, and jaw limitation mediated by the PC dimensi
