Outcome assessment of lingual and labial appliances compared with cephalometric analysis, peer assessment rating, and objective grading system in Angle Class II extraction cases.

OBJECTIVE: To validate our hypothesis that there would be significant differences in treatment outcomes, including cephalometric values, degree of root resorption, occlusal indices, and functional aspect, between cases treated with labial and lingual appliances. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four consecutively treated Class II cases with extractions and lingual appliance were compared with 25 matched cases treated with extraction and labial appliance. Orthodontic treatment outcomes were evaluated by cephalometric analysis, peer assessment rating, and an objective grading system (OGS). Additio

Maintenance after a complex orthoperio treatment in a case of generalized aggressive periodontitis: 7-year result.

BACKGROUND: Generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP) encompasses a distinct type of periodontal disease exhibiting much more rapid periodontal tissue destruction than chronic periodontitis. The best method for management of GAgP may include the use of both regenerative periodontal techniques and the administration of systemic antibiotics. METHODS: The treatment of a case of GAgP over a period of 6.7 years is presented in this case report. Initial periodontal therapy (week 1- 32) consisted of supragingival plaque control and three appointments of scaling and root planing. Based on the perio

[Dentofacial Orthopedics to treat facial asymmetries before six years of age. How to balance craniofacial growth and enhance temporomandibular function].

Minor facial asymmetries that can be detected in newborn infants indicate that facial growth for this child will also be asymmetric. When practitioners observe a displacement of the mandible in temporary dentition it probably indicates the presence of asymmetric masticatory function and they should look for an inter-temporal axial asymmetry by tracing cutaneous landmarks in the vicinity of the external ears. If they find the possible presence of asymmetric remodeling of glenoid fossas, they have to anticipate future temporo-mandibular disorders. By using a measurement grid (Orthogrille type) p

An interdisciplinary approach to the management of complex medical and dental conditions.

Dental and medical practice often requires an interdisciplinary approach integrating the knowledge, skills and experience of all the disciplines of dentistry, medicine and its associated fields into comprehensive treatment to maximize results. Rapid and comprehensive scientific and technological advances have made it difficult for dental and medical practitioners to keep up to date in their fields; thus, to decrease practitioner frustration and increase patient benefits, an interdisciplinary approach has become essential. This report illustrates how therapy was coordinated for a young medicall

Headgear versus function regulator in the early treatment of Class II, division 1 malocclusion: a randomized clinical trial.

A prospective randomized clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the early treatment of Class II, Division 1 malocclusion in prepubertal children. Facial and occlusal changes after treatment with either a headgear or a Fränkel function regulator are reported. Molar and canine relationships, overjet, intermolar and intercanine distances were measured from casts taken every 2 months, and mounted on a SAM II articulator. Cephalometric radiographs were taken annually. The results indicate that both the headgear and function regulator were effective in correcting the malocclusion. A common mode of

Expanding torque possibilities: A skeletally anchored torqued cantilever for uprighting "kissing molars".

Several uprighting mechanics and devices have been used for repositioning tipped molars. "Kissing molars" (KMs) are an uncommon tooth impaction involving 2 severely tipped mandibular molars with their occlusal surfaces positioned crown to crown, with the roots pointing in opposite directions. Orthodontic uprighting of KMs has not been a usual treatment protocol, and it can be a challenging task due to the severe tipping and double impaction, requiring efficient and well-controlled uprighting mechanics. An innovative skeletally anchored cantilever, which uses the torque principle for uprighting

Removable dentures are always transient current. The epidemiology and causes of tooth gaps demonstrate the need to master the different prosthetic treatment. This made whether to propose treatment plans that take into account psychological, physiological and technical support for this patient. Different situations may arise. A gradual transition may be considered or immediate passage to the total edentulous according to general criteria, local and desiderata of patients. After tooth extraction, the transitional prosthesis can control bone lysis thereby it is part of a complete treatment before
