Bartonella Species Identified in Rodent and Feline Hosts from Island and Mainland Western Australia.

Bacteria of the genus Bartonella have been described in multiple mammalian hosts with many species capable of causing disease in humans. Cats and various species of rats have been reported to play a role as vertebrate hosts to a number of Bartonella spp. This study aimed to identify Bartonella spp. in Western Australia, Dirk Hartog Island (DHI), and Christmas Island (CI) and to investigate the presence of potential arthropod vectors. Feral cats were collected from CI (n = 35), DHI (n = 23) and southwest Western Australia (swWA; n = 58), and black rats were collected from CI (n = 48). Individua

Activity of doramectin against nematode and arthropod parasites of swine.

The efficacy of doramectin, a novel avermectin, was assessed against both naturally-acquired and experimentally-induced infections of gastrointestinal roundworms, lungworms, kidneyworms, lice and mites in studies conducted across North America and Europe. Twenty-two studies evaluated efficacy against fourth larval and adult stages of the following nematode species: Hyostrongylus rubidus, Ascaris suum, Strongyloides ransomi, Oesophagostomum dentatum, Oesophagostomum quadrispinulatum, Trichuris suis, Metastrongylus spp. and Stephanurus dentatus. Efficacy was evaluated against the louse Haematopi

Evidence that clade A and clade B head lice live in sympatry and recombine in Algeria.

Pediculus humanus L. (Psocodea: Pediculidae) can be characterized into three deeply divergent lineages (clades) based on mitochondrial DNA. Clade A consists of both head lice and clothing lice and is distributed worldwide. Clade B consists of head lice only and is mainly found in North and Central America, and in western Europe and Australia. Clade C, which consists only of head lice, is found in Ethiopia, Nepal and Senegal. Twenty-six head lice collected from pupils at different elementary schools in two localities in Algiers (Algeria) were analysed using molecular methods for genotyping lice

Tocopheryl acetate 20% spray for elimination of head louse infestation: a randomised controlled trial comparing with 1% permethrin creme rinse.

BACKGROUND: Tocopheryl acetate is viscous oily fluid used in a range of preparations for skin and scalp care in Italy. Observational and in vitro data have suggested a high level of efficacy against head louse infestation. The purpose of this investigation was to confirm the activity of tocopheryl acetate in a clinical setting in comparison with a standard widely used preparation. METHODS: A spray formulation containing tocopheryl acetate 20% in cyclomethicone was compared with permethrin 1% creme rinse for treatment of head louse infestation in a randomised, assessor blind, trial. Cutaneous cytokine gene expression and cellular responses in lambs infested with the louse, Bovicola ovis, and following intradermal injection of crude louse antigen.

The present study was undertaken to investigate further the immunological responses in the skin of lambs to natural louse infestation and following intradermal allergen challenge. Bovicola ovis-infested (n=7) and naïve (n=7) Romney lambs received four intradermal injections each of crude louse Ag and diluent control solutions on the dorso-lateral chest. From each lamb, skin samples were obtained from untreated skin and, at 4, 24, 48 and 72 h following injection, from one each of the Ag- and diluent-injected skin sites. Levels of acetylcholinesterase-positive Langerhans and MHC II(+) cells in t

Clinical diagnosis of common scalp disorders.

Scalp skin is unique on the body due to the density of hair follicles and high rate of sebum production. These features make it susceptible to superficial mycotic conditions (dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and tinea capitis), parasitic infestation (pediculosis capitis), and inflammatory conditions (psoriasis). Because these scalp conditions share similar clinical manifestations of scaling, inflammation, hair loss, and pruritus, differential diagnosis is critically important. Diagnostic techniques and effective treatment strategies for each of the above conditions will be discussed.

Seasonality trends of Pediculosis capitis and Phthirus pubis in a young adult population: follow-up of 20 years.

BACKGROUND: It is not mandatory to report Pediculosis capitis and Phthirus pubis in most countries; therefore, little is known about the seasonality of these infestations. METHODS: We analysed the data based on routine and mandatory reporting of every case of Pediculosis capitis and Phthirus pubis to the Army Health Branch Epidemiology Department, Israel, over the last two decades. RESULTS: The average 20-year incidence of Pediculosis capitis shows a significant rise during the warmer months (R2 = 0.692, P < 0.05) with a parallel significant decrease in the cooler months (R2 = 0.893, P < 0.0

Sexually transmitted diseases in rape victims.

From 1 January 1986 to 1 September 1989 124 women presented to the Ambrose King Centre (the department of genitourinary medicine of the London Hospital) alleging rape. Sexually transmitted diseases were found in 36 (29%) women (excluding candidosis and bacterial vaginosis). The commonest organisms detected were Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Trichomonas vaginalis, each being present in 15 patients. Eleven women had genital warts. Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated in six patients, two had herpes simplex virus infection and one patient had pediculosis pubis. Serological evidence of past hepatitis B

Dermatologic problems in athletes.

The dermatologic problems observed in athletes are related to their skin type, age, sex, sporting activities, environment, and hereditary factors. The most common dermatologic problems are acne; bacterial, fungal, and viral infections; infestations, and contact dermatitis. The dermatologic conditions that exclude an athlete from participating in the sporting event are infectious disorders. Early recognition and treatment of these skin diseases permit the athlete to continue participation without disability or reduced performance.

Phthiriasis palpebrarum, thelaziasis, and ophthalmomyiasis.

INTRODUCTION: Parasitic infections of the eye are a major cause of ocular-surface diseases globally. While most infections are treatable, parasites can cause varying levels of damage mostly due to late diagnosis or misdiagnosis as a result of doctors' unfamiliarity with their characteristics of latency and crypsis, as well as lack of awareness by the patients. CASE REPORTS: In this study, we present three cases of phthiriasis palpebrarum, thelaziasis, and ophthalmomyiasis, respectively. Two of the cases were treated at the clinic and did not recur. One patient refused treatment and was lost t

Impact of infectious exposures and outbreaks on nurse and infection preventionist workload.

BACKGROUND: Staff nurse and infection preventionist (IP) workload increases in response to exposures and outbreaks. Understanding the time burden associated with responding to specific pathogens may improve resource allocation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate workload increases reported by nurses and IPs in response to common exposures and outbreaks. METHODS: Surveys were distributed to nurses in a New York hospital network and to IPs who attended the 2018 Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology annual conference or to IPs who were members of local Associ

Are scabies and impetigo "normalised"? A cross-sectional comparative study of hospitalised children in northern Australia assessing clinical recognition and treatment of skin infections.

BACKGROUND: Complications of scabies and impetigo such as glomerulonephritis and invasive bacterial infection in Australian Aboriginal children remain significant problems and the overall global burden of disease attributable to these skin infections remains high despite the availability of effective treatment. We hypothesised that one factor contributing to this high burden is that skin infection is under-recognised and hence under-treated, in settings where prevalence is high. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, cross-sectional study to assess the burden of scabies, impetigo, tinea and ped
