[Intestinal parasitoses in the prison population in the Madrid area (1991-1993)].

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitoses are frequent in populations in tropical and subtropical areas, HIV infection has favoured an increase in the prevalence of some of these parasitoses . Both conditions concur in innate populations. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of the intestinal parasitosis in a penitentiary population from the Madrid area. METHODS: On the basis of the data from the Laboratory of Clinical Microbiology in the Hospital General Penitenciario, patients with the diagnosis of intestinal parasitosis were retrospectively reviewed.

Anthelmintics.

This article describes the drugs used in helminthic infections and their therapeutic indications, mode of action, toxicity and other details of each of the recommended drugs, and discusses the nature and treatment of infection by helminths important in human medicine. Infestation due to the roundworms Enterobius vermicularis, Ascaris lumbricoides and the hookworms, Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus can all be treated effectively with pyrantel pamoate. For Enterobius vermicularis, however, a newer drug, mebendazole, is equally as effective. The advantage of these drugs in the indicat

The enhancive effect of the 2014-2016 El Niño-induced drought on the control of soil-transmitted helminthiases without anthelmintics: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthiases (STHs) are common in tropical and subtropical regions. Southern Thailand experiences an extended rainy season, leading to persistently moist soil. This condition supports the life cycle of STHs, hindering effective control due to reinfection and low drug efficacy. We implemented a novel STH control strategy during the dry season aimed at decreasing reinfection rates without enhancing sanitation or hygiene practices. However, there were unexpected, prolonged droughts linked to El Niño events from 2014 to 2016. Additionally, we assessed the effects of t

Risk mapping and socio-ecological drivers of soil-transmitted helminth infections in the Philippines: a spatial modelling study.

BACKGROUND: The Philippines reports a high prevalence of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections despite the implementation of nationwide mass drug administration since 2006. The spatial variation of STH infections in the Philippines was last described using the 2005-2007 national STH and schistosomiasis survey. This study aimed to identify sociodemographic and environmental factors that drive STH transmission and predict high-risk areas in the Philippines. METHODS: Epidemiological data on STH for students aged 5-16 years were obtained from the 2015 Philippines National Prevalence survey,

Diagnostic accuracy of nucleic acid amplification tests for human intestinal nematode infections: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The use of diverse diagnostic methods in the absence of a definitive gold standard makes it challenging to determine the most appropriate test for diagnosing human intestinal nematode infections (HINIs), particularly across various clinical settings with varying endemicity. The ideal diagnostic method should be feasible, cost-effective, and accurate. This review evaluates the diagnostic accuracy of nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs), comparing them to the Kato-Katz (KK) and flotation methods for the detection of ascariasis, trichuriasis, and hookworm infection, the Baermann

Capillaria boehmi (syn. Eucoleus boehmi): Challenging treatment of a rarely diagnosed nasal nematode in dogs and high prevalence in Swiss foxes.

Despite morphological differences of eggs and adults, Capillaria boehmi infections have been occasionally misdiagnosed as C. aerophila infections in the past. Capillaria boehmi is found in the nasal and paranasal sinuses of wild canids and dogs, which may suffer from nasal discharge, sneezing, epistaxis and, importantly, their scent can be impaired. In this study we present three challenging cases of nasal capillariosis in dogs, report and review the variable success of anthelmintic treatments and investigate C. boehmi prevalence in Swiss red foxes, considered as potential wild life reservoir.

[Detection of Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis in cyst samples using a novel single tube multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction].

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) and alveolar echinococcosis (AE) caused by Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis, respectively, are important helminthic diseases worldwide as well as in our country. Epidemiological studies conducted in Turkey showed that the prevalence of CE is 291-585/100.000. It has also been showed that the seroprevalence of AE is 3.5%. For the diagnosis of CE and AE, radiological (ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance) and serological methods, in addition to clinical findings, are being used. The definitive diagnosis relies on pathological e

Prevalence and risk factors of intestinal parasitism among two indigenous sub-ethnic groups in Peninsular Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) among indigenous people have been widely documented in Malaysia, however, the prevalence of these infections remains high. In the past, most studies have focused on specific species of parasites but polyparasitism has received limited attention. In addition, epidemiology studies on indigenous people tend to consider them as a homogenous group, whereas in reality different sub-ethnic groups have different cultural and living practices. Variations in living habits such as personal hygiene practices may predispose different groups to different pa

Comparison of Ritchie and Kato-Katz methods for the detection of intestinal helminths in humans: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Comparative evidence on the diagnostic performance of Formalin-Ether Concentration (FEC) versus the Kato-Katz thick smear (KK) for detecting intestinal helminths in humans remains inconsistent. This systematic review and meta-analysis compared the odds of detecting intestinal helminths using FEC versus the single-slide KK. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across six databases (PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, Nursing and Allied Health Premium, and Ovid). Eligible studies directly compared FEC with single-slide KK for stool examination. Data was extracted using a s

Contribution to the Knowledge of Gastrointestinal Nematodes in Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) from the Province of León, Spain: An Epidemiological and Molecular Study.

A study of gastrointestinal nematodes in roe deer was carried out in the regional hunting reserves of Riaño and Mampodre, Province of León, Spain, to provide information on their prevalence and intensity of infection in relation to the sampling areas, age of the animals, and body weight. Through a regulated necropsy of the animals, all of them harbored gastrointestinal nematodes in their digestive tract, with a mean intensity of parasitism of 638 ± 646.1 nematodes/infected animal. Eleven genera were found and 18 species of gastrointestinal nematodes were identified, three of them polymorphic:

Diagnostic performance of a Strongyloides IgG4 Rapid Test in detecting human Strongyloides stercoralis infection.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) affect more than 1 billion people worldwide. Due to the morbidity in children caused by the accumulation of infections with these parasites, the World Health Organization (WHO) developed deworming programs to reduce worm burden, providing guidelines for Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and hookworms, since they are diagnosed and treated using the same tools. Recently, the WHO has provided guidelines for Strongyloides stercoralis, given it requires specific tools for diagnosis and treatment, with the goal to reduce prevalence and encourage
