Advancing the concept of technical ability of force application in sprint acceleration.

Technical ability of force application (sagittal force vector orientation) is considered a performance determinant in sprint acceleration, yet the underlying kinematics require further investigation. Sixteen elite male bobsleigh athletes performed unresisted and resisted (85 kg sled push) accelerations initiated with full effort, while ground reaction forces and kinematics were recorded for ground contacts 1 to 5. Ratio of forces (RF), body position, centre of mass velocity components, and lower limb segment rotations were examined for correlations and differences between acceleration tasks. R

Cannabis Use and Age-Related Acceleration of Psychosis Onset: A Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Increases in cannabis use, potency, and legal liberalization have raised concerns about psychiatric consequences. Previous studies suggest an association between cannabis use and earlier age at onset (AAO) of psychosis, but an updated meta-analysis is needed. METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycInfo were searched from inception to April 2025. Peer-reviewed cohort and case-control studies reporting mean and standard deviation of AAO of psychosis in cannabis users and nonusers or other effect size data were included. Pooled standardized mean difference was calculated using random-effe

The mediating role of insulin resistance in depression driving phenotypic age acceleration.

BACKGROUND: Depression, characterized by significant psychological and physiological alterations, has been proved to tightly associate with insulin resistance (IR) and hallmarks of biological aging. Phenotypic Age Acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel), which quantifies the discrepancy between biological and chronological age, serves as a robust indicator of accelerated aging. However, the interplay between depression, IR, and accelerated aging remains unclear. This study aims to explore the relationship between depression and PhenoAgeAccel, and the potential mediating role of IR in this association. M

Acceleration of polymer capture and translocation in oscillatory channels at certain frequencies.

Elucidating the dynamic mechanisms of polymer translocation through nanochannels with channel oscillation characterized by periodic opening and closing is critical for advancing the understanding of polymer transport in confined environments and guiding the design of advanced nanofluidic systems. We employed coupled molecular dynamics and multi-particle collision dynamics simulations to investigate the influence of channel oscillation on polymer capture and translocation in varying dielectric environments. The capture probability and translocation time of polymers consistently exhibit a non-mo

Forensic medical analysis of closed head acceleration-deceleration injuries: a narrative review.

A key classification of closed head injuries, particularly relevant for reconstructing trauma biomechanics and of greatest medicolegal importance, is the distinction between contact injuries and acceleration-deceleration injuries. The two most characteristic acceleration-deceleration injuries are acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) and diffuse axonal injury (DAI), which both arise from acceleration forces applied to the head but differ in the duration of these forces. ASDH typically results from rapid deceleration against a firm surface, as occurs in falls, falls accompanied by blows, or traffic ac

MORC2 facilitates cholangiocarcinoma progression through cell cycle acceleration and immune microenvironment modification.

This study explored a novel therapeutic target, MORC2 (Microrchidia family CW-type zinc finger 2), for patients with unresectable advanced Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), a lethal epithelial cell malignancy lacking effective treatments. Utilizing bioinformatics analysis, we examined MORC2's role in CCA progression. The focus was on its association with the cell cycle and its involvement in the tumor's immunosuppressive microenvironment. MORC2 was found to accelerate CCA cell proliferation by promoting cell cycle progression through the activation of TNF-α signaling via the NFKB signaling pathway. Fu

Diagnostic Test Accuracy of Pedal Acceleration Time to Identify Peripheral Artery Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Pedal acceleration time (PAT) is a novel method of using diagnostic ultrasound to evaluate the haemodynamic characteristics of pedal arteries and has potential as an adjunctive vascular testing method. The primary objective of this study was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of PAT in identifying peripheral artery disease (PAD) in a population with clinically suspected PAD. METHODS: This was a multicentre cross sectional study to estimate the diagnostic test accuracy. Participants with clinically suspected PAD were recruited via consecutive sampling at four centres. Using Pedal Acceleration Time To Predict Ischemic Wound Healing In Diabetic Patients.

AIM: Diabetes Mellitus is one of the main factors for peripheral arterial disease (PAD), while also being associated with medial arterial calcification, thus limiting the use of the ankle-brachial index. Pedal acceleration time (PAT), has emerged as a diagnostic alternative, by measuring the systolic acceleration in the arteries of the foot, with higher PAT values corresponding to a worse prognosis and with the literature suggesting a cut-off of 180 ms as a predictor of wound healing. We aimed to confirm whether we could use PAT to predict wound healing, need for revascularization and amputati

Acceleration Data Reveal Behavioural Responses to Hunting Risk in Scandinavian Brown Bears.

Predation may indirectly influence prey's fitness and population dynamics through behavioural adjustments in response to perceived predation risk. These non-consumptive effects of predation can also arise from hunting by humans, but they remain less documented. Advances in biologging allow detailed assessments of the activity budgets of elusive wildlife, increasing the potential to uncover the non-consumptive effects of human activities on animals. We used tri-axial accelerometry to record the daily activity of 24 Scandinavian brown bears (20 females and 4 males) from a heavily hunted populati

Associations Between Training Load and Acceleration-Speed Profile in Youth Soccer Athletes.

Soccer requires athletes to exhibit high levels of acceleration and speed, both of which are crucial for optimal performance. The acceleration-speed (A-S) profile is increasingly utilized to assess these sprinting capacities in soccer, providing in situ insights into an athlete's maximal theoretical acceleration (A0) and speed (S0). This study aimed to investigate the association of external load metrics with A0 and S0 across different age groups in elite academy soccer athletes. One hundred thirty-six athletes, ranging from under-14 to B-team, participated in the study. Training sessions and

Establishing reliable acceleration-speed profiles: Minimum data requirements in rugby union matches.

The aim of this study was to determine the minimum playing time in matches required to produce reliable acceleration - speed (AS) profiles from global navigation satellite system (GNSS) data. The playing time of 25 professional rugby union players was recorded using GNSS technology and segmented into four sections from 40, 80, 120 and 160 minutes of play. For each interval, the impact of integrating new match data on the AS profile was assessed, aiming to identify the saturation point where additional data did not induce significant changes in the profile outputs. A repeated measures ANOVA and

Predicting Rail Corrugation Based on Convolutional Neural Networks Using Vehicle's Acceleration Measurements.

This paper presents a deep learning approach for predicting rail corrugation based on on-board rolling-stock vertical acceleration and forward velocity measurements using One-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN-1D). The model's performance is examined in a 1:10 scale railway system at two different forward velocities. During both the training and test stages, the CNN-1D produced results with mean absolute percentage errors of less than 5% for both forward velocities, confirming its ability to reproduce the corrugation profile based on real-time acceleration and forward velocity meas

Acceleration of moyamoya disease after anti-vascular endothelial growth factor intravitreal injections.

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a rare, progressive, irreversible vaso-occlusive disease affecting the cerebral vasculature. The progressive occlusion of blood vessels leads to the development of collateral vessels to compensate for the insufficient blood supply. Some growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) may cause excessive and aberrant angiogenesis in MMD. We report a case of a 55-year-old male, following up in retina clinics for diabetic retinopathy and macular edema who received anti-VEGF agents then he presented to the emergency room with left-sided face and body weak

Diagnostic accuracy of the maximal systolic acceleration to detect peripheral arterial disease.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing peripheral arterial disease (PAD) can be challenging owing to medial arterial calcification (MAC) in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Current bedside tests, such as the ankle-brachial index and toe-brachial index, are often insufficient. The maximal systolic acceleration (ACCmax) is a velocimetric Doppler-derived parameter and could be a new promising test in the diagnostic workup of these patients. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the ACCmax to detect PAD. METHODS: A retrospective cohort s

Higher Acceleration/Ejection Time Ratio Predicts Impaired Outcome in Aortic Valve Stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Acceleration time (AT)/ejection time (ET) ratio is a marker of aortic valve stenosis (AS) severity and predicts outcome in moderate-severe AS. METHODS: We explored the association of increased AT/ET ratio on prognosis in 1530 asymptomatic patients with presumably mild-moderate AS, normal ejection fraction, and without known diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Patients were part of the SEAS study (Simvastatin Ezetimibe Aortic Stenosis). Patients were grouped according to the optimal AT/ET ratio threshold to predict cardiovascular death and heart failure hospitalization. Low-gradien

Cardioprotective Effect of Whole Body Periodic Acceleration in Dystrophic Phenotype mdx Rodent.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is characterized by progressive muscle wasting and the development of a dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), which is the leading cause of death in DMD patients. Despite knowing the cause of DMD, there are currently no therapies which can prevent or reverse its inevitable progression. We have used whole body periodic acceleration (WBPA) as a novel tool to enhance intracellular constitutive nitric oxide (NO) production. WBPA adds small pulses to the circulation to increase pulsatile shear stress, thereby upregulating endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and neuron

Evidence for Biological Age Acceleration and Telomere Shortening in COVID-19 Survivors.

The SARS-CoV-2 infection determines the COVID-19 syndrome characterized, in the worst cases, by severe respiratory distress, pulmonary and cardiac fibrosis, inflammatory cytokine release, and immunosuppression. This condition has led to the death of about 2.15% of the total infected world population so far. Among survivors, the presence of the so-called persistent post-COVID-19 syndrome (PPCS) is a common finding. In COVID-19 survivors, PPCS presents one or more symptoms: fatigue, dyspnea, memory loss, sleep disorders, and difficulty concentrating. In this study, a cohort of 117 COVID-19 survi

Relationship between pulmonary artery acceleration time and pulmonary artery pressures in infants.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary artery acceleration time measured by echocardiography inversely correlates with pulmonary artery pressures in adults and children older than 1 year of age. There is a paucity of data investigating this relationship in young children, particularly among preterm infants. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the relationship between pulmonary artery acceleration time (PAAT) and pulmonary artery pressures in infants. DESIGN/METHODS: Patients ≤ 1 year of age at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia between 2011 and 2017 were reviewed. Infants with congenital heart disease were excluded,
