OBJECTIVE: To examine the relative importance of sedentarism and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity for adiposity development in children and adolescents.
STUDY DESIGN: A total of 277 boys and 277 girls (95% white; two-thirds of parents with college graduation or higher education) from the Iowa Bone Development Cohort Study completed body fat and accelerometry measurement at examinations of 8, 11, 13, and/or 15 years of age (during 2000-2009). The main exposure was accelerometry-measured sedentary time, frequency of breaks in sedentary time, and moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical ac

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that people with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) would benefit from increased physical activity. Yet, to date, we do not have disease-specific activity guidelines for LSS, and the nature of free-living physical activity (performance) in LSS remains unknown. LSS care providers could endorse the 2008 United States Physical Activity Guidelines; however, we do not know if this is realistic. The goal of the present study was to determine the proportion of individuals with LSS meeting the 2008 Guidelines. A secondary goal was to better understand the nature of physical per

OBJECTIVE: To test the effect of different forearm postures on tremor characteristics. We hypothesized that changes in tremor characteristics in relation to posture can subclassify essential tremor (ET) patients.
METHODS: Fourteen ET patients were tested while seated and holding a full cup in three well-defined arm postures: 15 cm above the armrest, elbow at 90 degrees flexion and when the cup was near the mouth. Hand movements were recorded using a triaxial accelerometer. Concomitantly, we recorded surface electromyogram (EMG) signals from the wrist extensor muscles. Hand acceleration and th

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: LAMA2-related muscular dystrophy (LAMA2-MD) is a rare neuromuscular disease characterized by proximal and axial muscle weakness, rigidity of the spine, scoliosis, and respiratory impairment. No curative treatment options exist, yet promising preclinical studies are ongoing. Currently, there is a paucity on natural history data, and appropriate clinical and functional outcome measures are needed. We aim for deep clinical phenotyping, establishment of a well-characterized baseline cohort for prospective follow-up and recruitment for future clinical trials, improvement

BACKGROUND: South Asians are one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in western countries with a high incidence of chronic diseases like metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease occurring at younger ages and lower body weight compared with white Europeans. Physically active lifestyle and reduced sedentary time are modifiable risk factors that can decrease burden of chronic diseases. Population-level surveys based on self-report show South Asians engage in low levels of physical activity. Because of known limitations with self-report data, we aimed to synthesize available evidence to gene

The purpose of this study was two-fold: (1) to determine the sensitivity of the sEMG shorts-derived training load (sEMG-TL) during different running speeds; and (2) to investigate the relationship between the oxygen consumption, heart rate (HR), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), accelerometry-based PlayerLoadTM (PL), and sEMG-TL during a running maximum oxygen uptake (V˙O2max) test. The study investigated ten healthy participants. On day one, participants performed a three-speed treadmill test at 8, 10, and 12 km·h-1 for 2 min at each speed. On day two, participants performed a V˙O2max test.

BACKGROUND: Walking capacity tests are commonly used to evaluate interventions aiming at reducing walking impairment in people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). However, their ecological validity has recently been questioned. The aim of the present study was to investigate the ecological validity of the 2- and 6-minutes walking tests (2MWT and 6MWT) and the timed 25-foot walk (T25FW) after 28 days of multidisciplinary inpatient rehabilitation (MIR) in pwMS using accelerometry.
METHODS: PwMS wore an accelerometer on 7 consecutive days within a 14-day period prior to MIR, performed 2/6MWT and T25

Tremor is a common side effect of tacrolimus correlated with peak-dose drug concentration. LCPT, a novel, once-daily, extended-release formulation of tacrolimus, has a reduced Cmax with comparable AUC exposure, requiring a ~30% dose reduction vs. immediate-release tacrolimus. In this phase 3b study, kidney transplant recipients (KTR) on a stable dose of tacrolimus and with a reported clinically significant tremor were offered a switch to LCPT. Tremor pre- and seven d post-conversion was evaluated by independent, blinded movement disorder neurologists using the Fahn-Tolosa-Marin (FTM) scale and

The Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders (LIFE) Study is a Phase III randomized controlled clinical trial (Clinicaltrials.gov identifier: NCT01072500) that will provide definitive evidence regarding the effect of physical activity (PA) on major mobility disability in older adults (70-89 years old) who have compromised physical function. This paper describes the methods employed in the delivery of the LIFE Study PA intervention, providing insight into how we promoted adherence and monitored the fidelity of treatment. Data are presented on participants' motives and self-perception

OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety and efficacy of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) for essential tremor (ET).
METHODS: This was a pilot open-treatment trial at three centers, with masked videotape tremor assessments. Inclusion required a severity score of 3 or 4 on the Tremor Rating Scale (TRS) in one or both hands. At baseline, tremor was assessed with TRS and Unified Tremor Rating Assessment (UTRA), accelerometry, and a videotape protocol. The VNS device was implanted with leads placed around the left cervical vagus nerve. Stimulation was adjusted over 4 weeks before the repeat tremor assessment

Tremor is frequently encountered in neurologic practice. Clinical examination supplies information regarding its approximative frequency, regularity, amplitude, topography and activation conditions. The neurophysiological study helps in confirming the tremor, in differentiating it from other movement disorders like myoclonus, and may provide distinctive features which are important for the aetiological diagnosis. The neurophysiological investigation includes accelerometry, which analyses the mechanics of the movement. Spectral analysis with FFT allows the determination of frequency and amplitu

Children with unilateral cerebral palsy (uCP) experience pronounced sensorimotor impairments on one side of the body, impacting upper limb (UL) use and leisure participation. This study compares UL performance in children with uCP and typically developing (TD) children and examines, within the uCP group, the association between UL capacity, UL performance, and leisure participation. Twenty-one children with uCP (age: 11.2 ± 1.8 years) and 30 TD children (age: 10.6 ± 2.1 years) were recruited. UL performance was measured using accelerometry and expressed in activity counts per minute, UL capaci

OBJECTIVES: The kindergarten outdoor environment is considered a key factor influencing children's moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). However, existing findings remain inconsistent, with varying criteria and no synthesis.
METHODS: Associations came from studies employing two common measurement methods: accelerometry and direct observation. Fixed- or random-effects models were applied to calculate pooled correlation coefficients. A systematic search of six databases for studies published 2000-2024 identified 17 articles, and 9 met the inclusion criteria for meta-analysis. All outdo

OBJECTIVES: Pain has been known to predict low physical activity (PA) in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and high levels of pain are related to maladaptive coping rather than disease severity. Objectively monitored PA in JIA has recently been shown not to be related to pain intensity, emphasizing the need to explore pain more deeply. The aim of this study was to examine accelerometer-assessed PA in relation to pain cognition in children with JIA.
METHOD: Data gathered included disease activity, functional ability, and pain cognition. PA was monitored with a GT1M Actigraph accelerometer.

Background: Epileptic seizures are caused by abnormal brain wave hypersynchronization leading to a range of signs and symptoms. Tools for detecting seizures in everyday life typically focus on cardiac rhythm, electrodermal activity, or movement (EMG, accelerometry); however, these modalities are not very effective for non-motor seizures. Ultra long-term subcutaneous EEG-devices can detect the electrographic changes that do not depend on clinical changes. Nonetheless, this also means that it is not possible to assess whether a seizure is clinical or subclinical based on an EEG signal alone. The

We report on 2 essential tremor patients who experienced marked improvement in upper extremity tremor with the use of pregabalin (Lyrica, PGB). On PGB 200 mg/day, tremor amplitude was reduced by at least 40% in the worst affected hand in both patients as measured by accelerometry. Both patients also reported moderate reduction in tremor on the Clinical Global Impression Scale, and Fahn-Tolosa-Marin Part I scores were markedly improved.

Overall dynamic body acceleration (ODBA) is widely used as a proxy for movement activity. However, for large, slow-moving animals such as cetaceans, ODBA is dominated by orientational shifts rather than dynamic movements. We argue for using stroke rate frequency as an alternative to ODBA and present a method for estimating stroke rate from acceleration data, using narwhals as a case study. The resulting stroke rates aligned with diving phases and depths, where gliding is expected to be prevalent. The results were also competitive with state-of-the-art magnetometer-assisted approaches. The meth

Seated postural control is essential for wheelchair users to maintain proper position while performing activities of daily living. Clinical tests are commonly used to measure seated postural control, yet they are subjective and lack sensitivity. Lab-based measures are highly sensitive but are limited in scope and restricted to research settings. Establishing a valid, reliable, and accessible measurement tool of seated postural control is necessary for remote, objective assessments. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the validity, reliability, and sensitivity of smartphone-base

Monitoring physiological indicators including heart rate (HR) is crucial for managing animal welfare across diverse settings, from precision livestock farming to wildlife conservation. HR is a reliable indicator of energy expenditure and stress, yet the invasive nature of HR loggers limits their application in wild and free-ranging species. This study explores whether overall dynamic body acceleration (ODBA), measured with an external accelerometer, can serve as a less invasive proxy for HR. Using free-ranging cattle as a model species in Norway, we examined the relationship between ODBA and H

Anti-gravity treadmills have been used in rehabilitation to manipulate exposure to loading and to prescribe return to outside running. Analysis is typically restricted to the vertical plane, but tri-axial accelerometry facilitates multi-planar analysis with relevance to injury mechanism. In this case a professional male soccer player, 4 weeks post-operative surgery to repair a medial meniscectomy, 8 months after Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction to the same knee, completed anti-gravity treadmill running at 70-95% bodyweight (BW) at 5% increments. Tri-axial accelerometers were placed pr
