Risk factors for unnatural death: Fatal accidental intoxication, undetermined intent and suicide: Register follow-up in a criminal justice population with substance use problems.

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for suicide and fatal accidental intoxication are extensively studied, while risk factors for intoxications/injuries of undetermined intent are less well known. The latter have shown an overlap with suicides, but also with fatal accidental intoxications. The objective was to analyze potential differences and similarities in the patterns of risk factors for accidental intoxications, injuries/intoxications with undetermined intent, and suicides, respectively. METHODS: A follow-up register study was conducted, using data from ASI interviews with clients in the criminal j

High-voltage electrocution-induced pulmonary injury and cerebellar hemorrhage with fractures in atlas.

BACKGROUND: Electrocution is a common cause of mild to severe multisystem injuries leading to high rate of mortality and morbidity. Low to high-voltage injury may be clinically manifested from a simple unpleasant sensation to multiple soft tissue injury which may cause instant death. The severity of injury depends on intensity of the electrical current, voltage of the source, resistance in the victims' body and the duration of the contact. CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old young male experienced with an accidental high-voltage electrocution injury from a blasted electrical transformer while pa

[Head injuries in children].

Trauma is the reason for 40-60% of emergency callouts concerning children. Approximately half of the children have head injuries. As for adults early recognition of findings indicating an intervention are decisive for the prognosis. In children head injury can be divided into three categories: birth trauma, accidental and non-accidental trauma. This article concentrates on accidental trauma with respect to characteristics of causes, epidemiology, mechanisms of accidents and illustrated morphological findings.

Surgical Repair of an Impalement Genital Injury from an Inline Skating Accident in a 7-Year-Old Prepubertal Girl: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: In girls who present with vaginal trauma, sexual abuse is often the primary diagnosis. The differential diagnosis must include patterns and the mechanism of injury that differentiate accidental injuries from inflicted trauma. CASE: A 7-year-old prepubertal girl presented to the emergency department with genital bleeding after a serious accidental impaling injury from inline skating. After rapid abduction of the legs and a fall onto the blade of an inline skate this child incurred an impaling genital injury consistent with an accidental mechanism. The dramatic genital injuries when

[Injury pattern on the hand after slipping onto the blade during a knife attack--a contribution to the differential diagnostic classification of sharp force injuries of the upper extremities].

Differential diagnosis of injuries caused by accidental slipping of the hand onto the blade of a knife includes self-inflicted injuries (e.g. to simulate an offense) as well as active and passive defense injuries indicative of the involvement of another party. The injury pattern on the hands of five perpetrators who suffered accidental cuts during knife attacks, as seen by the authors during the clinical forensic examination, is presented. The injuries were localized on the ulnar aspect of the thumb facing the index finger, the radial aspect of the index finger facing the thumb and variable si

Non-accidental Trauma as an Example of an Underestimated Problem in Pediatrics: Maltreated Child Syndrome and Shaken Baby Syndrome.

Injuries, including both accidental and non-accidental trauma, represent a common reason for hospitalization in the pediatric population. The impact of violence in the caregiver-child relationship is an important and often underestimated problem in pediatrics. Child abuse can present itself in various forms, including both psychological and physical manifestations. This study details the maltreated child syndrome and the shaken baby syndrome, also known as abusive head trauma. Non-accidental trauma presents with a broad spectrum of neurological symptoms, along with multiple injuries at differe

Sports injuries in elite football players: classification, prevention, and treatment strategies update.

Elite football players are particularly vulnerable to sports injuries due to the demands of high-intensity training and competition, which negatively affect their athletic careers and the economic interests of their clubs. Currently, the structural classification of injury scenarios and types in football remains unclear, hindering players' understanding of injuries and the implementation of effective preventive measures. This study aims to refine the structural classification of football-related injuries and update the corresponding scenarios, prevention strategies, and treatment approaches fo

Vulvar and genital trauma in pediatric and adolescent gynecology.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review will look critically at recent research articles that pertain to children and adolescents who present with genital injuries. RECENT FINDINGS: Many recently published articles have noted that the history as given by the child or adolescent is the most important factor in determining the etiology of genital injuries as abuse or accidental. The history is more important than any documented or lack of documented findings on physical examination. Distinguishing whether the injury was accidental or caused by abuse is of significance to the family and the injured child

Clinical Presentation and Outcome of Impalement Craniocerebral Injuries - A CASE SERIES.

Non-missile, low-velocity penetrating craniocerebral injuries are uncommon among civilians and unlike missile injuries, are associated with localized brain injury and subsequent good outcome if managed appropriately. Penetrating injuries to the brain caused by a retained, relatively blunt or sharp object that perforate the brain along its longitudinal axis producing a wound track corresponding to its length of penetration, are called impalement injuries. Most of the impalement craniocerebral injuries are accidental and varying objects have been reported. We report our experience with the manag

Five-year review (2014-2019) of paediatric accidental deaths in Cook County, Illinois (USA).

In the USA, intentional and accidental injuries are the most frequent causes of death in children. Many of these deaths could be avoided through preventive measures, and aetiological studies are needed to reduce fatalities. The leading causes of accidental death vary by age. We analysed all paediatric accidental deaths recorded by a busy urban Medical Examiner"s Office in Chicago, Illinois (USA). We searched the electronic database for accidental deaths in children aged under 10 between 1 August 2014 and 31 July 2019. 131 deaths were identified with a preponderance of males and African America

Military Injuries: Helocasting Accident.

BACKGROUND: Accidental injuries sustained during helocasting remain unexamined. METHODS: Conditions prevalent during a helocasting exercise performed at a still water body and the resulting casualties were analyzed. RESULTS: Despatch from greater-than-ideal height (>7 m) and speed (>5 knots) causes a high-velocity impact of the body with water in a non-aerodynamic configuration, exposing maximal body area at penetration. The brunt is borne by the torso/back, specifically, the lungs, ribs, and posterior aspect of the spine. The injuries result from direct trauma, sudden deceleration, barotrau
