Biological Functions of Hydrogen Sulfide in Plants.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is a gasotransmitter, can be biosynthesized and participates in various physiological and biochemical processes in plants. H2S also positively affects plants' adaptation to abiotic stresses. Here, we summarize the specific ways in which H2S is endogenously synthesized and metabolized in plants, along with the agents and methods used for H2S research, and outline the progress of research on the regulation of H2S on plant metabolism and morphogenesis, abiotic stress tolerance, and the series of different post-translational modifications (PTMs) in which H2S is involv

Physiological effects induced by antiorthostatic hypokinesia.

The main purpose of the present investigation was to reproduce some physiological reactions in the sensory system which are similar to those observed during the first day of the adaptation to weightlessness. This was achieved by a 5-day bed rest experiment during which the test subjects were kept in the antiorthostatic position at angles of 0 degrees, -4 degrees, -8 degrees, -12 degrees. Our investigations allowed simulation of the acute stage of adaptation to weightlessness and assessment of gravity-induced blood redistribution in the development of the above physiological reactions.

The Effectiveness of L-arginine in Clinical Conditions Associated with Hypoxia.

The review summarises the data of the last 50 years on the effectiveness of the amino acid L-arginine in therapeutic practice in conditions accompanied by different-origin hypoxia. The aim of this review was to analyse the literature and our research data on the role of nitric oxide in the modulation of individual physiological reactivity to hypoxia. The review considers the possibility of eliminating methodological conflicts in the case of L-arginine, which can be solved by taking into account individual physiological reactivity (or the hypoxia resistance factor). Considerable attention is pa

Differential thermal adaptation of clonal strains of a protist morphospecies originating from different climatic zones.

Eco-physiological variation and local adaptation are key issues in microbial ecology. Here, we investigated the thermal adaptation of 19 strains of the same Spumella morphospecies (Chrysophyceae, Heterokonta). In order to test for local adaptation and the existence of specific ecotypes we analysed growth rates of these strains, which originated from different climate regions. We applied temperature-adaptation as an eco-physiological marker and analysed growth rates of the different Spumella strains at temperatures between 0 degrees C and 35 degrees C. The temperatures allowing for maximal grow

Exercise testing in athletes: an adjunct to diagnose arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy?

Differentiating physiological adaptation to exercise from cardiomyopathic hearts can be challenging. Specifically, evidence of how to deal with athletes under suspicion of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) but not fulfilling diagnostic criteria is scarce and necessitates a better understanding of exercise pathophysiology and prospective trials. Upon available literature, we discuss and suggest research on combined stress echocardiography and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET echocardiography) to demonstrate mismatch between cardiac output and metabolic demand. Integrating CPET echocardi

Identification and Functional Analysis of Key microRNAs in the Early Extrauterine Environmental Adaptation of Piglets.

Neonatal mammals must rapidly adapt to significant physiological changes during the transition from the intrauterine to extrauterine environments. This adaptation, particularly in the metabolic and respiratory systems, is essential for survival. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs that regulate various physiological and pathological processes by binding to the 3' untranslated regions of mRNAs. This study aimed to identify miRNAs involved in the early extrauterine adaptation of neonatal piglets and explore their functions. We performed small RNA sequencing on six tissues (heart, liver,

Effects of morphine withdrawal on the membrane properties of medium spiny neurons in the nucleus accumbens shell.

Medium spiny neurons (MSNs) in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) undergo persistent alterations in their biological and physiological characteristics upon exposure to drugs of abuse. Previous studies demonstrated that the biochemical, morphological, and intrinsic physiological properties of MSNs are heterogeneous and provided new insights into the physiological and molecular roles of individual MSNs in addictive behaviors. However, it remains unclear whether MSNs in the NAc shell (NAcSh), an important region for mediating behavioral sensitization, are electrophysiologically heterogeneous and how suc

Regulatory Role of Adrenomedullin in Hypoxic Adaptation of Yak Subcutaneous Preadipocytes.

High-altitude hypoxic environments constrain yaks' survival capacity and metabolic adaptability. Subcutaneous adipose tissue helps yaks withstand cold and resist hypoxic stress, and ADM participates in cellular stress and metabolic regulation. To explore the regulatory role of ADM in the hypoxia adaptation of yak subcutaneous preadipocytes in high-altitude environments, we established three cell culture groups (normoxia, physiological hypoxia, and hypoxia). We further systematically examined cell proliferation, apoptosis, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production, and lipid metabolic markers, an

Adaptation of the pituitary-adrenal axis to daily repeated forced swim exposure in rats is dependent on the temperature of water.

Comparison of exposure to certain predominantly emotional stressors reveals a qualitatively similar neuroendocrine response profile as well as a reduction of physiological responses after daily repeated exposure (adaptation). However, particular physical components of the stressor may interfere with adaptation. As defective adaptation to stress can enhance the probability to develop pathologies, we studied in adult male rats (n = 10/group) swimming behavior (struggling, immobility and mild swim) and physiological responses (ACTH, corticosterone and rectal temperature) to daily repeated exposur

Calcium Signaling and Cardiac Adaptation to Stress: Focus on Pregnancy and Diabetes.

Calcium (Ca2+) signaling regulates a wide range of processes in the heart, from contractility and excitability to energy supply and cell growth. Consequently, Ca2+ signaling plays a critical role in cardiac adaptation to both physiological and pathophysiological stress. This review examines the role of Ca2+ signaling in the heart's physiological adaptation to pregnancy and its pathological maladaptation in diabetes. We focus on Ca2+-dependent mechanisms involved in hypertrophy, energy imbalance, and electrical remodeling in these two conditions, highlighting shared signaling pathways, function

The contribution of transcriptomic and proteomic analysis in elucidating stress adaptation responses of Listeria monocytogenes.

The foodborne transmission of Listeria monocytogenes requires physiological adaptation to various conditions, including the cold, osmotic, heat, acid, alkaline, and oxidative stresses, associated with food hygiene, processing, and preservation measures. We review the current knowledge on the molecular stress adaptation responses in L. monocytogenes cells as revealed through transcriptome, proteome, genetic, and physiological analysis. The adaptation of L. monocytogenes to stress exposure is achieved through global expression changes in a large number of cellular components. In addition, the cr

[Complex biomedical studies of the body under conditions of extreme marine factors].

The results of experiments with 50 volunteers are presented, exposed to conditions, similar to those of ship-wreck-on rafts and boats anchored in the sea and with restricted taking of food and water. Complex medical studies have been accomplished. The state of the cardio-vascular, nerve, respiratory and sensor systems and the metabolism of certain substances are followed up. The electrophysiological studies include: EKG, EEG, ENG, SPO, ZPO, SSEP, craniocorpography, computer analysis of the cardiac variability. A part of these have been monitored during the whole experiment using Holter records

Subclinical neonatal hypoxic stress: a hypothesis on transitional oxygen instability.

The transition from fetal to neonatal life requires rapid adjustments in respiratory, cardiovascular, and autonomic regulation as the newborn establishes independent oxygenation. Although most infants achieve stable physiological adaptation, transient fluctuations in oxygen saturation and respiratory control are frequently observed during early neonatal life and are generally considered benign once stability is restored. However, the physiological implications of such transient instability have rarely been systematically examined. This article proposes the concept of subclinical neonatal hypoxi

Variation among populations of Quercus macrocarpa in a reciprocal transplant experiment across a latitudinal gradient.

Ongoing climate change will negatively impact tree populations unless they are able to acclimate to the changes in their local environment. Effective planning for climate adaptation management requires an understanding of the current state of local adaptation and physiological performance to assess whether populations are at risk of local extinction, to determine if seed movement is appropriate, and to select appropriate seed sources if intervention is needed. We established a new reciprocal transplant experiment (Adaptation to Climate and Environment [ACE]) across a latitudinal gradient in No

Aspects of plant intelligence (ii).

Plant intelligence was earlier described as adaptively variable behavior during the lifetime of the individual plant (Trewavas 2003). This general definition for animals and plants (biological intelligence) is now justified from generic terms and emphasis on adaptive behavior. Plant intelligence can also be defined from dictionary definitions of intelligence. Artificial intelligence has been indicated as adaptive behavior. Prominent psychological opinion now indicates that human intelligence is adaptive: IQ does not measure human intelligence. The uniformity of intelligence definitions negates

Long-Term Stress Adaptation as a Highly-Conserved Key Factor in Yeast Aging.

Aging is commonly viewed as a passive consequence of accumulated damage; however, emerging evidence suggests that it may also represent an adaptive response to environmental stress. Here, we combined transcriptomic and metabolomic profiling of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to investigate how short-term, long-term, and recovery phases of stress exposure shape cellular physiology and lifespan. Short-term stress-induced protective pathways and longevity-associated metabolites, including trehalose and 5'-methylthioadenosine, consistent with enhanced stress resilience and proteostasis. In contrast, prol

Carotenoids in Stress Tolerance: Current Understanding and Future Prospects.

Carotenoids are ubiquitous isoprenoid metabolites whose biological significance extends far beyond their classical roles as antioxidants and light-harvesting pigments. Across the tree of life, these molecules exhibit remarkable structural and functional diversity, enabling organisms to fine-tune photoprotection, redox homeostasis, membrane organization, and stress-responsive signaling. In this review, we provide a conceptual synthesis of carotenoid diversity and function across organisms, with emphasis on how carotenoid composition and accumulation are dynamically regulated under environmental

Spermine: Its Emerging Role in Regulating Drought Stress Responses in Plants.

In recent years, research on spermine (Spm) has turned up a lot of new information about this essential polyamine, especially as it is able to counteract damage from abiotic stresses. Spm has been shown to protect plants from a variety of environmental insults, but whether it can prevent the adverse effects of drought has not yet been reported. Drought stress increases endogenous Spm in plants and exogenous application of Spm improves the plants' ability to tolerate drought stress. Spm's role in enhancing antioxidant defense mechanisms, glyoxalase systems, methylglyoxal (MG) detoxification, an
