Adolescents' behavioral and neural responses to e-cigarette advertising.

Although adolescents are a group heavily targeted by the e-cigarette industry, research in cue-reactivity has not previously examined adolescents' behavioral and neural responses to e-cigarette advertising. This study addressed this gap through two experiments. In Experiment One, adult traditional cigarette smokers (n = 41) and non-smokers (n = 41) answered questions about e-cigarette and neutral advertising images. The 40 e-cigarette advertising images that most increased desire to use the product were matched to 40 neutral advertising images with similar content. In Experiment Two, the 80 ad

Behavioral Executive Functions Among Adolescents With Mathematics Difficulties.

This study investigates behavioral executive functions (EFs) in the mathematics classroom context among adolescents with different mathematics performance levels. The EF problems were assessed by teachers using a behavioral rating inventory. Using cutoff scores on a standardized mathematics assessment, groups with mathematics difficulties (MD; n = 124), low mathematics performance (LA; n = 140), and average or higher scores (AC; n = 355) were identified. Results showed that the MD group had more problems with distractibility, directing attention, shifting attention, initiative, execution of ac

The Impact of Motivational Interviewing on Delinquent Behaviors in Incarcerated Adolescents.

The impact of Motivational Interviewing (MI) on risky behaviors of incarcerated adolescents and adults has been investigated with promising results. Findings suggest that MI reduces substance use, improves motivation and confidence to reduce use, and decreases risky behaviors. The current study investigated the impact of MI on general, alcohol-related, and marijuana-related delinquent behaviors in incarcerated adolescents. Participants in the study were incarcerated adolescents in a state correctional facility in the Northeast region and were assessed as part of a larger randomized clinical tr

The challenges for primary caregivers of adolescents with disruptive behavior disorders.

Adolescents with disruptive behavior disorders (DBD), including oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder, present unique challenges for their families. Although, most empirically supported treatments for DBD are family-based, the emphasis is typically on the behavior of the child rather than on the life challenges and resultant distress experienced by the family members. Fifteen families of adolescents with DBD were recruited from a large publicly funded Community Mental Health Center. For this report, data from in-depth interviews with the adolescents' primary caregivers were analyz

Developmental trajectories of childhood obesity and risk behaviors in adolescence.

Using group-based trajectory modeling, this study examined 5156 adolescents from the child sample of the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth to identify developmental trajectories of obesity from ages 6-18 and evaluate associations of such trajectories with risk behaviors and psychosocial health in adolescence. Four distinctive obesity trajectories were identified: "Chronically Obese," "Decreasing," "Increasing," and "Non-obese." Males were overrepresented in the Chronically Obese and Increasing groups; females were overrepresented in the Decreasing group. African-Americans were overrep

Outcome expectancies and gambling behavior among urban adolescents.

This project sought to identify adolescent outcome expectancies for gambling and to evaluate their relation to gambling behavior among a sample of urban adolescents. In a preliminary study, 50 outcome expectancies were identified on the basis of a literature review or generated after surveying 35 urban high school students. These expectancies were then administered to 1,076 urban high school students. Rates of at-risk and problem gambling were 14.6% and 12.7%, respectively. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed on randomly selected halves of the sample and identified 5 ex

Cognitive behavioral approaches in adolescent anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

This article starts with what is known about cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) in adults with eating disorders and with some developmental considerations about CBT in children and adolescents. It then considers how CBT might be adapted for adolescents with eating disorders and reviews the current knowledge base on CBT in adolescents. The article finishes with some thoughts on future developments in this area.

Behavior management for children and adolescents with acquired brain injury.

Behavioral problems such as disinhibition, irritability, restlessness, distractibility, and aggression are common after acquired brain injury (ABI). The persistence and severity of these problems impair the brain-injured individual's reintegration into family, school, and community life. Since the early 1980s, behavior analysis and therapy have been used to address the behavioral sequelae of ABI. These interventions are based on principles of learning and behavior that have been robustly successful when applied across a broad range of other clinical populations. Most of the research on behavio

[Psychotherapy for traumatized children and adolescents--cognitive-behavioral treatments].

According to cognitive-behavioral models, both the avoidance of trauma-associated cues, as well as cognitive distortions of the trauma and the initial symptoms thereof lead to and subsequently maintain traumatic disorders. Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy often starts with stabilizing interventions such as relaxation training. The main intervention consists of exposure to external trauma-associated cues (exposure in vivo) and to mental trauma reminders (exposure in sensu). Cognitive interventions aim to modify feelings of exaggerated guilt and shame. Of the different cognitive-behav

A multisite investigation of binge eating behaviors in children and adolescents.

The phenomenology of childhood and adolescent loss of control (LOC) eating is unknown. The authors interviewed 445 youths to assess aspects of aberrant eating. LOC was associated with eating forbidden food before the episode; eating when not hungry; eating alone; and experiencing secrecy, negative emotions, and a sense of "numbing" while eating (ps<.01). Hierarchical cluster analysis revealed a subgroup, most of whom reported LOC eating. Cluster members reported having a trigger initiate episodes, eating while watching television, and having decreased awareness regarding the amount consumed. T

An investigation of the behavioral actions of ethanol across adolescence in mice.

RATIONALE: The transition from adolescence into adulthood is characterized by rapid maturation of brain systems mediating reward and by increasing experimentation with drugs of abuse including ethanol (EtOH). Previous studies have found marked differences in sensitivity to the behavioral effects of EtOH in adolescent rats as compared to adults, but relatively few studies have been conducted in mice. OBJECTIVES: The present study examined sensitivity to various behavioral effects of EtOH in C57BL/6J mice at various stages of adolescence/adulthood (4, 6, 8 weeks old). Ages were compared for loc

Behavioral and electrophysiological evidence for opioid tolerance in adolescent rats.

Morphine and other opiates are successful treatments for pain, but their usefulness is limited by the development of tolerance. Given that recent studies have observed differential sensitivity to drugs of abuse in adolescents, the aim of this study was to assess antinociceptive tolerance to morphine in adolescent rats using both behavioral and cellular measures. Early (28-35 days postnatal) and late (50-59 days) adolescent and adult (73-75 days) male rats were injected with morphine (5 mg/kg, s.c.) or saline twice a day for two consecutive days. On Day 3, tolerance to morphine was evident in m

Classes of adolescents with disruptive behaviors in a general population sample.

BACKGROUND: To study disruptive behaviors adequately, we need to distinguish between individuals with different types of problems that may have a different etiology. The availability of a taxonomic system that helps in identifying homogeneous groups of individuals, with similar patterns of disruptive behaviors, is crucial to achieve this goal. Therefore, we examine which classes of preadolescents with symptoms of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), and Conduct Disorder (CD) can be identified in the general population. METHODS: Disruptive behav

Risk behaviors and resiliency within physically abused adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the relationship between physical abuse and several risk behaviors, and thriving behaviors, and the relationship between potential protective factors and engagement in risk and thriving behaviors among victims of physical abuse. Three categories of potential protective factors were examined: (1) individual characteristics, (2) family processes, and (3) extra-familial factors. We expected that high levels of protective factors would reduce engagement in risk behaviors (i.e., alcohol use, tobacco use, drug use, sexual activity, antisocial behavior, attempted suicid
