Delayed Development of Brain Connectivity in Adolescents With Schizophrenia and Their Unaffected Siblings.

IMPORTANCE: Abnormalities in structural brain connectivity have been observed in patients with schizophrenia. Mapping these abnormalities longitudinally and understanding their genetic risk via sibship studies will provide crucial insight into progressive developmental changes associated with schizophrenia. OBJECTIVES: To identify corticocortical connections exhibiting an altered developmental trajectory in adolescents with childhood-onset schizophrenia (COS) and to determine whether similar alterations are found in patients' unaffected siblings. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Using pros

Development of hot and cool executive function during the transition to adolescence.

This study examined the development of executive function (EF) in a typically developing sample from middle childhood to adolescence using a range of tasks varying in affective significance. A total of 102 participants between 8 and 15years of age completed the Iowa Gambling Task, the Color Word Stroop, a Delay Discounting task, and a Digit Span task. Age-related improvements were found on all tasks, but improvements on relatively cool tasks (Color Word Stroop and Backward Digit Span) occurred earlier in this age range, whereas improvements on relatively hot tasks (Iowa Gambling Task and Delay

The development of a Peer Aggression Coping Self-Efficacy Scale for adolescents.

This study presents findings regarding the reliability and validity of a newly developed measure designed to assess children's self-efficacy for coping with peer aggression. The sample consisted of 2,161 participants (1,071 females and 1,090 males, who ranged in age from 10 to 15 years; 63% White, 17% Middle-Eastern, 10% Asian, and 10% from other ethnic groups). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported the four conceptualized coping self-efficacy domains: self-efficacy for proactive behaviour, self-efficacy for avoiding aggressive behaviour, self-efficacy for avoiding self-blame,

[Immunogenetic characteristics of nuclear families of adolescents with delayed sexual development].

The paper submits data on the antigenic composition of HLA system in members of nuclear families of adolescent boys presenting with the delay in sexual maturation. Positive and negative associations of particular antigens with sexual underdevelopment are stated. Estimated in the families was the highest incidence rate of gaplotypes A 28-B 40, A 28-B 8, A 1-B 40, and A 3-B 40. The authors come out with a suggestion that it might be possible to use the identified antigens in prognostication of delayed puberty.

Exercise training, menstrual irregularities and bone development in children and adolescents.

Weight bearing physical activity plays an important role in bone development. This is particularly important in children and adolescents since bone mineral density reaches about 90% of its peak by the end of the second decade, and because about one quarter of adult bone is accumulated during the two years surrounding the peak bone growth velocity. Recent studies suggested that the exercise-induced increase in bone mineralization is maturity dependent, and that there is a "window of opportunity" and a critical period for bone response to weight bearing exercise during early puberty and premenar

A prospective study of the role of depression in the development and persistence of adolescent obesity.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent obesity is a strong predictor of adult obesity, and adult obesity has been associated with depression, especially in women. Studies have also suggested an association between depression in adolescence and higher body mass index (BMI) in adulthood. Whether depression leads to obesity or obesity causes depression is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To determine in longitudinal analyses whether depressed mood predicts the development and persistence of obesity in adolescents. METHODS: A prospective cohort study of 9374 adolescents in grades 7 through 12 who completed in-home interview

Development and current functioning in adolescents with Asperger syndrome: a comparative study.

Adolescents with Asperger syndrome (AS: without delay in speech development, diagnosed according to ICD-10 clinical criteria) were compared with a group with high-functioning autism (HFA: all with delayed speech development), and a group with conduct disorder (CD). Family and genetic studies suggest that Asperger syndrome and autism form part of the same spectrum, whereas the social impairments in conduct disorder are assumed to have different origins. The aims were to explore the relationships between early speech development and other aspects of functioning in autistic disorders, and to comp

Tetanus antibody levels among adolescent girls in developing countries.

Neonatal and maternal tetanus infections remain an important cause of death in many countries. Few studies have reported tetanus toxoid antibody levels of adolescent girls. As part of the Expanded Programme on Immunization most girls receive up to 3 injections in early childhood, and many subsequently do not receive booster vaccinations until pregnant. We determined (by ELISA) tetanus antibody seropositivity in adolescent girls from Malawi (in 1996), Nigeria (in 1993) and Pakistan (in 1996), and response to tetanus vaccination in adolescent girls from Pakistan. Geometric mean titres (GMT, IU/m

[The physical development of children and adolescents and the health protection of the upcoming generation].

The physical development of children and adolescents characterizes a process of their growth and maturation of the growing body. It is a key criterion of children's health. The dynamics in the physical development of child and adolescent populations suggests that a complex of biosocial and environmental factors influences the rate of children's growth and development. The past 10-15 years have been marked by an insignificant positive dynamics of the major morphological parameters and some sex-age groups have shown their stabilization and a significant reduction in functional parameters with co

Development of a tool to assess suicide risk factors in urban adolescents.

Dramatic increases in the adolescent suicide rate over the past three decades have underscored the need for risk-assessment tools. The tools that do exist are oriented to older populations and their application to adolescents is questionable. A project was initiated at the University of Utah's Health Education Department to develop a pilot instrument to examine the differences between adolescents who have attempted suicide and other teenagers. Eighty-two subjects between the ages of 14 and 19 participated in the test of this instrument. Twenty-five subjects were identified by a physician or ps

The PREvention Program for Adolescent Relationship and Emotional Development (PREPARED): a proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: The bi-directional link between mental health problems and intimate partner violence (IPV) is well established, yet there is a lack of prevention approaches directly targeting both during adolescence. This study conducted a mixed-methods pilot evaluation of the Prevention Program for Adolescent Relationship and Emotional Development (PREPARED), a weekly, six-session, non-specialist delivered, prevention program to promote mental health and prevent IPV. This proof-of-concept study tested implementation outcomes and measured mental health and relationship attitude and behavior change
