Autologous bone marrow transplants: different indications in Europe and North America. Advisory Committee of the International Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant Registry (ABMTR).

The International Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant Registry surveyed activity at 112 centres worldwide. Transplants increased from 265 in 1981 to over 1200 in 1987. Diseases most frequently treated by autotransplantation included non-Hodgkin lymphoma (22%), acute myelogenous leukaemia (19%), acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (15%), Hodgkin disease (15%), and neuroblastoma (5%). There were striking differences in the use of autotransplants between North America and Europe. Autotransplants for lymphomas and solid tumours comprised 94% of North American Autotransplants but only 41% of those in Europ

Aligning Priorities of Surgeons and Patients Regarding Obesity and Joint Replacement: Recommendations of the Advisory Committee Codesigning Solutions Regarding Obesity and Arthroplasty Consensus Working Group.

Elective total joint arthroplasty (TJA) in patients with a high body mass index (BMI) or obesity is a complex and nuanced topic. Patients' and surgeons' perspectives on how to address the challenges related to TJA in high BMI patients may differ, highlighting an imperative to include perspectives from both groups in strategizing approaches to improve care. Hip and knee arthroplasty surgeons and patients with high BMI and osteoarthritis were included in a consensus working group (Advisory Committee Co-dEsigning SolutionS regarding Obesity and Arthroplasty [ACCESS-OA]) to identify areas of agree

[Antibiotics in neonatology. Part I: Dosage recommendations based on the most recent evidence in newborns Advisory Committee on Neonatal Infections, Chilean Society of Infectious Diseases].

Antibiotics are the most widely used medications in neonates during their first month of life in neonatal units, mainly due to the high risk they present of acquiring serious infections such as sepsis. Most of these antibiotics are used with extrapolated doses based on the suggestions in the adult population and older children, despite the fact that the pathophysiology in newborns is absolutely different. This leads to a higher risk of more adverse effects occurring, which can lead to greater toxicity and therapeutic failures, among others. In the last decade more and more pharmacokinetic stud

Combination vaccines for childhood immunization. Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).

An increasing number of new and improved vaccines to prevent childhood diseases are being introduced. Combination vaccines represent one solution to the problem of increased numbers of injections during single clinic visits. This statement provides general guidance on the use of combination vaccines and related issues and questions. To minimize the number of injections children receive, parenteral combination vaccines should be used, if licensed and indicated for the patient's age, instead of their equivalent component vaccines. There is a lot of bacterial, viral or parasite infections who are able to be transmitted vertically from the mother to the fetus or newborn which implicates an enormous risk for it. The TORCH acronym is used universally to refer to a fetus or newborn which presents clinical features compatible with a vertically acquired infection and allows a rational diagnostic and therapeutic approach. The traditional "TORCH test" is nowadays considered not appropriate and it has been replaced for specific test for specific pathogens under well defined circumstances. The present document reviews the general

The 2014 Surgeon General's report: commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the 1964 Report of the Advisory Committee to the US Surgeon General and updating the evidence on the health consequences of cigarette smoking.

The question of whether cigarette smoking was associated with lung cancer was central to the expansion of epidemiology into the study of chronic diseases in the 1950s. The culmination of this era was the 1964 report of the Advisory Committee to the Surgeon General, a landmark document that included an objective synthesis of the evidence of the health consequences of smoking according to causal criteria. The report concluded that cigarette smoking was a cause of lung cancer in men and sufficient in scope that "remedial action" was warranted at the societal level. The 2014 Surgeon General's repo
