Anatomical, microbiological, and genetic considerations in treatment of Chinese periodontal patients.

The aim of the present narrative review was to highlight considerations when treating Chinese patients with periodontal diseases. These considerations can be broadly categorized into anatomical, microbiological, and genetic considerations. Anatomical considerations are tooth-related factors causing site-specific issues, and these include incisal palatal groove, root concavities, three-rooted permanent mandibular first molar, furcation entrance dimensions, cervical enamel projections, root trunk length, and molar root fusion. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans was found to be commensal in th

Linking microbial communities to rheumatoid arthritis: focus on gut, oral microbiome and their extracellular vesicles.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a severe, chronic autoimmune disease affecting approximately 1% of the global population. Research has demonstrated that microorganisms play a crucial role in the onset and progression of RA. This indicates that the disruption of immune homeostasis may originate from mucosal sites, such as the gut and oral cavity. In the intestines of patients in the preclinical stage of RA, an increased abundance of Prevotella species with a strong association to the disease was observed. In the oral cavity, infections by Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemc

Quercetin inhibits inflammatory bone resorption in a mouse periodontitis model.

Periodontitis is a disease that leads to bone destruction and represents the main cause of tooth loss in adults. The development of aggressive periodontitis has been associated with increased inflammatory response that is induced by the presence of a subgingival biofilm containing Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. The flavonoid quercetin (1) is widespread in vegetables and fruits and exhibits many biological properties for possible medical and clinical applications such as its anti-inflamatory and antioxidant effects. Thus, in the present study, the properties of 1 have been evaluated in

The presence of cariogenic and periodontal pathogens in the oral cavity of one-year-old infants delivered pre-term with very low birthweights: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: Recently, the dental literature has focused mainly on the microbial colonization of healthy full-term infants and their mothers or caretakers. However, oral microbial acquisition by premature infants has not been adequately investigated, and the correlation between pre-term birth and the presence of cariogenic and periodontal pathogens has not been determined. The aim of this study was to identify the presence and quantities of representative cariogenic and periodontal pathogens in the oral cavities of 12-month-old infants and compare the occurrence of these microbes between a coho

Oral and throat microbiological changes after orthodontic debonding.

As already known, orthodontic treatment presents a factor of plaque retention, promoting an increase of bacterial growth in the oral cavity. Nevertheless, after orthodontic debonding an alteration of the previous microbiological status may occur. The present study was designed to assess variations among six bacterial species in the oral cavity and the status of oral health after orthodontic debonding. At the end of the fixed orthodontic treatment, 30 patients were divided into three groups based on the type of retention: I - 10 patients were treated with upper and lower fixed retention devices

Do patients with aggressive and chronic periodontitis exhibit specific differences in the subgingival microbial composition? A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions grouped the diseases previously recognized as chronic (CP) or aggressive (AgP) periodontitis under a single category named periodontitis. The rationale for this decision was the lack of specific patterns of immune-inflammatory response or microbial profiles associated with CP or AgP. However, no previous studies have compiled the results of all studies comparing subgingival microbial data between these clinical conditions. Thus, this systematic review aimed to answer the following

Influence of periodontal treatment on subgingival and salivary microbiotas.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to characterize and compare subgingival and salivary microbiotas before and after periodontal treatment to learn if any changes of the subgingival microbiota were reflected in saliva. We tested the hypothesis that salivary levels of specific periopathogens correlate with corresponding subgingival levels before and after periodontal treatment. METHODS: Twenty-five patients with generalized chronic periodontitis completed the study. Stimulated saliva samples and subgingival plaque samples were collected at baseline and 2, 6, and 12 weeks after nonsurgic

[Localized aggressive periodontitis: a possible site-specific rather than tooth-specific disease?].

The diagnosis of localized aggressive periodontitis includes first molar attachment loss as an obligatory criterion. This tooth-specific based diagnosis has never been questioned or tested previously. We present a rare case of aggressive periodontitis that developed during orthodontic treatment, which included extraction of right lower first molar and bodily movement of the second molar to the original first molar site. At the end of the orthodontic therapy, localized periodontal disease was diagnosed at the site of the lower left first molar and the second lower right molar that was now occup

The association between periodontal disease and pancreatic cancer: epidemiology, mechanisms, and implications for clinical management.

Pancreatic cancer (PC), particularly pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), is a highly lethal malignant tumor with poor prognosis, limited early screening strategies, and high chemoresistance. Periodontal disease (PD), a prevalent chronic inflammatory disorder caused by oral microbiota dysbiosis, has been increasingly linked to systemic diseases, including cancer. This review summarizes the epidemiological evidence, potential pathogenic mechanisms, and clinical management implications of the association between PD and PC. Epidemiological studies, including meta-analyses, cohort studies, and

DNAzyme-Based Point-of-Care Diagnosis of Aggressive Periodontitis.

The rapid and accurate detection of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (AA), a key pathogen in aggressive periodontitis, remains a critical challenge in point-of-care diagnostics. Here, we report the development of a portable lateral flow device (LFD) using an RNA-cleaving DNAzyme (RCD-AA5) as a highly specific molecular recognition element. Selected via systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX) against AA crude extracellular mixture (CEM-AA), RCD-AA5 demonstrated exceptional specificity, distinguishing the target from seven other Gram-negative and Gram-positive bact

Grade C Molar-Incisor Pattern Periodontitis in Young Adults: What Have We Learned So Far?

Grade C molar-incisor pattern periodontitis (C-MIP) is a disease that affects specific teeth with an early onset and aggressive progression. It occurs in systemically healthy patients, mostly African descendants, at an early age, with familial involvement, minimal biofilm accumulation, and minor inflammation. Severe and rapidly progressive bone loss is observed around the first molars and incisors. This clinical condition has been usually diagnosed in children and young adults with permanent dentition under 30 years of age. However, this disease can also affect the primary dentition, which is

Critical issues in periodontal research.

The purpose of this paper is to highlight briefly the major achievements and the remaining critical issues in the areas of epidemiology, microbiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and therapy. Periodontitis affects a relatively small proportion of study populations in the United States and other countries. Prevalence may be decreasing, but that remains to be seen. The identity and characteristics of susceptible individuals and groups are not known, and risk indicators for severe disease are only beginning to be identified. A very large number of different microbial species has been implicated in t

Immunoglobulin G subclass response of localized juvenile periodontitis patients to Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans Y4 lipopolysaccharide.

Sera from patients with localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP) often contain markedly elevated immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody titers to serospecific determinants of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans. The objective of the present study was to define the subclass distribution of the IgG antibody response of LJP patients to this key cell envelope antigen. IgG subclass antibody responses to A. actinomycetemcomitans LPS were quantified in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with human IgG subclass-restricted monoclonal antibodies. Serum antibody concentrations

[Chemical analysis and immunochemical characterization of serotype-specific antigens from the strains of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans which were frequently found in the periodontal pockets of the patients of localized juvenile periodontitis].

Serotype-specific polysaccharide antigens of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans ATCC 29523 (serotype a), Y4 (serotype b) and NCTC 9710 (serotype c) were extracted from whole cells by autoclaving. The extracts were purified by chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex A-25 and Sephacryl S-300 columns. The purified polysaccharide antigens formed a single precipitin band with the corresponding anti-a, b or c serum on immunodiffusion. Analysis of component sugars by GLC, HPLC, GLC-MS, NMR together with specific optical rotation data showed that the serotype a antigen consisted of 6-Deoxy-D-talose, the ser
