Group influences on individuals' drinking and other drug use at clubs.

OBJECTIVE: This article examines effects of the social group on individual alcohol and drug use upon entry and exit from the club. Based on collected biological measurements of alcohol and other drug use, this study explores whether social group indicators (e.g., group characteristics) are predictive of alcohol and other drug use for individual club patrons. METHOD: A total of 368 social groups, representing 986 individuals (50.7% female), were anonymously surveyed, and biological measures of alcohol and other drug use were collected at entrance and exit to clubs on a single evening. Both ind

The association between alcohol use and hepatitis C status among injecting drug users in Glasgow.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the association between actual and self-reported hepatitis C virus (HCV) status and alcohol consumption among injecting drug users (IDUs) to determine whether IDUs who self-report as HCV infected comply with UK guidelines on safe drinking and to determine risk factors for drinking. METHODS: We conducted a repeat cross-sectional survey of IDUs accessing harm reduction services in Glasgow in 2005 and 2007. We measured self-reported weekly alcohol consumption, excess drinking (defined as exceeding the UK Royal College of Physician's guidelines for safe drinking of 14

Energy Drinks, Alcohol, Sports and Traumatic Brain Injuries among Adolescents.

IMPORTANCE: The high prevalence of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) among adolescents has brought much focus to this area in recent years. Sports injuries have been identified as a main mechanism. Although energy drinks, including those mixed with alcohol, are often used by young athletes and other adolescents they have not been examined in relation to TBI. OBJECTIVE: We report on the prevalence of adolescent TBI and its associations with energy drinks, alcohol and energy drink mixed in with alcohol consumption. DESIGN, SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: Data were derived from the Centre for Addiction

Understanding hazardous drinking: The role of anxiety sensitivity and mediating drinking motives.

OBJECTIVES: Anxiety sensitivity (AS)-the tendency to fear anxiety-related sensations-has been consistently associated with risky drinking, yet the motivational mechanisms underlying this link remain unclear. This study examined whether specific drinking motives (DMs) mediate the association between AS and hazardous drinking, and explored the moderating effects of age and gender. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional, survey-based design was used. METHODS: Data were collected through an anonymous online questionnaire completed by 372 adults (69 % women; mean age = 25.3 years), including the Alcohol

The relationship between attending alcohol serving venues nearby versus distant to one's residence and sexual risk taking in a South African township.

South Africa remains a country with one of the highest prevalence rates of HIV/AIDS at 18% among 15-49 year olds. Underdeveloped urban areas, or townships, are particularly hard hit by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Alcohol use in these townships has been established as an important risk factor for HIV transmission. Likewise, alcohol serving venues (shebeens) have been identified as sites where substance abuse and sexual risk taking occur. However, little is known about how proximity of alcohol serving establishments (shebeens) to one's residence may be related to sexual risk-taking We surveyed 3,261

Application of SBIRT Tools in Managing Alcohol and Drug Use Disorders.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the eligibility and feasibility of the "Voice Modules in Narcology" (VMIN) program. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We developed a computer program to screen for risky alcohol or drug use, utilizing an interactive voice assistant as a motivational component. Given the low detection of such risks during population health examinations and medical check-ups, this program could allow the primary healthcare sector to expand screening coverage for risky alcohol and drug use without additional medical personnel. VMIN includes an anonymous short questionnaire (CAGE) and a question about

Phosphatidylethanol is a promising tool for screening alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is one of the leading causes of preventable developmental disabilities. A lack of objective screening methods results in an under-recognition of the phenomenon. Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is a specific ethanol biomarker that reveals alcohol intake up to several weeks after alcohol use. So far, PEth has mostly been a tool for detecting moderate and heavy drinking. With lower PEth cut-offs, revealing even minor prenatal alcohol consumption is possible. We aimed to find out if a sensitive method for PEth analysis would give additional information about

Self-reported incidence of verbal and physical violence against emergency medical services (EMS) personnel in Singapore.

BACKGROUND: Western studies have highlighted alarmingly high rates of work-related violence experienced by emergency medical services (EMS) staff. As there is a paucity of Asian studies, we aimed to investigate the incidence of physical and verbal violence against the EMS crew in the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study, utilising an online survey made available to all active paramedics in the SCDF. Paramedics with at least one year of work experience were eligible to participate. All responses were kept anonymous. RESULTS: The response rate was 50.

A survey of the use of prostitutes (commercial sex workers) by new male attenders at a genito urinary medicine clinic.

This study documents the use of prostitutes (commercial sex workers) by new male patients attending a genito urinary medicine clinic. 541 consecutive male patients completed an anonymous self-administered questionnaire. 48 (8.9%) gave a history of previous purchase of sexual services in Northern Ireland and/or elsewhere; 69% of these encounters occurred outside Northern Ireland. The largest group were single men aged 20-29 years. 87% of those who purchased services in Northern Ireland were asked by the prostitute to use a condom compared with 60% elsewhere, but there was no significant differe

Substance use by fourth-year students at 13 U.S. medical schools.

Fourth-year medical students at 13 medical schools in different regions of the United States received an anonymous questionnaire designed to examine their current and prior use of 11 substances and their attitudes toward substance use among physicians. Of 1,427 questionnaires distributed, 41 percent were returned. The questionnaire and distribution method were derived from an ongoing survey on drug use in order to permit comparison of the medical students with a national sample of age- and sex-matched cohorts. The rates of substance use during the 30 days preceding receipt of the questionnaire

HIV seroprevalence, associated risk behavior, and alcohol use among male Rwanda Defense Forces military personnel.

A cross-sectional study was conducted among active-duty male soldiers, aged ≥21 years, in the Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF) and included an anonymous behavioral survey and HIV rapid testing to determine risk factors associated with HIV seroprevalence. Overall prevalence was 2.6 % (95 % CI: 1.84-3.66); personnel who were divorced, separated or widowed, served ≥6 years, never deployed, uncircumcised, reported STI symptoms, had ≥6 lifetime sex partners, or screened positive for harmful alcohol use (via Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) had higher HIV prevalence. Implementation of a Smoking Cessation Treatment Study at Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Programs: Smoking Behavior and Treatment Feasibility Across Varied Community-based Outpatient Programs.

Cigarette smoking is widely prevalent among individuals in treatment for drug or alcohol dependence; however, the treatment of nicotine addiction in this population has numerous obstacles at both programmatic and patient levels. Despite these difficulties, recent studies have demonstrated moderate success in implementing smoking cessation treatment in drug rehabilitation programs. The National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network sponsored a smoking cessation study in 13 community-based outpatient substance abuse rehabilitation programs across the country. The study evaluated the effec
